Volunteer Appreciation Week

Volunteer Appreciation Week 2010

Thank You Volunteers!!!

During National Volunteer Week, we especially want to recognize you and express our appreciation for all of your dedication and service. Whether you are a Big, a Bowler, a Board Member, a Donor, or a Friend of Big Brothers Big Sisters, we could not exist without your commitment to the agency. You are making a difference in the lives of children in our community.

I want to have a chance to personally thank you for all your support so I hope you can join us on June 8 for a casual evening reception. Watch for more details coming soon.

Thanks again,

Join Our 5th Annual Spread The Magic Campaign

With nearly 130 children on the wait list, we need more caring volunteers. As you talk with friends, family and colleagues about your experiences as a Big, or as a voluteer, you can encourage new volunteers for our programs. In many ways, you are our best advocates --- our Ambassadors of the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. In your role as Ambassador, we hope you will join our 5th annual Spread the Magic campaign.

As a participant of the campaign, you are eligible to win incentive prizes for each volunteer you recommend who completes the volunteer training process. The Ambassador who recruits the most volunteers will win a GRAND prize of a gift certificate worth $250!

To join the Spread the Magic campaign, call Judi Saint Sing at (336) 724-7993 or click here to sign up on our Web site.

Spend a A Minute with a Big

Whitney and Jazzmin outside of Reynolda House
Whitney and Jazzmin
Whitney Rooks has volunteered as a Big since March of 2009 and is matched with Little Jazzmin. Whitney is a senior at Winston-Salem State University and plans to join the military upon graduation. Her goal is to have a career in military intelligence.

BBBS:
Why do you think you and Jazzmin get along so well?

WR:
Jazzmin and I have the same outgoing type personalities and we enjoy the same things. We sing songs together riding in the car, enjoy going to cultural events, church and the movies. We recently went out to eat to celebrate how well she did on end of grade testing.

BBBS:
What is the most rewarding part of being a Big?

WR:
When I see her do things that I've talked with her about, like doing her hair a certain way or when she calls for advice about boys, and then she follows what I've told her, that's extremely rewarding. And, her Mom is so grateful that she has seen a change. Jazzmin's grades and attitude have improved since we've been matched. That's meaningful to me.

BBBS:
Why did you choose to volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters?

WR: I have a biological big sister and know how much I look up to her and listen to her, so I wanted to be a positive role model for someone else.

Do you want to be a positive role model? Contact us today about volunteering.

Teen Moms Learn About Literacy and Budgets
Left to right: Little Veronica and her Big Fontaine Kirk-Graham, holding Zamonte; Little Brianna and her Big Kim Hughes holding Zynia, participate in the literacy program at the library.
Teen Moms 3-27-10
Thanks to funding from the Winston-Salem Women's Fund and the Winston-Salem Foundation, we sponsored two Teen Mom activities during March and April. On March 27,  two teens and their Bigs attended a discussion at the Central Library about early literacy and the importance of reading to babies as early and often as possible.

The speaker, Virginia Bolden, encouraged the moms to read daily to their baby to encourage word sounds, language skills, and to help mom bond with her child.

Big Pat Casey helps her Little Jade complete a budget.
Teen Mom Activity in April
On April 17, Pamela Odom, Financial Educator, presented at the Big Brothers Big Sisters office and provided the teens and their Bigs with valuable information on financial planning and budgeting for a family.

We need more caring Bigs for the teen moms of Forsyth County. If you, or someone you know, would be interested in volunteering with a teen mom, please contact Rachel Taylor at (336) 724-7993.

Empowered Youth Program Inspires Wait List Students

Winston-Salem Urban League Young Professionals and wait list students engaged in discussion.
EYP session
Since February, Big Brothers Big Sisters has participated with the Winston-Salem Urban League Young Professsionals in their Empowered Youth Program. Through this collaboration, a group of teen students on our wait list have participated every other Saturday in leadership seminars to learn more about becoming successful, productive and influential young professionals. The group was also treated to a night at the theatre attending "To Be Young, Gifted and Black," at the Stained Glass Playhouse.

Big Brothers Big Sisters appreciates this opportunity provided by the W-S Urban League Young Professionals. We believe the students have benefitted tremendously from these educational sessions.

Bowl for Kids' Sake: Donations Keep Rolling In

The news keeps getting better as we continue receiving donations and matching grants for this year's Bowl for Kids' Sake. Currently, we have raised $195,000 which is $20,000 more than our goal! Big Brothers Big Sisters would like to extend a big THANK YOU to all the sponsors, bowlers, and contributors who supported our 29th annual Bowl for Kids' Sake.

These funds allow us to continue providing programs and services for the children and volunteers in the program, and help us safely grow our program to match volunteers with the more than 130 children currently on our wait list.
