Overcoming Temptations
Finding The Source
Where do these temptations to smoke, eat cookies or skip a study period come from. They are coming from your inner mind. The negatives are sending you these temptations. Where did they come from? From past defeats, childhood experiences, learned behaviors, parents, peers, stress, anger, health problems are a few of the sources.
We do not want to just overcome the temptation and not eat those cookies. What we want is to remove the negatives thereby removing or greatly reducing the temptation in the future.
First we have to find them. The best time is when they surface in the form of temptations. I want ice cream. I can't do it. I'm too tired to workout. I will start tomorrow. Start keeping a journal. We want to find the patterns. These negatives will do whatever it can to stop you. If your goal is to lose weight look at the times when you are tempted to eat junk or overeat. If you are a salesperson look at the times when you are tempted to stall, not ask for the sale or just bummed out.

What was going on: I am behind schedule. I can't keep up. I want a snickers bar.
What I did: I ate one.
Do this for a few days to a week. Look for patterns. You may be surprised. Once we start seeing the patterns we will get an idea of what we are up against. Then ask yourself: What can I do? Spend time reflecting on what you find. Next you can see the source crumbling and floating away. Do this many times. Come up with your own way.
EXERCISE
Keep a journal for your temptations for 3 or more days. Look for the patterns. Review each journal entry. "Ask: What can I do?" Then watch the source crumbling and floating away.

Background
How the Inner Mind Thinks: The inner mind lacks critical thinking. This means it can not tell what is true or false. It can easily accept ideas and beliefs that are false. Such as "I can't lose weight" when it can be done.
The inner mind is made up up positive and negative (painful) memories, emotions, habits etc. built up over a lifetime. In a specific area if the ++++'s are stronger, they will send you strength, peace, confidence, answers, ideas, inspiration.
If the ------'s are stronger they will bring doubts, tiredness, desires, confusion "I want" anger, bad memories. Nobody wants this. What are these negatives and where did they come from? Past failures, stress, anger, work, family, health issues and childhood experiences are a few.
The Inner Mind can be our enemy or our partner. The conscious mind needs to learn how it works and how to use self hypnosis so it will be our partner. Self hypnosis is advanced willpower.
