Legal Guide for LGBT Seniors
The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) has released a new manual on legal issues important to LGBT people over the age of 55. The publication, called Planning with a Purpose: Legal Basics for LGBT Elders, includes information about a range of issues that may be of concern to LGBT seniors, such as relationship recognition, finances, healthcare, long-term care, inheritance, elder abuse, and discrimination. Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE) collaborated with NCLR's Elder Law Project to develop the guide.

LGBT Aging, Health and Wellness Forum
Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Hebrew SeniorLife, Fenway Health, Stonewall Communities and the LGBT Aging Project are sponsoring a program titled "LGBT Aging, Health and Wellness" on September 21, 2009 from 5:00 - 8:00 pm. This forum will address key health issues facing LGBT people as they age and is specifically focused on health care providers. By exposing providers to the most important aging, health and wellness issues of the LGBT community, we can better integrate health and community-based services for LGBT seniors. Keynote speaker Jennie Chin Hansen, President of AARP will open the program discussing LGBT aging, diversity and health care reform, followed by a panel discussion addressing medical health and aging, an LGBT consumer's perspective, gender and identity expression and housing and social service options for the LGBT community. Continuing education contact hours will be provided for nurses, social workers and physicians. The LGBT Aging, Health and Wellness Forum will be held on September 21, 2009 from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM at Fenway Health, 1340 Boylston Street, Boston, MA. Limited seating. Parking available on a first come first served basis.
To register, please RSVP online atwww.fenwayhealth.org/LGBTaging or call Alice Cohen at 617-927-6170.

Gay and Gray In Worcester
We are very pleased to share with you the exciting work that is happening in the Central Mass / Worcester area. Each of the local mainstream elder service agencies, (Central Massachusetts Agency on Aging, Elder Services of Worcester Area Inc. and The Worcester Senior Center) participated in the Aging Project's Open Door Task Force, an LGBT Cultural Competency Program for mainstream elder service agencies. After completion of the program the three groups decided to join together for a consolidated outreach effort to connect with the LGBT elders and caregivers in their area. The agencies applied for and received a grant from the Greater Worcester Community Foundation for outreach and community building for the LGBT Senior community in Central Mass. The newly formed alliance, known as The Worcester LGBT Elder Network (WLEN), has already conducted a number of community meetings to bring together LGBT seniors, caregivers, allies and providers. Since the spring the group has grown to roughly 30 members and they have had three meetings and one social event. The group is now planning events for Worcester Pride which occurs on September 12. Congratulations WLEN!
If you would like to become involved with WLEN or to learn more about the organizations involved, contact Kathy McGrath, LGBT Resource Specialist, at kmcgrath@eswa.org or call her at (508) 756-1545 x338. |
LGBT Bereavement Groups begin again this Fall.
The LGBT Aging Project, in partnership with Ethos and The Massachusetts Department of Public Health will once again be offering a number of free LGBT Bereavement Groups starting up again this fall.
If you would like information about the group closest to your area, please contact Bob Linscott at (617) 522-1292.
If you have a friend who has lost a partner/spouse, family member or friend, please pass on this information. These six week groups offer a safe and welcoming environment for people to process their loss and move forward with their life. The groups are open to people of all ages. |
In Memoriam
The LGBT Aging Project recently lost two very dear friends Roy Brown and Jim Anthony. Roy was a long time member of The Boston Prime Timers and an active member of The Senior Pride Coalition.
Many will remember Jim Anthony (pictured on the right below) from the coverage he and his partner Bruce Steiner received in the October 2007 article in the New York Times: Aging and Gay and Facing Prejudice in Twilight (October 7, 2007 by Jane Gross).
Both men will be missed

New Publication on Transgender Aging: Unique Challenges of Transgender Aging: Implications from the Literature. By Diane I. Persson, School of Nursing, Center on Aging, University of Texas, Houston
Transgender elders are both underserved and understudied. Neither the etiology nor prevalence of transgender is well understood...A discussion of the terminology of transgender is presented, and the issues facing aging transgender individuals are identified.
Facing Discrimination Issues for LGBT Seniors in Long Term Care Settings
by Kathleen Lourde, Provider
All Rev. Robert Franke wanted to do was live in an assisted living facility (ALF) close to his daughter, Sara Franke Bowling, and his grandchildren in Little Rock, Ark. Franke is a 75-year-old retired biology and religion professor, university dean, and Unitarian-Universalist minister who happens to be gay. Happily, he found an ALF not too far away, in North Little Rock. He applied for admission and supplied the ALF with all the necessary paperwork, including medical forms filled out by a local physician, and moved in. The next day, he was evicted.
