From the President
Spring is here and winter is a fading memory...especially this past winter. With spring here, summer can't be far behind and for VAPDC that means our business year will end in June.
February brought the Winter Conference, Celebrating Forty Years of Regional Innovation, and featured speakers like Jim Cheng, Virginia's Secretary of Commerce and Trade; Bill Shelton, Director, Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development; Terrie Suit, Assistant to the Governor for Commonwealth Preparedness; Jeannemarie Davis, Director, Virginia Liaison Office; and Steve Walz, Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy. The crowd was also treated to a presentation by the Richmond Regional PDC on their Capitol Region Collaborative. If you were unable to join us in Richmond, I hope you will find the time to participate in all the great sessions that will be offered at the 2010 Summer Conference in Virginia Beach. Read more... Virginia Energy Efficiency Grant Funds Awarded
Last year, the Virginia Department of Mines Minerals and Energy (VDME) partnered with the Virginia Association of Planning District Commissions and the State's 21 Planning District Commissions to VDME with developing and implementing the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program. The program, funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009, was aimed at helping localities reduce fossil fuel emissions, stimulate the economy and lower total energy use and costs by improving energy efficiency in building, transportation and other sectors. The Governor recently awarded $13.2 million from the ARRA Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program (EECBG) to 39 energy conservation projects proposed by local governments and Planning District Commissions.

RRPDC Board Members Start April Meeting by Riding on Segways
Those attending the April meeting of the Richmond Regional Planning District Commission were greeted by members of the board riding Segways through the parking lot. The elected officials and other board members also prepared for the meeting by sitting on a GRTC bus, discussing electric motorcycles, and popping the hood of an hybrid plug-in electric automobile from Dominion Virginia Power as part of a showcase entitled "Transportation Innovation in the Richmond Region." The public event was designed to facilitate a discussion on transportation technologies currently in use or planned for the Region. The interactive displays were organized by the Sustainable Transportation Initiative of Richmond (STIR) and featured transportation options beyond the standard gasoline automobile, including a hybrid plug-in electric automobile from Dominion Virginia Power, a ZERO electric motorcycle from Velocity Motorcycles , Segways from Segway of Richmond, and a new GRTC bus. Those who attended the event had the opportunity to learn about these sustainable transportation technologies and a dozen board members cruised the parking lot while test driving Segway personal transporters. |
