Salon Khouri Snippets DECEMBER 2011 / JANUARY 2012 |
Hello!
We've had a lot going on at the salon in the last two months (more on that below), but wanted to take the time in our intro to reflect on what is important this time of year.
There have been one too many videos of Black Friday madness floating around. You may have seen them -- frenzied masses making a mad dash for the $2 waffle iron, a sea of impatient shoppers pressed against an H&M retail door awaiting it's opening, pushing and shoving to get the best deal. It made us think. What is really important in life? Are we worth to others only to the amount of gifts we bestow upon them at Christmas and Chanukah? That left us with an idea. Instead of stressing about what gift to give someone who probably doesn't even need it -- you know, that crazy aunt that has a house filled with nicknacks -- purchase a gift for someone in need in honor of that person. It helps the person in need, it will make you feel better, and it will hopefully inspire the person you are honoring to do the same. Wouldn't it be great to hear a news story about the massive increase in donations to organizations like Toys for Tots, local food kitchens, and the Salvation Army -- all because you created a chain reaction of inspiration? And, it seems that inspiring acts are extremely contagious this time of year ;-)
We do understand why the retailers do what they do. As a business, particularly a small one, it is hard not to commercialize on the season. Hair salons, just like retail, do a majority of their business between October and December. Trying to walk the line between subtle promotion and over-the-top promotion is difficult to say the least. We hope to get it right and promise that we won't be open until the wee hours on Christmas Eve with doorbuster promotions! We do have a few promotions for everyone that will hopefully help you save a little money so that you can take us up on our idea mentioned above :-). For those of you new to Salon Khouri, we are a small business who tries to give back. Our hope is to help others, but to also inspire, as we have been inspired by the selfless acts of so many others. This holiday season, we are going to once again adopt a local family in need. If you would like to participate this year, please email Jennifer. We may need new toys or gift cards for the family, but can email you once we have all the details worked out. And, don't forget, with every edition of Salon Khouri Snippets, we will post a "pop quiz" on the newsletter. Simply go to our Pop Quiz page and answer the question, and you will be entered in a drawing to win a FREE HAIRCUT at Salon Khouri!
With that, our wish for our staff and clients is that you have a relaxed, family and friend-filled holiday season. Remember what's really important this time of the year -- giving and receiving the love of those who mean the most to us, and giving to those who are less fortunate. May your Christmas, Chanukah and New Year be filled with health and happiness!

Community
Updates on our 5th Annual Cut-A-Thon to "cut out" Neuroblastoma, our 4th Annual Pink Hair for Hope, and our 5th Annual Food Drive
Thank you to everyone who participated in the 5th Annual Cut-a-Thon to "cut out" neuroblastoma to honor Ashburn cancer warrior, Taylor Love. We raised $1800 in just four hours and all proceeds were sent to the Band of Parents Foundation to fund neuroblastoma research. This brings our five year total to $7300!
4th Annual Pink Hair For Hope
Our 4th Annual Pink Hair for Hope event raised $780 this year. Proceeds for this event fund breast cancer research through The American Cancer Society. Our four year total for this event is now at $2620!
5th Annual Food Drive
On Wednesday, November 23rd, stylist Heidi Wheeler fought through pre-Thanksgiving day traffic to deliver a huge box of food to Fairfax-based Food for Others. Thank you to everyone who brought in canned and dry goods this year!
Adopt a local family for Christmas
We will be "adopting" a local family in need again this year for Christmas. Please email Jennifer if you are able to participate. |

Staff Updates @ Salon Khouri
Stylist Heather Zak welcomed a baby girl AND a baby boy into the world on November 22nd. Mom and babies are doing well. Heather is currently on maternity leave and we will update you when she returns.
Please welcome a new shampoo technician, Stephanie Falcon. Her scalp massages are out of this world!
And another recent addition to the staff is Erin Toman as salon apprentice. Erin will be training with us at the salon in our grueling apprenticeship program.

Education Updates
Orie received her Liscio Thermal Reconditioning Certification this fall. If you are tired of coarse, unruly hair, pre-book your appointment with Orie in January and receive $100 off the treatment! Also, did you know that you don't have to walk away with pin straight hair (unless that's what you want). There are various finishes available: hair straightening, smooth control, and straight variations.
