Monmouth U. helps to open thrift shop.

WEST LONG BRANCH - Monmouth University students have taken on the task to help a nonprofit organization open a thrift shop in Neptune.

The students and members of Redeem Her are involved in all aspects of the project, including creating a business plan, decorating, floor plans, sorting through donations, installing walls, public relations, marketing and staffing.

Redeem Her is a nonprofit inmate- and ex-offender-directed, self-help service organization. The organization exists to bridge the gap between incarcerated women and their communities and to prove that people really can be redeemed.

The organization has three goals: to change the perceptions that society has about women in prison, to provide positive role models to women who are still incarcerated, and to meet the tangible, practical needs of incarcerated and recently released women.

Some 40 students of Monmouth University in West Long Branch, ranging in age from-23, are involved in the project.

Is this the first time you've heard about the new store?

That's definitely our fault ... we have been remiss in keeping you up to date with all the goings-on at Redeem-Her.  Er, we've been busy!  There's a lot going on.  So, look for more updates to come.  The photographs above are (starting at the top), the Coming Soon sign, a front view of the store, the "vanilla box" insides before the buildout, the students at the lease signing, and the construction begins.

Here are things we need:
  • We are currently looking for community volunteers to work alongside Monmouth University students and the women of Redeem-Her at the new Second Chances store in Neptune, NJ.  Store hours will be from 10am to 8pm Monday through Saturday, and 11am to 5pm on Sunday.  Our anticipated soft opening is October 20th.  Call 732-776-7006 now to sign up for a weekly 3 hour shift.  Your commitment to our cause will be exuberantly celebrated!
  • Student groups, church groups, women groups, etc., are needed for one-time commitments at our "warehouse" in Point Pleasant Beach, NJ.
  • Do you have a truck you could donate for use at Redeem-Her's new store?  When you donate your car or truck to Redeem-Her, you get the full Kelly Blue Book value for your deduction (most charities "flip" your car for the money, which means you only get what they get for it, which most of the time is far less).  Plus, you'll know that we are using your vehicle, everyday, to help women.
Thank you for spreading the word.
