| Aeras and TuBerculosis Vaccine Initiative Strengthen Collaborative Efforts
New MOU aims to unify global efforts to develop new TB vaccines for the world |
Aeras and the TuBerculosis Vaccine Initiative (TBVI), a pan-European TB vaccine research foundation based in the Netherlands, signed a new memorandum of understanding this past week to tackle the major technical and scientific challenges that have plagued vaccine development since the introduction of the BCG vaccine more than 85 years ago. Over the past several years, increased investment in vaccine research and development has resulted in a robust pipeline of new generation TB vaccines. Enhanced collaboration between the two major TB vaccine development organizations will accelerate the development of this pipeline, creating efficiencies that will significantly increase the likelihood of having new vaccines available for use within the coming decade.

TB Vaccine Field Launches Strategic Blueprint
Blueprint details comprehensive strategy for developing and introducing effective TB vaccines |
| TB vaccine development has made advances that would have been unimaginable a decade ago. In recognition of World TB Day 2012, the journal Tuberculosis published a special issue - co-edited by Dr. Michael J. Brennan, Senior Advisor for Scientific and Global Affairs at Aeras, and Dr. Jelle Thole, Director of the TuBerculosis Vaccine Initiative - containing a new TB Vaccine Blueprint, editorials and opinion pieces. The Blueprint outlines five keys to progress: creativity in research and discovery; correlates of immunity and biomarkers for TB vaccines; clinical trials: harmonization & cooperation; rational selection of TB vaccine candidates; and the critical need for advocacy, community acceptance and funding. Opinion pieces were provided by preeminent researchers from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Health Organization, and other key research institutions.
