Kristina also attended the "Out to Brunch" gathering earlier in the month and fell in love with all the women there. She's very eager to meet more people at Cafe Emmanuel. LGBT Aging Project Director Attends LGBT Aging Leadership Retreat at Rainbow Vision Santa Fe
Lisa Krinsky, Director of the LGBT Aging Project, attended a strategic planning retreat for the Leadership Council of the American Society on Aging's LGBT constituent group known as LAIN (LGBT Aging Issues Network). Ten Leadership Council members from across the country attended this retreat, hosted at Rainbow Vision Santa Fe and spent the weekend reviewing their mission and goals which currently focuses on raising awareness of LGBT aging/caregiving issues within the mainstream field of aging and fostering professional development and research in the field as well. The Leadership Council members also participated in a panel discussion entitled "Current Trends and Issues of LGBT Aging" attended by over 60 members of both the Rainbow Vision and Santa Fe LGBT community and topped off the evening attending a fabulous drag show in Rainbow Vision's Silver Starlight Lounge!
About Rainbow Vision:
RainbowVision Santa Fe, now 3+ years old, is the groundbreaking vision of 4 partners who asked the question: "What will happen to me as I age? Who will take care of me?" The only community of its kind in the world, RainbowVision Santa Fe offers 146 residences spread over 13+ acres with gorgeous mountain views. The residences range from condominiums, to independent leased residences to an assisted living community offering up to 6 levels of care. Within the El Centro clubhouse are the Billie Jean King Fitness Center and Spa, the E. Scissorhands Image Salon, The award winning SilverStarlight Lounge and Cabaret and Garbo's fine dining. RainbowVision has become the de facto LGBT and allies clubhouse of Santa Fe offering an enormous range of activities from massage to functional fitness to dance parties to bar-b-q's and holiday feasts, to community events benefiting some well known local non-profits. Mayor's Boat Cruise for LGBT Seniors
With the sun shining, a warm temperature, and a cool water breeze, we couldn't have asked for a more perfect day for Mayor Menino's First Boat Cruise for Boston's LGBT Seniors and Caregivers. The Senior Pride Coalition, which consists of The Boston Prime Timers, The LGBT Aging Project, OLE (Older Lesbian Energy), NEAHOF (New England Association HIV Over Fifty), and Stonewall Communities, worked with Boston's Commission on Affairs for the Elderly to spread the invitations for this special event. Held on Thursday September 24th, about 70 seniors, many of whom are regulars of Ethos' Café Emmanuel and Out to Brunch, shook the hand of Mayor Menino as they boarded the Provincetown Ferry for a couple of hours of lunch, entertainment, and good company. Equipped with his fedora hat and 1940's style suit, impressive twenty-something singer Zack Miller kept the spirit light and fun, bringing back classic songs from Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin. "There was a bit of nostalgia for me. It reminded me of when I was young, going out on a cruise much like this one and sneaking a dance with a guy," Café Emmanuel regular Sam Goldfarb reflected about the day. Along with the music and nostalgia came great conversation and a nice setting to mingle. After stepping off, some were already reflecting on how pleasant the day was, while others didn't quite want to leave, ready to hop on the next boat. Maybe we could do this again sometime. |
Changing of the Guard at "Out to Brunch"

The High Price of Being a Gay Couple By Tara Siegel Bernard and Ron Lieber, The New York Times
Much of the debate over legalizing gay marriage has focused on God and Scripture, the Constitution and equal protection. But we see the world through the prism of money. And for years, we've heard from gay couples about all the extra health, legal and other costs they bear. So we set out to determine what they were and to come up with a round number - a couple's lifetime cost of being gay.
