October 2008

 Greetings!

We have more exciting news to share in this edition. First, we would like to offer our congratulations to a very successful LGBT Senior Outreach effort in Worcester. The elder service organizations in Worcester organized a table for Worcester Pride (pictured). This brought a great deal of visibility around LGBT Seniors to another Pride festival as well as strong statement of welcome inclusion by the participating organizations. Congratulations to Elder Services of Worcester Area & The Massachusetts Family Caregiver Support Program, Central Massachusetts Agency on Aging, and the Worcester Senior Center.

We are also pleased to announce two important initiatives that begin this month. A LGBT Bereavement Support Group and a series of historic Town Meetings for LGBT Seniors. Both programs are described in this edition.

We are pleased to inform you that a state wide program funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and facilitated by The LGBT Aging Project and Ethos will be launching this Fall in Massachusetts.  This initiative consists of six free LGBT Bereavement Groups each in different parts of the state.  Each group will run for six consecutive weeks and will be led by a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in bereavement issues in the LGBT Community.

The free group is open to any lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender individuals who have experienced the loss of a loved one (family member, friend, partner/spouse). The first two groups will launch in October. One group in Worcester another in Boston. The other group locations include Cambridge, South Shore, Northampton and Cape Cod.

The Boston group will meet Wednesday evenings starting October 22
The Worcester group will meet Tuesday evenings starting October 21
Both groups will run from 6:00 to 7:30pm

Please help in spreading the word about this free service to the LGBT community.  Pass this information on to anyone you know who is coping with the loss of a loved one.

Questions about the group can be addressed to Bob Linscott at (617) 477-6610

Referrals / Registration can go directly to the group facilitator, Beth Prullage, LICSW at (413) 695-2236.

Historic Town Meeting for LGBT Senior and Caregivers - Come And Make Your Voice Heard!

For the first time in the Greater Boston area, The LGBT Aging Project and five Area Agencies on Aging will conduct two Town Meetings to hear directly from LGBT seniors and caregivers about your needs, interests, values, questions and concerns and how their agencies can help. These state funded agencies are reaching out to LGBT seniors because they want to know how they can serve you best. The goal of the Town Meeting is to help inform the upcoming 2010-2013 Area Plan on Aging. Let's make LGBTs part of that plan!

Participating agencies include: Boston Elderly Commission, HESSCO, Minuteman Senior Services, Somerville Cambridge Elder Services and Springwell.

LGBT seniors and caregivers are invited to attend one of the two Town Meetings - both of which will take place at our current LGBT meal sites cosponsored by Ethos. Both locations are accessible by MBTA and have handicap access.

SAGE's Fourth Annual National Conference on LGBT Aging

SAGE (Services and Advocacy for Gay and Lesbian Elders), a New York City-based organization, continues to provide elders with the opportunity and space to join together and fight discrimination in housing, health care, and social services. This fall -- on October 13-14th, 2008-- SAGE will be hosting its Fourth National Conference on LGBT Aging in Brooklyn, New York. There, researchers, advocates, activists, national organizations, and elders with an unwavering interest in LGBT Aging issues will have the opportunity to share and learn from a combination of over 90 workshops, symposiums, and roundtables, including sessions on the most recent research on LGBT aging statistics; religious perspectives on LGBT aging; LGBT senior visibility in the media; fighting ageism in the workforce; finding and creating an LGBT community in rural areas; retirement and monetary rights; as well as specific sessions tailored to older gay men and to older lesbians.

In addition, there will also be a Pre-Conference Institute on Sunday, October 12, featuring an in-depth discussion on LGBT Housing, titled "Structuring Your Community's Conversation on Choosing a Model of Intentional and Inclusive Communities." This ground-breaking national discussion on LGBT elder housing is being crafted by some of the leaders in the field today: Gay and Lesbian Housing of West Hollywood, Stonewall Communities (Boston), Village Care of New York, openhouse of San Francisco, and Barbary Lane (Bay Area, CA).

About The LGBT Aging Project

The mission of the LGBT Aging Project is to ensure that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender elders have equal access to the life-prolonging benefits, protections, services, and institutions that their heterosexual neighbors take for granted.
