SUCCESS STORY

by Shawn Cosby

In the fall of 2008 I was at a stagnant place in my life. I was coming out of a relationship and I had let my weight balloon up to 320 pounds. All my life I have been a large person and had comforted myself with the thought that I come from "a large family."

One day my niece and I were walking my dog when he broke free from his leash. We chased him, but I was only able to run 20 feet before I was sweating and out of breath. This was that day I realized I had to do something. A friend suggested I join the YMCA. I didn't even know we had one in Mathews.

My first day there I ran on the treadmill for 20 minutes and thought I was going to pass out! Little by little I increased my time and speed, added weight lifting to my regimen and after a while I noticed some changes. I was helping my niece with her homework and she remarked, "Uncle Shawn you have arms like the Hulk!" Though my arms aren't quite that large, I have noticed the physical change.

Through all my hard work, I now know the most important change is that I got in shape mentally. I FEEL better not just look better. Thanks to the staff I am now down to 248 pounds! It takes time and it didn't happen overnight, but it was worth it! Thanks to the YMCA!
