News from DannyApril 2010
Our family decided to take a ten-day, 3,000-mile road trip for spring break this year. (Yes, we survived!) It was the first time in a very long time that we actually slowed down and it definitely helped me see the "big picture" again. As an insurance guy, I can tell you how important it is to look at the big picture and think long term when it comes to insurance. Don't make the mistake of waiting to buy insurance or thinking you won't ever need it. The reality is, most people will.

TALKING ABOUT...

The New Health Care Reform Law -- What Does it Mean For You?
stethescopeThe new health care reform law is controversial, but advocates say it has made strides in some crucial areas. Here are some of the most important immediate changes:

1) The plan will provide access to those with pre-existing conditions by creating new "pools of risk."
2) It will close the doughnut hole for prescription drugs for those covered by Medicare. 3) Children may remain on parents' health plans to age 26 versus age 25. 4) Small businesses will not be eligible for greater tax incentives, including credits for providing health insurance to employees.

Ultimately, there will be a high-risk pool for employees to enable them to access a small nursing home insurance benefit, but that is still a far cry from a comprehensive long-term care program.
Generally speaking, the goal is to provide more people with access to more benefits.

It remains to be seen how we can truly pay for this program. I'm interested to hear your thoughts on this legislation. Send them to me at danny@menshinsurance.com. Thanks!
What were we just talking about? If your brain is feeling a little fuzzy, wellness expert Dr. Ann Kulze says you should try changing what you eat. One excellent choice: red grapes. Scroll down for more information.

What are your favorite businesses in Winston-Salem? Well, said "Why not come up with one great big list." And so we have. Actually, the idea came from working with a lots of newcomers to Winston-Salem. Many of these these folks wanted to hear about our favorite spots.   about what's great about Winston-Salem. So we've created a quick list of places, restaurants and professionals that we love (and feel great about recommending). Note from Danny:
I hope you'll make plans to join me for a great round of golf on Friday, May 7 as part of the Blanton Vogler Memorial Golf Tournament. I am so honored and excited about serving as the Chair for this event. As a member of the JDRF Board this year, I have learned so much about the need for more research to stop juvenile diabetes. I really want to have a great turnout to support this incredible organization -- and I need your help. We're looking for 200 male and/or female golfers to participate in this event and we know it will be a fun day. All money raised will go to support ongoing Type 1 juvenile diabetesDiabetes research in Blanton Vogler's memory. If you're interested in playing, just shoot me an e-mail at danny@menshinsurance.com and we'll get you signed up.

FOR BUSINESS OWNERS
For Business Owners and CEOs
insurance folderIf you own a business, we can help you evaluate the benefits you offer your employees.  For example:
  • Do you offer long-term disability insurance? Many employees are now looking to employers to provide this.
  • When was the last time you shopped for insurance competitiveness?
  • Could a different plan save your company money and increase benefits for your employees?
  • Have you made sure that employees have access to securing supplemental disability insurance to offset the taxable loss from an employer-paid group LTD plan?
The savings from a review may help you fund a new tax-deductible, long-term care insurance program for executives without having to provide the plan to all employees.  Finally, don't forget that all business owners must protect themselves by having key man life insurance and business overhead expense insurance.

If you'd like to schedule a review, simply give Danny a call at 336-631-5503 or e-mail danny@menshinsurance.com.
STAYING HEALTHY
"Let's Move" -- The First Lady's Plan to Fight Childhood Obesity
Let's Move is a national campaign with the goal of erasing childhood obesity in a single generation.
let's move
First Lady Michelle Obama recently introduced a new, nationwide program called "Let's Move" aimed at fighting obesity in children. She has been quoted as saying that she herself had to make changes in her family's lifestyle after her children's pediatrician noted that her children were carrying excess weight. Let's Move is coming at an appropriate moment.  Obesity is at epidemic levels in the United States. In fact, studies show that the U.S. is spending nearly $150 billion a year treating obesity-related illnesses.

Let's Move has three goals: 1) encourage kids to get 60 minutes of exercise daily; 2) eat healthy, fresh food; and 3) make healthy, fresh food available in every part of the country. Check out the website for more information.

Interested in boosting your brainpower? Want to be in a better mood?  Are you concerned about Alzheimer's?

Wellness expert Dr. Ann Kulze
tells us that what we eat can really have an impact on the health of our brains. To boost your brainpower, she advises:

Enjoy:
  • Regular consumption of foods rich in omega-3 fats -- oily fish, oysters, omega-3 eggs, walnuts, whole soy foods, wheat germ, flax seeds
  • Extra virgin olive oil as your oil of choice
  • Generous use of herbs and spices -- ginger, garlic, turmeric, curry, parsley
  • Lots of beans -- daily is best
  • Three servings daily of 100% whole grain foods -- physically intact whole grains such as oats, brown rice and barley are best
  • As many fruits and veggies as possible
  • A prudent portion of high-quality dark chocolate (1/2 to 1 ounce) daily
  • Some healthy protein at every meal -- fish, shellfish, low-fat/skim dairy products, poultry, nuts/seeds, beans, wild game, omega-3 eggs, whole soy foods
  • Lots of freshly brewed tea (white, green, black or oolong)
  • A small handful of nuts daily -- walnuts, almonds, pistachios and Brazil nuts are especially good
Restrict or Avoid:
  • The "Great White Hazards" -- white flour products, white potatoes, white rice, sugar/sweets
  • Trans fats -- strictly avoid processed or fast foods made with partially hydrogenated oils (check labels), stick margarine and shortening
  • Limit saturated fats -- red meat, whole dairy products, butter and palm oil
  • Sugary/sweet beverages -- soda, fruit drinks, sport drinks, etc.
  • Excess alcohol -- limit to 1 drink or less daily
Dr. Ann sells a laminated shopping list of these foods to take with you to the grocery store. Click here to order.
