| Children's Engineeering "On the Move" |
The 2009 Children's Engineering Convention was held in Richmond for over two hundred participants. During the workshop presentation titled "Designed to Survive," Mrs. Harper-Neely, Cooper's technology teacher, showed teachers how to use design briefs in science lessons. Design briefs or challenges are presented to students. Students then use what they have learned in class to come up with a solution to the problem.
A design brief that Mrs. Harper-Neely shared with the convention participants was "On the Move." This challenge was used with third graders at Cooper School and asked students to design an animal that moves by using pneumatics. Pneumatics, the use of pressurized air to create motion, was created using two plastic syringes and one plastic tube. Teachers at the convention were excited about introducing pneumatics to their students. The teachers were amazed at the animals that the Cooper students created. They took many pictures to share with the teachers at their schools. Visit the link to see the presentation and resources shared at the convention. Designed 2 survivePassword - cec2009 |

Cooper is "On the Move"
At Cooper Magnet Elementary School for Technology, we believe in using technology in innovative ways to help our children make connections to their academic material. We are committed to giving children instructional input and opportunities to develop skills for lifelong learning and we know that, given the right instruction, all children can learn.
Our students have made great strides over the past several years and we are working hard to ensure their continued success. We are using hands-on projects in Children's Engineering and Design Technology in our Technology Lab to help increase scores in social studies, science and math. Our strategies are working.
Cooper will be moving from a year-round educational calendar to a traditional calendar this fall. Stay tuned to hear about the new and exciting projects and innovation that will encompass our transition. We look forward to continuing school improvement as we nurture and encourage our students towards new heights in academic growth and achievement.
