Novel TB Vaccine Targeting Latency Enters Clinical Development
Aeras Sponsors Phase I Trial of SSI H56-IC31 in South Africa |

A novel TB vaccine targeting latent TB entered clinical testing in a Phase I trial in South Africa, with the first patient vaccinated on November 23. The candidate - SSI H56-IC31 - was developed by a consortium led by Peter Andersen at the Statens Serum Institut and is undergoing Phase I testing sponsored by Aeras and led by the South African Tuberculosis Vaccine Initiative (SATVI) in the Western Cape Province, where the rate of latent TB infection is 50 percent overall. This is the first time a novel TB vaccine has initiated clinical development in South Africa, signaling the country's prominence in TB vaccine research.

Aeras is pleased to welcome to its Board of Directors three new members whose joint experience spans global development and commercialization of vaccines, as well as financial and operational management in the biopharmaceutical field. At its meeting in November, the Board elected new members Wayne Pisano, the former President and Chief Executive Officer of Sanofi Pasteur; Gerd Zettlmeissl, the former Chief Executive Officer of Intercell AG; and Lota Zoth, a finance and business executive who previously served as Chief Financial Officer of MedImmune, Inc. Aeras is honored to have these accomplished individuals join the Board.

Aeras Appoints Gerard F. Fleury as Chief Financial Officer

Aeras welcomed Gerard F. Fleury as Chief Financial Officer on November 14. He joins Aeras with extensive financial management experience in the fields of technology and biotechnology. Mr. Fleury last served as Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer at VIRxSYS Corporation, a private biotechnology company with clinical and pre-clinical disease programs.

Aeras Participates in 42nd Union World Conference on Lung Health

Aeras participated in the 42nd Union World Conference on Lung Health in Lille, France in October. The Union Conference marks the largest annual conference focusing on lung health issues in low- and middle-income countries. To garner support for the TB vaccine cause and inform conference-goers of progress, Aeras co-organized a symposium on partnerships to accelerate TB vaccine development, provided a speaker for the National Press Foundation's Journalist 2 Journalist Project, co-hosted an exhibit booth with the TuBerculosis Vaccine Initiative (TBVI), and co-hosted a reception for TB vaccine stakeholders at the Institut Pasteur de Lille. TB vaccine research and development was also featured in a symposium organized by the Stop TB Partnership Working Groups on New TB Vaccines, New TB Diagnostics, and New TB Drugs.
