The New "Ribbon"
The new "ribbon" replaces the menuing scheme that we've all been used to for many years. Initially, the ribbon can be frustrating because it makes you think differently. After you get used to it, you'll find that it takes fewer clicks to do the same thing. In the meantime, try these two "helps" to find your way:
· In the Office application, click on the "?" in the upper right hand corner of the window. Type a one- or two-word command and look for the 2007 method in the help listings.
· Microsoft offers online assistance that lets you rest the pointer on a Word 2003 menu location and it will demonstrate where to find the same location in Word 2007. Click "refresh" if page doesn't open right away. Go to Microsoft Demo |

Maintaining Compatibility Between Old and New File Formats
Office 2007 brings a new file format for all its applications. You have a couple of choices for dealing with a new file format while maintaining compatibility. The first approach is for the Office 2007 user to use the new formats immediately. The difficulty is choosing what to do for Office 2000/2002/2003 users who need to read the documents.
Microsoft created the free compatibility pack for the users of the older version. You can download the Office 2007 Compatibility Pack here.
Another choice is to save the document in an old format from within Office 2007. When you save a document, "Office Button"->Save As-> then select the option for the "97-2003" document format. The downside to this method is that any of the 2007 features in the document are stripped out.
The ultimate way to share documents that do not need to be edited is the PDF. Office 2007 has a built-in PDF writer. To create a PDF in office, "Office Button"->Save As->PDF or XPS. This creates a PDF of the document that you can attach to an email.

Outlook Cleanup
How large is your Outlook file? Click on Tools->Mailbox Cleanup. Then click on "View Mailbox Size". This tells you how large your message store really is. Especially if you've just converted to Office 2007 or plan to convert soon, this is a good time to do a little housekeeping.
When you "Delete" email, Outlook moves the message to the "Deleted Items" folder. It does not delete the message. You must empty the deleted items folder to purge the trash. Right-click on "Deleted Items" and select "Empty Deleted Items Folder".
Remember to browse your junk mail folder periodically. Often, systems misclassify good mail as junk mail. This is particularly true for automated response emails or newsletters. When you find a message marked as junk that is not, drag it into your inbox. After reviewing your junk mail, right-click on the "Junk E-mail" folder and select "Empty Junk E-mail Folder". This permanently deletes the messages. |
