Completion of Grant Funding

Implementation of the CCPS in LA county was funded in part by a grant (#06-0117-04) from the Chancellor's Office, California Community Colleges for $95,000. This grant covered the 2008 & 2009 FCCC annual licensing fees for all RN schools in LA County who used CCPS.

A grant from the UniHealth Foundation  supported the annual licensing fees for hospitals in 2008 and the cost of regional project support and  coordination in 2009.

With start up grants now ended,  the cost of sustaining CCPS is now paid by participating sites through an annual fee.  Services were restructured resulting in a 50% cost reduction going forward to support sustainability.  Letters were sent to each participating school and hospital in January to inform them of the fee structure and invoice plan for 2010.

Completion of Spring & Summer 2010 Placements using CCPS
  • CCPS was utilized during the recently completed placement planning cycle by 28 RN Schools, 6 LVN Schools, and 30 Clinical Facilities, with a user group of over 120 nursing education leaders and placement coordinators from schools and hospitals involved in placement planning decisions.
  • 194 Clinical Courses were processed for the spring/summer 2010 period for 649 Cohort Groups (each with 10-12 students), and scheduled across a total of 1493 patient care locations or units.
  • Hospitals posted over 350 preceptor assignments available for schools to request. The preceptor scheduling option remains underutilized with some schools and clinical facilities continuing to arrange preceptor placements individually.

Moving Forward - Processing Requests for Fall 2010 Placements  (September - December 2010)

  • Classes were held for 18 new placement coordinators from schools and hospitals  throughout February. Thank you to National University for hosting these classes in one of their computer classrooms !!!
  • The regional placement planning calendar for Sept-December 2010 placements is posted on the CCPS home page.  Please note these key dates:
  • February 22-March 5: Hospitals update unit availability
  • March 8-26: Schools submit placement requests
  • March 29-April 9: Hospitals make placement decisions

A special CCPS refresher class is available for experienced placement coordinators on March 18th from 9 AM to 12 Noon at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena.  Current coordinators who would like further coaching or a review of key CCPS features should consider attending.

The class agenda will be based on the needs and interest of those attending, so is not intended to be a step by step class for new users. This was a recommendation of the LANRC Advisory Board to best meet unique user needs. Schools interested in assistance with submitting actual requests may benefit from this session as it is scheduled during the school placement request period.  Hospitals interested in assistance to review placement requests, read reports, or plan data entry for placement decisions will also find this a "just in time" help session.

Pre registration is required.  Please contact carolyn@cinhc.org to sign up and to indicate what content you want covered in the session.
Please join me in welcoming......................

Suzette Cardin, RN, DNSc, FAAN, Assistant Dean of Student Affairs from UCLA has been appointed as the academic co-chair of the LANRC Advisory Board, replacing Wendy Taylor, RN, MSN, PhD,  from CSU Northridge. Thank you to Wendy for your leadership and commitment to establish the LANRC and implement the CCPS these past 2 years.

Welcome to New Sites and Coordinators !

The benefits of utilizing CCPS to support nursing growth and the value of identifying available capacity as a region increases as more hospitals and schools utilize this approach. The addition of LVN schools last year makes it possible to now view schedules from all nursing schools and hospitals and identify options for clinical placement and monitor capacity challenges across communities.

18 new CCPS coordinators have just completed training and will be using CCPS for the first time in March.  Please join me in welcoming them and if you are affiliated with their school or hospital, please support and assist them in using the on line tool for the first time.

There is opportunity to improve regional planning by encouraging more hospitals and clinical facilities to adopt CCPS to have more schedules processed within the CCPS for every site. Covering the cost of CCPS is shared among participating schools and clinical facilities, so the cost per site will go down with more sites adopting it. Your support to engage new sites to use CCPS will result in lower user fees.

Who is using CCPS now?
Three new schools began using CCPS this month: American Career College, Concorde Career College, and North West College.  Please join me in welcoming them!

Please visit www.LANRC.org and click on the CCPS link for a complete list of all participating schools and clinical facilities. CCPS Coordinators are reminded to check the current list of sites and placement coordinator contact information as you get ready to process placements for fall 2010.

Please Contact carolyn@cinhc.org for additional information on CCPS or to register your school or clinical facility to begin using CCPS.
Call to Placement Coordinators to Share Your "Best Practices" using CCPS.....................

Please consider sharing your clinical placement practices and great ideas with other placement coordinators.  You are a highly committed and creative group who have been challenged to manage the complexities of scheduling, and have discovered options and strategies that work for you - which may also benefit others.

A recent example: National University was a new BSN program that opened their new campus in LA last year.  Faced with the challenge of securing new clinical affiliation agreements, and obtaining clinical placements for the first time in our region, the school utilized CCPS reports to learn where current existing school placements were.  They then reviewed the units, shifts, and days of the week where hospitals stated they had availability.  They set up their clinical schedules and submitted placement requests targeted only to the available "open" times. The new faculty were asked to remain flexible to successfully coordinate the placements needed.  This strategy utilized the options hospitals had open and supported growth without impacting existing school schedules.  Great Job!!!

Let us know what you do and how CCPS helps you do it se we can acknowlege and share your ideas with others in future issues of ReSource.
