Lead science teacher Shirley Sypolt armed with two extremely qualified and gifted teachers, volunteers and community partners led a group of twenty-two fifth graders at Cooper Elementary through the Spring Intersession Wet 'n Wild project.

The Wet 'n Wild program is an integrated classroom and experiential learning program targeting natural science, environmental science and ecology centered on the natural history of the Chesapeake Bay. The project brings together the expertise of several local partners - Cooper elementary teachers, Virginia Living Museum education staff, Hampton Parks and Recreation Sandy Bottom Nature Center staff, Camp Silver Beach YMCA Environmental Science Center staff, and a NASA astronomer.

Computer challenge winnersThe students incorporated academic skills in math, reading and social studies in a five day hands-on classroom and field learning experience, participated in a four day and three night overnight camp by the Chesapeake Bay and relished the opportunity to be real scientists.

The project culminates with a student planned school-wide environmental workshop presentation where project participants  demonstrate student learning and understanding of their experience. Computer challenge winners
Men of Distinction accept the "Challenge"
 MOD
The Men of Distinction had their end of the year celebration in May and accepted the challenge to "Reach for the Summit."

Men of Distinction is a cooperative partnership between Cooper Elementary, Star Achievers' Academy YMCA and the community. The central purpose of the Men of Distinction is to help elementary age young men develop a positive sense of self.

The association's motto is "We Become What We Think We Are" and this years group of young men certainly exemplified becoming what they think they are through their behavior, academics and extracurricular participation. A few of their accomplishments include honor roll, taking on leadership roles in school and participating on award winning teams  The highlight is one of the gentlemen receiving the Principle's Award given each year by the Principal to the student who embodies what Cooper Elementary represents.

Mr. Andrew Hudson from the Star Achievers Academy YMCA challenged them to continue to reach for the summit. He shared with them a few key items they need to to keep in their. backpacks as they journey up the mountain of success. They are now armed with a backpack of desire, drive, discipline, diligence and determination.

We celebrate with the Men of Distinction for their accomplishments this year and salute them as they continue to reach for the summit.
