No time in class? Use this tutorial as prework for explaining the DiSC Model and the PPSS General Characteristics Report.
|
Recently, a client asked if I thought it would be okay for people to take the assessment and read their report before the class so that there would be more time available in class for other activities. I explained my concern about the judgments people make if they haven't learned different does not equal wrong. I created this tutorial as a response (and hopefully a solution) to her problem. Please feel free to download it and use it with your clients.

Greetings!
After a surprising election and many distressing financial predictions, I think it is time for some new ideas. What I'm seeing is that these times are not very forgiving--businesses who were marginally surviving are now going out of business. For quite awhile, many of us have known that things had to change but frankly the pain wasn't great enough for many companies and industries to do anything differently. As long as they were making reasonable profits there was no motivation for large scale change. Now that marginal business operations are failing, people are realizing that re-thinking your business practices is critical to surviving and thriving.
I started in consulting in 1975, working for a firm who was called in when companies were in trouble. Our job was to measure performance, develop systems and reduce head-count. I landed in the human side of productivity as the result of my experience implementing change while I was with this firm. I learned that it didn't matter how accurate our measurements were or how good our performance systems were, human intervention was still required to get the results we needed. Consulting methodologies have changed since then but we still need to deal with the impact of interpersonal interaction on work effectiveness if we are going to get results. I discovered the DiSC Classic assessment in 1978 and began using it to help clients navigate this difficult territory and I still find DiSC tools essential to any consulting assignment. In 2009, I hope to tie what I know about DiSC to Lean Manufacturing Principles and Value Stream Management, so stay tuned!!

Using DiSC Assessments to Understand Group Dynamics
|
Groups of people have unique interpersonal dynamics that can be explored using DISC tools.
DiSC PPSS includes a Behavioral Tendency Continuum in the Multiple PPS Report that can be used for facilitating a dialogue about a particular group's dynamics. The Continuum plots each team member on 32 different behaviors. Attached is the Continuum from a recent team training with an operations group in contract logistics. We used this Continuum as a tool for talking about how the team members interacted while we were doing process mapping. Some interesting dynamics have been highlighted on the first page (click on the page to see a larger version). Check out the complete report below. Sample Multiple Person Comparison Report (now found in the DiSC Classic section of EPIC)
The DiSC Indra Group Report also can be used to explore team dynamics. This report includes a 50 behavior Continuum and a Relationship Fit Matrix for understanding effectiveness and comfort in team relationships.

A Great Book For Understanding Cultural Differences
|
People often try to use the DISC model to explain cultural differences. However, the DISC model is based on individual differences in personality traits not on the differences in cultures. The Hofstedes' research is helpful in understanding cultural differences in the key areas of power distance, individualism vs. collectivism, uncertainty avoidance, masculinity and femininity, and long-term vs. short-term orientation. How an individual sees him/herself in his/her culture or the amount of conflict an individual experiences within certain cultures can be best understood by the combination of both research in DISC and research in cultural differences.

I'm looking forward to "living in interesting times" where we are all challenged to find better solutions to complex situations in a rapidly morphing world. If I thought I could coast at this time in my life, all I have to do is think of my 89 year-old father who is still running his 50-year old electronics company and dealing with difficult clients (like GM) and difficult problems (finances, developing new technology, developing new markets--China, India and Brazil). If he can be energized to face yet another recession with fortitude and optimism, so can I!
Sincerely,
Pamela
