 SEPTEMBER/2010
Greetings!

We have been blessed with beautiful weather, family celebrations and productive construction days. First, we want to thank everyone who participating in our home dedication Saturday, Sept. 18 on Dahlia Street for making it so special (including the families, friends, speakers, Girl Scout Troop 335 and pastors). And congratulations to our newest home buyers: Singleton, Dawson, Weems, and Swanson families. See photos from their dedication ceremony.

Every year we are blessed with a wonderful new AmeriCorps crew, and this year is no exception. Please join us in welcoming our awesome new AmeriCorps volunteers: Laurel Morgan (volunteer services assistant) and Noah Yoder, John Peyer and Brendan Murphy (construction assistants). Join us on the construction site to see why we love them so.

And what a better time to join us than during Women Build? Bring a team of friends and colleagues, or take a day for yourself to help build an affordable home with the Carson and Searight families. Progress is going great, and can only get better if you volunteer too.

We're excited to have broken ground on 2011 build sites in a new neighborhood development being built in Covington -- The Groves at Mile Branch. Read more below and see photos from the groundbreaking ceremony.

October is a wonderful time of year in St. Tammany, and we hope you will join us in this fall weather to help build a stronger community of families empowered with the pride of earning and buying their first homes with Habitat.

PROGRESS! If you've only been to the construction site once (or haven't been out there yet!), view our Women Build photo gallery of our progress from since the wall-raising on Sept. 17. The walls are up and the roof is being raised on the Carson family's home. The Searight family's home has a coat of paint and some electrical work installed.

Please join us as a volunteer with Women Build 2010, building Tuesdays-Saturdays, 9am-3pm. You can even create your own Women Build fundraising page to help cover our construction expenses.

Women Build 2010 is chaired by C.J. Ladner. W.A.T.C.H. 2010 is chaired by Maura Donahue. Women Accepting the Challenge of Housing are planning coffees with friends through October.

Please help us thank our generous sponsors for making this project possible: Lakeview Regional Hospital, Building Buddies, Christwood, Cory, Tucker & Larrow, Inc., Covington Rotary, Donahue Favret, First Bank and Trust, Florida Marine Transporters, LaPorte, Sehrt, Romig & Hand, Inc., Pool Corp, St. Tammany Homestead and Whitney Bank.

Digging for the Groves

  Groves Groundbreaking ceremony
Habitat STW located a 15-acre plot of land and then reached out to Volunteers of America (VOA) to be our partner, as VOA is a nationally known affordable housing developer. The development, The Groves at Mile Branch Creek, is located in an area of North Covington known as the West 30s (named by the numbered streets' names). The Groves will consist of owner-occupied single-family and rental multi-family housing units for low- to moderate income families, as well as market rate single- and multi-family housing units.
