Each year in the United States, approximately 500,000 lives are saved by organ and tissue donation.

| Minority Donor Awareness Day |
|
August 1st is National Minority Donor Awareness Day, a campaign to increase awareness of the critical need for organ and tissue donation among minority communities, to recognize minority donors and their families, and to encourage healthy living and disease prevention.
Because some diseases which are best treated by transplantation are found more frequently in minority populations, minorities represent more than half of the people on the national transplant waiting list.

Greetings!
It's been an exciting year so far and we are moving on a very fast track, so climb aboard and fasten your seat belts! With the development of a very successful charity bike ride last quarter, the American Transplant Foundation is growing by leaps and bounds. As we roll into the second half of this year the Foundation kicks into high gear with the initiation of a major national educational campaign that will drive serious conversation toward developing real solutions to the nation's organ shortage. |

The Foundation to join national book tour to promote organ and tissue donation
The American Transplant Foundation is pleased to announce the release of board members Steve Farber and Harlan Abrahams' new book, On the List, which goes on-sale August 18th. Inspired by Steve Farber's transplant experience, this compelling tale examines the ethical, legal, political, and economic debates over organ transplant policies as two very different families navigate the transplant maze. The authors will embark on a national book tour and media campaign later this fall. The Foundation will join the national book tour in major cities around the country including L.A., Chicago, New York City, and Washington, D.C. to promote organ and tissue donation by dispelling myths, explaining how one can save lives through both living and deceased donation, and promoting the donor registry to help accomplish the nationwide drive to register 100 million donors. We are excited to collaborate with our partners across the country as part of this educational campaign. The book tour and campaign will begin with a mid-September launch in Denver, Colorado.

Team Transplant cycled over 9,300 miles to raise awareness about organ and tissue donation
On Sunday, June 7th, 182 members of Team Transplant, our inaugural charity cycling team, cycled the 2009 Subaru Elephant Rock Ride in Castle Rock, Colorado to raise awareness about organ and tissue donation. Team Transplant was the largest team at Elephant Rock, collectively cycling over 9,300 miles and raising more than $35,000 to support organ and tissue donation! Thirteen transplant recipients and six living organ donors participated on the team to prove that it's possible to lead a healthy, active lifestyle even after receiving or giving the gift of life.

| Chris and Stephanie's Story |
|
Chris will donate a kidney to his wife Stephanie later this fall
"For most of her life, Stephanie had few medical problems, and when she was diagnosed with kidney failure, she hardly let that slow her down. A full-time special education teacher, Stephanie woke up each morning, worked, then ended the day with four hours of dialysis. When Stephanie learned she was in need of a kidney transplant, Chris insisted that he be tested for compatibility. He was a match. 'She's a beautiful woman. She's caring. She has a beautiful heart. She's exceptional,' Chris says. 'Hopefully, we can live a more normal life (after the transplant).'..."
