Aradia I Greetings!

Welcome to the next awesome issue of our newsletter. It's been a huge month with our classes doubling in size (which is terrific) and getting geared up for the Canberra Multicultural Festival which is on next Saturday 9th Feb. We've got some amazing talent lined up so we hope you can come down and bring the friends and fam down for a great show. I think it's also important that the bellydance community gets together and supports one another more often so I'm aiming to organise a few more bits and pieces throughout the year.

I've just come back from the Rachel Brice workshops in Melbourne which were (of course) fantastic. There was also a live performance by Rachel with her man (Pentaphobe) which was so cute it was edible. I'm liaising with Rachel to bring her out here either later this year or early next year so if you are interested, I'll be running intensive workshops with Rachel in Sydney, Canberra and Brisbane (numbers depending on all). But you will need to get in quick as Melbourne seems to sell out within days. One of my highlights was having Rachel herself ask me how I did a particular move I do (when she saw me performing).. I could have passed out.. but fortunately.. kept my creative coolness. heehehe.

Speaking of workshops, I've been jetsetting around to look at venues to run my industrial workshops due to popular demand and I'm all ready to book. So expect an update within the next couple of weeks for workshops in your state.

Finally I have got a YouTube presence! yay! I have uploaded 3 dance videos to YouTube and these are also on the website www.spellboundbellydance.com.au  also. Very exciting stuff. I will be uploading videos of some of the Dangerous Curves troupe performances and solo's over the next month so stay tuned!

I also got my 5 mins of fame from So You Think You Can Dance with a great pic in TV Week (28 Jan) on page 36. Have a great February everyone and enjoy your Valentine's day on the 14th Feb.  :)

Warm shimmies,

DVD Review:
Tribal Fusions Tribal Fusions

Purely a performance DVD consisting of Rachel Brice, Zoe, Mardi Love and Sharon Kihara.

I enjoy watching these amazing women embracing their artforms which they themselves have created however I do find that it's a little bit samey but still well worth a watch.

I don't particularly find the Urban Tribal piece inspiring - considering the beautiful work this troupe does. I also found Dusty to be just hideous.. almost in the same basket as Dondi for me. hehehe.

Seriously, a nice dvd to watch. Amazing dancers and costumes with innovative music. Worth the $. Click the DVD above to be taken to Amazon (they have 30% off at the mo!).

BELLY DANCE MOVE OF THE MONTH

Belly rolls / undulations & FluttersRachel Brice undulation

Undulation
1. Lift the chest (squeeze the shoulder blades together and down)
2. Squeeze the diaphram (upper abs)
3. Pull in the lower abs
4. Release the pelvis

This is a super basic 4 step undulation which eventually you can smooth out. I will go into advanced detail in future issues.

Reverse undulation
1. Pull in the lower abs which will pull up the pelvis
2. Squeeze the diaphram (upper abs)
3. Lift the chest
4. Release the chest and pelvis

The flutter
The flutter is done by rapidly contracting and releasing the diaphram.  It may help you get the feel for it if you pant or try a deep belly laugh. Try taking half a deep breath and panting the air back out.

When you've mastered these.. try layering the flutter on top of the undulation.

Fifi Abdou
Egypt's most celebrated belly dancer

Fifi has a beautiful face that belies her age. Her eyes are very sparkly and the dark, liquid brown of autumn leaves beneath water. She has strong features, with only a touch of crow's feet when she laughs. She sashays round the stage, acknowledging and smiling at everyone with enthusiasm for her dance. She gives attention to each table at the stage side, doing those wonderful, sexy breaks that come right down, so slowly and with such feeling that it almost breaks your heart.

There are the wonderfully powerful shimmies, the travelling hip dumps that are so exquisite you want to bottle them, and some breathtaking turns and spins.

Fifi AbdouFifi 6

Anybody who has ever seen Fifi work the stick, will know how awesome she is with this simple prop. She wields it like a man, and you can actually hear the air displacement as she spins it.

Fifi's shimmies are unique in that they seem to travel all the way through her abdomen, way up to her breasts and beyond. Indeed, her whole face shakes with the effort. Fifi is often criticised for her "limited" repertoire of movements.

What one has to bear in mind is that some of the most beautiful poetry is only four lines long. She takes the time to converse with her audience, and speaks a little English.

Fifi abdou, now in her fifties, is one of the greatest Egyptian dancers of our times. Her sassy style, which flaunts convention and has often landed her in trouble with the muslim authorities, is unique to her.

Four times married fifi was still dancing at 5 star hotels in cairo, and has been in her own play, honey and cream.

Fifi was set to retire in 2001 with plans to release a series of videos of her work over the years.

Fifi Is one of the wealthiest women in Cairo. Egypt's mufti Nasr Farid Wassel stated that muslims should avoid eating food offered by belly dancers as the money they earned was haram, or forbidden.

Fifi retorted, "my money is halal because I earn it thanks to my hard work." She added that 30 families depend on her handouts to survive.

Abdou is well known for helping the poor and destitute of Cairo.

Fifi's cheekiness has inspired many a dancer and there is oodles of information regarding her beautiful career as a bellydancer including plenty of video's on YouTube.

Well I hope you've enjoyed a quick break from your day with a bit of Bellydance goss. If you have any suggestions, comments or just all round love to share, drop me an email.  :)  Aradia
