April 18-20, our
Cooper 5th grade students experienced the Star Achievers Academy YMCA Wet and Wild Chesapeake Bay Science Camp at Camp Silver Beach on the Eastern Shore. This rigorous camp/program is an integrated classroom and experiential learning program in environmental science and ecology for our 5th graders at Cooper Magnet School for Technology. Our camp brought together the expertise of several local partners - Cooper elementary teachers, Virginia Living Museum education staff, Camp Silver Beach Environmental Science Center staff, NASA astronomers and a host of parent volunteers.
Centered on the natural history of the Chesapeake Bay, the Wet and Wild Chesapeake Bay project is designed to integrate academic skills in math, reading and social studies, while offering students the opportunity to be real scientists and participate in hands-on projects and experiments.

Star Achievers Academy
YMCA sponsors after school academic and enrichment clubs during each school semester. After school clubs help students explore their talents, learn new ones, and expand their personal experiences. With the help of creative educational supervision and qualified staff, Star Achievers Academy YMCA sponsors the clubs to stimulate and broaden our students' experiences so they become more successful in their academic and social development. This month we are proud to feature our 4-H Environmental Club. The 4-H Environmental Club curriculum focuses on 4-H's three primary mission mandates: science, healthy living, and citizenship. From Wind Power to Workforce Readiness, youth activity guides are filled with engaging experiences that cultivate the skills youth need for everyday living as they gain knowledge about subjects that interest them.
The club has completed numerous projects including Adopt-a-Spot trash clean ups (we have an Adopt-a-Spot with the Hampton Clean City Commission). Another ongoing project is Bird & Animal Identification Walks (to learn to identify birds and animals that live here year-round and those that migrate through or are seasonal). This is partnered with the Virginia Department of Game & Inland Fisheries. The club is responsible for implementing a school-wide recycling program. The club sponsor is Mrs. Shirley Sypolt, Fifth Grade Teacher Cooper Elementary.
