Tip of the Month: Correct Image Resolution Saves Disk Space
How are you going to use the image you're scanning? With the proliferation of scanners, network attached copier/scanner devices, and multi-function printer/scanners, remember to configure your scan resolutions to match how you want to use the electronic image. Scanned image file sizes can be very (very) large. Bigger is not necessarily better.
Consider that a display device (monitor, projector, etc.) is typically at 75 dpi. If you are scanning to archive an article or letter at 600dpi and 24 bit color depth, the file size will be very large. If this document is to be displayed on a monitor at only 75dpi, you've just wasted a lot of disk space. Here's a real example: I printed an email and scanned the one page at 600dpi at 24 bit color. The resultant file size was 1786KB. The scan took about 50 seconds. I scanned the same one page at 150dpi at 24 bit color. The file size was 193K! Nearly one-tenth the size! The scan time was about 20 seconds. The images look nearly identical on the monitor. A fax is 150 to 200 dpi. Print quality is 300dpi. If the documents you scan are for archiving, then scan at 75 dpi. If you want a fax-quality printout, try 150 dpi. Generally speaking, document scanning at resolutions over 200 dpi just wastes disk space. |

Product Focus: An Ideal Multi-Function Device for Smaller Offices
Every once in a while a product just hits the spot. The Brother MFC-9840CDW multi-function device is one of them. I've been waiting for a device that is color laser, network ready (wired and wireless), has an automatic document feeder for scanning or copying, duplexes automatically from 2-sided originals, prints duplex, does N-up copying and printing, faxes, and is less than $1,000. This is it. This device is great for smaller offices, home offices, or small workgroups at a rated 21 pages per minute. I use one in my home office and I recommend it to you. The device is available through CRU for $874. |
