April 2009
Greetings!

April is National Donate Life Month, a month-long national campaign to celebrate the tremendous generosity of those who have saved lives by becoming organ, tissue, marrow, and blood donors and to encourage more Americans to follow their heroic example. The American Transplant Foundation is participating in several projects to register more organ donors and to increase awareness about the people who are still waiting for the Gift of Life. Read on to learn about what you are helping to achieve.

Donate Life, Colorado!
The Foundation and its partners launch the new Donate Life Colorado Registry

Donate Life ColoradoThe American Transplant Foundation was proud to be a part of the unveiling of Donate Life Colorado at the Colorado State Capitol on April 16th as part of National Donate Life Month. This re-launch of the Colorado Donor Registry adopts the successful national Donate Life brand and moves us another step closer to inspiring all people to take action and register their intent to Donate Life! In 2008, Colorado ranked second in the nation for the number of people who register as donors at the DMV. But through this exciting new initiative, our goal is to become number one.

The Foundation was also instrumental in the unanimous passage of Senate Joint Resolution 09-038 which recognizes organ and tissue donors through the observation of Donate Life Colorado Month.

The legislation will be heard in the House Committee on Transportation and Energy on April 21st. A Life Saved: Krysta's Story
Because of organ donation, Krysta got to run.

Read Krysta's story"The doctors told us that Krysta would not live without a double lung transplant. We knew that the lack of donors meant that Krysta might not survive the wait, but the hope that had carried us in the years before continued. After years of surgeries, treatments, medications, and being on oxygen, we knew Krysta's fight was not over. Not yet."

Thank you for your continuing support as we strive to save lives by eliminating our country's shortage of transplant organs. Happy National Donate Life Month!

Sincerely,

 Heidi Heltzel
