November 2008

 Greetings!

Greetings and happy fall!  November means elections (in case you haven't noticed!) and we want to draw your attention to Ballot Question #1 in Massachusetts. You will find some important information on that initiative in this newsletter.

November is also National Caregivers Month so we would like to encourage any LGBT caregivers to consider trying our free LGBT Caregiver Support Group (see below for details).

I would also like to congratulate the LGBT Committee at South Shore Elder Services who recently hosted a panel presentation "Gay and Gray in the South Shore" for a staff training. A number of our speakers from the LGBT Aging Project shared their stories and answered questions. The speakers and South Shore's LGBT Committee are pictured above. Congratulations on a very successful event!

Enjoy the fall and don't forget to get out and VOTE on Tuesday!

This ballot initiative on the state income tax could severely impact the programs that many elder service agencies and LGBT organizations like The LGBT Aging Project offer.

Should voters decide to eliminate the state income tax:

  • Up to 45% of State Revenue would be lost
  • Over 15,000 elders could lose home care services
  • Police, fire, emergency services would likely be cut
  • Teaching positions will almost certainly be eliminated
  • Property and sales taxes may have to increase dramatically
  • You'll pay more for fewer services

Are you caring for a loved one?

If you are providing care for a loved one, regardless if it is someone local or if you are providing care through traveling and phone calls you should know that there is a group just for you. The LGBT Aging Project in partnership with the Caregiver Alliance of Suffolk County offers a FREE monthly support group for LGBT Caregivers.

The group offers you an opportunity to join other lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender people who are also providing care for a loved one. The group gives participants to share personal stories and resources but most of all it provides you with some time away to nurture yourself.

November is National Caregiver Month: Isn't this a perfect opportunity to give this free group a try.

Next Meeting: Monday November 3, 6:00pm to 7:30 in Jamaica Plain. For more information call Joanne Peskowitz, LICSW, (617) 271-4182.

NEW YORK (AP) - Frank Carter was once a globe-trotting professional dancer; his world is smaller now. He battles multiple health problems, walks with a cane and rarely leaves his compact Manhattan apartment.

About The LGBT Aging Project

The mission of the LGBT Aging Project is to ensure that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender elders have equal access to the life-prolonging benefits, protections, services, and institutions that their heterosexual neighbors take for granted.
