Welcome to the ArtLinks Monthly e-Newsletter A regular Art News and Information Bulletin from the participating ArtLinks Partner Counties: Co Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford & Wicklow
Hi Everyone,
ArtLinks has been busy recently undertaking a second series of its Mentoring Advice Sessions for painters/printmakers. From the comments received the sessions have been highly regarded from all those who participated. Comments revealed the level of advice from our two mentors were both practical and encouraging for artists attempting to maintain and develop careers in these challenging times. ArtLinks on behalf of these artists would like to again thank Eamonn Carter, artist and Director of Gorey School of Art and painter, John Noel Smith, for so enthusiastically sharing their advice, professional knowledge and assisting in helping create such a highly regarded programme.
ArtLinks this month is also pleased to announce five brand new Film Busaries, in association with our partner organisation, One Bursary is available for each of the 5 ArtLinks counties to assist people to attend Filmbase's highly professional development courses. Open to all ArtLinks members, simply fill out the one page application form on the Bursary page of ArtLinks.ie. Please feel free to forward this email to people working in film. The closing date is 21 August 09. The ArtLinks Film Bursary programme has been co-ordinated by the Wicklow Arts Office and recipients of the award will be announced at annual Wicklow Wicked Film Fes tival Awards, 7.30pm, Sat 29 August, Greystones Theatre. And there is more! We are also offering a filmbase training course designed specifically for ArtLinks members, 'Producing a Short Film' on 28 & 29 Aug. Please contact the Wicklow Arts Office, (0404) 20155. Places are limited.
There has been a lot of discussion recently about the Arts in the current economic climate. I came across an excellent article in the Practice.ie newsletter - a network and support organisation that we partnered with last year and one that I recommend to those in the arts who work with young people and children. The article Urgent: Making the Public Case for Arts mentions the newly available and important report from the VAI, The Social, Economic and Fiscal Status of Visual Artists (available at this link or from the VAI). You can see links to Mary Cloake, Director of the Arts Council speeches on youtube, on the important role of the Arts for Ireland that she presented at the recent annual Theatre Forum Ireland meeting in Wexford. During that meeting the idea was also raised of creating a database of Arts Workers for every electoral constituency in the country, online at Facebook. This has
really taken off with over 1,500 people now registered from across Ireland. However its success depends on having a
comprehensive list of people working professionally in the arts i.e. those make
their living from it - in whatever form (theatre, opera, dance, venues,
festivals, film including cinema staff, visual arts, writers of all kinds etc) and those supported by Arts Funding. If you have not registered yet, details on the 4 constituencies covered
by ArtLinks are as follows:
Carlow/ Kilkenny - Set up by Philip Hardy, Barnstorm Theatre
Company (28 signed up so far) Waterford - Set up by Jenny Clooney in Red
Kettle (200) Wexford - Set up by Chrisin Bar, Bui Bolg
(35) Wicklow - Set up by Melanie Clark Pullen, Actor
(21) (look how the artists in Waterford have been quick to support this)
NB
Please join the group where you live (and invite your Art Worker facebook friends) and are registered to vote
(this might be different to where you work). If you are not on Facebook and
wish to join your constituency then email theatreforum@ireland.com and give your name,
email and constituency. Tania Banotti of Theatre Forum Ireland says 'that in the short to medium term the idea is to use
this strength of numbers to make the case for arts funding to local Councillors
and TDs'.
Another initiative that was launched this month was the new PublicArt.ie website resource, supported by the Arts Council. PublicArt.ie covers a wide range of activities across art forms - do have a look! And did you hear that U2 has made an incredible gift of €5 million to our Arts Partner organisation, Music Network. It will enable Music Network to offer new music and vocal training opportunities to Ireland's children. Can you imagine the return from such a gift in years to come. Ireland's place in the world, from tourism to inward investment has often rested on the valuable, creative abilities and skills of its people; all of us will need to highlight our work to ensure that such investment in the Arts continues. And don't forget to keep your ArtLinks Profile Page current and upload all your art activities to the website.
Lets keep creating!
