| A Message From The Director:
November is National Family Caregiver Month and the LGBT Aging Project wants to recognize the tremendous efforts of those assisting friends, relatives and loved ones. Many of us have been, or will be caregivers - whether it's transportation to medical appointments, filling prescriptions, providing meals, helping someone walk safely, or advocating for them when they cannot do so themselves.
Caregivers are busy balancing the multiple responsibilities of caring for a loved one with the demands of work, home and care for themselves. It can be overwhelming.
The LGBT Aging Project continues to offer the only LGBT caregiver support group in Massachusetts. This group meets the first Monday of each month from 6-7:30pm in Jamaica Plain. If you want to join with others who understand what you are going through and can offer support and encouragement then contact the group facilitator Joanne Peskowitz, LICSW (617) 271-4182.
Just remember: the best way to care for your loved one is to care for yourself.
Be Well, Lisa Krinsky

HHS to Create a National Resource Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Elders
Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced plans to establish the nation's first national resource center to assist communities across the country in their efforts to provide services and supports for older lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) individuals.
The LGBT Aging Project is partnering with several other national leaders in LGBT Aging on a proposal for this grant. We are very excited that the Administration on Aging is dedicating resources to LGBT elders/caregivers. We'll keep you updated with more details as we have them.

"Hannah Free" Success!
The LGBT Aging Project in partnership with Ripe Fruit Films brought the film "Hannah Free" starring Sharon Gless to Massachusetts for the film's New England Premiere. We held seven screenings of this wildly popular film, five of the screenings were sold out. Between the various screenings nearly 900 people had an opportunity to see this important film. We were pleased to have Bella Books as our sponsor for the Provincetown Screenings during Women's Week. We also want to thank Fenway Health for sponsoring the Boston Premiere. We were thrilled to have Hannah Free's Executive Producer Tracy Baim (pictured) join us for the Fenway screening.
Hannah Free opens in New York City Dec 11th to 17th.
>> For more info on Hannah Free and future screenings go to their website or contact Tracy Baim if you would like to bring this film to your area. |

| In Memoriam
This month the LGBT Aging Project lost two very special people Carol Riso and Alexandre Rheaume. Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends, families and caregivers of Carol and Alexandre.
Carol Riso was a hero to so many people. She was a retired Major Air Force nurse who served during the Vietnam War. Carol had a huge impact on the LGBT community when she organized Older Lesbian Energy (OLE) and created a network for older lesbians throughout Massachusetts. Carol was committed to having a visible presence of older lesbians every year during Pride. Many will remember her proudly riding with OLE women during the Pride Parade. Carol will be greatly missed.
Alexandre Rehume was the long-time partner of Lawrence Johnson. They were together for 38 years. Those who have seen the trailer for the film "Gen Silent" will remember Lawrence and Alexandre's story, which is well documented in the film. Alexandre also served our country as a Medic in the Marines during WWII. Our thoughts and prayers are now with Lawrence, who has worked tirelessly as Alexandre's caregiver for so many years.

Obama Administration to Ensure Inclusion of the LGBT Community in HUD Programs from HUD Press Release by Brian Sulivan
U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan today announced a series of proposals to ensure that HUD's core housing programs are open to all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. "The evidence is clear that some are denied the opportunity to make housing choices in our nation based on who they are and that must end," said Donovan. "President Obama and I are determined that a qualified individual and family will not be denied housing choice based on sexual orientation or gender identity."

Fenway Health Launches The Massachusetts LGBT Aging Needs Assessment (MLANA) Coalition from Making Life Healthier, Fenway Institute's Quarterly Newsletter
The Massachusetts LGBT Aging Needs Assessment (MLANA) Coalition aims to address the invisibility of older LGBTs by working collaboratively on community-based participation in research projects that assess the health, service, care and support needs of LGBT people in Massachusetts over the age of fifty. Fenway Health and the Center for Population Research in LGBT Health has joined with the LGBT Aging Project, Stonewall Communities, the New England Association on HIV over Fifty, and several interested individuals to form MLANA and work to better understand the unique challenges and strengths of this overlooked population. >> Read the full article |

Important LGBT Survey from The National Senior Citizens Law Center:
Please consider participating in a survey of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.
The National Senior Citizens Law Center, Lambda Legal, the National Center for Lesbian Rights, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, the National Center for Transgender Equality, and Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE), are working together to raise awareness of the issues facing older adults who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender ("LGBT") and live in nursing homes, assisted living facilities and other long-term care facilities. We hope to identify areas where policy changes will improve care, and to find other older adults, advocates and providers interested in these issues. The survey is only 16 questions. It should take no more than ten minutes to fill it out. The survey completely protects your confidentiality. (However, we are looking for volunteers willing to be interviewed, so please consider checking that box!) Click here to fill out the survey: |
