A Message From The Director

May is Older Americans Month and the LGBT Aging Project has been celebrating!

We kicked off May with the spectacularly successful international premiere of Gen Silent. Thanks to the many of you who attended the two sold out film screenings and the joyous Red Carpet Reception. Both individuals and organizations have shared overwhelming enthusiasm for the film and it is thrilling that there is such a compelling film to increase the visibility and awareness of LGBT older adults and caregivers. We are sure that awareness will continue to grow as the film to screens around the country.

Also, The LGBT Aging Project is very pleased to announce that due to the generosity of many of you we exceeded our goal and will receive our matching grant from the Roberta Thall Charitable Trust!! We are grateful to the Trust for offering us this matching grant and to the individual donors who met that offer.

Your personal enthusiasm and financial support are tremendous affirmations of both the mission and the work of the LGBT Aging Project. Together we continue to create opportunities for LGBT older adults and caregivers to age with dignity and respect.

Be well,

LEK Sig v2

Community Initiatives For LGBT Older Adults & Caregivers

We are so pleased to report on the progress of a number of the mainstream eldercare agencies who have completed our Open Door Task Force Training Program.  These agencies are now focused on building relationships and offering services and programs to the LGBT seniors and caregivers in their communities.  Specific details about each of their programs can be found in our 'upcoming events' section below.

Somerville Cambridge Elder Services had formed a partnership with The Cambridge Council on Aging and Cadbury Commons to launch the first LGBT meal site in the Somerville Cambridge area.

North Shore Elder Services has created the Old and Bold coalition comprised of community members dedicated to issues of LGBT Aging on the North Shore. They are also launching a supper series with great guest speakers that kicks off this month.

South Shore Elder Services has had an incredible success with their monthly Brunch for LGBT Seniors & Friends in Braintree. They have also been building a strong network of community organizations and churches interested in working with LGBT seniors on the South Shore.

WLEN, Worcester LGBT Elder Network has regular social gatherings and events for LGBT Seniors and caregivers.  WLEN is also working on an LGBT Aging Conference scheduled for September 2010. WLEN was founded by Elder Services of Worcester Area, Central Mass Agency on Aging and the Worcester Senior Center.

Congratulations to these agencies, you are having a tremendous impact on the lives of LGBT seniors and caregivers in your communities.

LGBT Aging Project at the National LGBT Aging Roundtable

Lisa Krinsky and other leaders in LGBT aging attended the fourth annual meeting of the National LGBT Aging Roundtable in Washington DC. The Roundtable focused its two day meeting on sustaining the growing movement of LGBT Aging and advancing both federal and local policy on behalf of LGBT older adults and caregivers.  The Roundtable also conducted the first Congressional Briefing on LGBT Aging.

The LGBT Aging Project is a founding member of the Roundtable whose mission is "to move forward work that improves the overall quality of life for LGBT seniors, reduces discrimination against LGBT older adults, and provides an opportunity for people who engage in this work to share best practices and raise issues of concern."

Caring and Aging with Pride needs your help with a ground-breaking project.

Click here for the survey and your chance to win the $500 gift certificate.
