TOMORROW IS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY!

Our newly adopted charity, CARE, is very present in my mind right now, and it's probably because tomorrow, March 5th is International Women's Day.  And to bring attention to this extremely important day, CARE is hosting a special movie premiere in theaters all across the country.

A Powerful Noise takes you inside the lives of three women from different countries to witness their daily efforts to fight HIV/AIDS, champion girls' education and unite ethnically divided communities. The presentation will conclude with a live panel of renowned advocates discussing how women, equipped with proper resources, have the power to help families and entire communities escape poverty.

After the movie, will be a LIVE Q&A session that will be broadcast to all of the participating theaters (more details below!) This is a perfect event to take your girlfriends to - and just relish in the fact that you are a strong, powerful woman.  If you look back through history, we are so lucky to be alive now, in this moment - and we should celebrate it!

In
love and service,

~Rose

"This Brain-Damaging-Toxin is Probably in Your Kitchen Right Now!"
MSG Powder
I was shocked last week when I did a scavenger hunt for this brain-damaging-toxin in my kitchen and found it in 4 of my food products!
I know you've heard about MSG - most people know it isn't good for them, but they have no idea why.  MSG is short for Monosodium Glutamate, and it's a food additive.  The most widely known place it is used is in Asian dishes, but really it's everywhere.

It was introduced in the 1940s (honestly, why would we still be eating a food additive that came from that era?? Science has progressed *so* much since then) and it was added to food as a "flavor enhancer."

Since then, we realized that it does change the flavor of food, but also contains neurotoxins that affect your brain.  They can, in some cases, cause damage to your brain, but they also can cause you to actually be addicted to food!  (how convenient for the food industry!)

MSG stimulates a sensation in our brain which feels like getting a hug from the inside, which is why we keep eating these foods. But we *think* it's because of the taste. Then we get addicted to the feeling. (creepy!)

Since we have all started to get wise to MSG, the food companies thought they'd try to pull a fast one on us, and started calling it by other names.  The FDA is trying to crack down on this, but just remember to check your labels!  Just because it says "NO MSG" doesn't mean there aren't other sources of glutamate that are just as damaging!

Here are just a *few* of the names you can find on your labels that are equal to MSG:
  • MSG
  • Gelatin
  • Calcium Caseinate
  • Monosodium glutamate
  • Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP)
  • Textured Protein
  • Monopotassium glutamate
  • Hydrolyzed Plant Protein (HPP)
  • Yeast Extract
  • Glutamate
  • Autolyzed Plant Protein
  • Yeast food or nutrient
  • Glutamic Acid
  • Sodium Caseinate
  • Autolyzed Yeast
  • Vegetable Protein
  • Extract Senomyx (wheat extract labeled as artificial flavor)
The most common places to find MSG is fast food restaurants (like KFC), canned soups, frozen dinners, and seasoning salt.

Watch this video, and seriously, please check the food you are eating.  I hate to think of all of the people out there who are needlessly suffering because of those sneaky food manufacturers... not to mention our children eating this Cr*p!

 Recipe of the Week
Quinoa Salad
Quinoa Salad
This super quick salad can be served hot or cold, and is VERY versatile. Quinoa is an amazing grain use in South America that's gluten-free, is a complete protein, has lots of fiber, can help you lose weight and give you more energy!

Ingredients:

1 cup uncooked quinoa (red or regular - I like the red!)
1 1/2 cups water

You can find quinoa online or at any health food store. My favorite is Red Inca brand - but you can use whatever you want.

Doesn't sound too exciting yet, does it?  Well, it isn't.  But the good news is that the best thing about Quinoa is that you can put any number of add-ins into it to "doctor it up"!  Here are a few suggestions to use in any combination:

Optional Add-ins (pick 2-3 to use at a time):

¼ cup Goji Berries
3-4 Basel leaves (diced)
¼ cup Walnuts
¼ Cup Pecans
¼ Cup Pine Nuts
¼ Cup Red Onions (diced)
¼ Cup White Onions (diced)
¼ Cup Red Currants
½ Cup Cherry Tomatoes (cut in half)
1 Clove Garlic (finely diced)
1 Cup Chicken Sausage (sliced)
½ Cup Chopped Green Apple
