ADP Client Close Up ~ Robert
shelley with puppets

Robert Caddick is a talented and interesting person or as his wife, Eva, says, "He has many ideas and surprises."

His talents really show up in the Arc's Adult Day Program when he helps cook for "Fun Fridays" lunch with ADP Instructor Dody Powell. He is known for his Spanish Rice and pizza. Many agree that his pencil sketches created during the ADP Art Program should be framed. He sculpted a miniature office desk with computer on top out of clay. The letters ARC on the monitor just one of the creative details he sculpted. He even repaired and remodeled an old bike into a beautiful classic.

Robert enjoys talking about trivia, current events and his opinion about everything. "As you talk with him you can feel his happiness surround you," shares Marion Jackson, ADP Instructor.

Robert appreciates the people in his. His wife, family, friends, The Arc and, of course, his many creative abilities.

Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorders

The Arc's Patti Thomas, Associate Director, Hollie Ingle, SocRec Coordinator and Colleen Nelson, RecTherapy Coordinator are engaged in a very challenging and rewarding extension class with UC Davis on Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Autism Spectrum Disorders, range from a severe form, called Autistic Disorder, to a milder form, Asperger Syndrome.

"We want to better understand and serve our clients who are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders, "explains Ingle. Arc staff will be receiving valuable trainings and information from these three individuals once they are certified.

There will be informative updates here in the newsletter each month. For more info, please, call Patti Thomas.

RT Cooking Class ... Yum!

Last Thursday a group of Socialization and Rec Therapy clients gathered to make beef stroganoff in the Arc's Pavilion kitchen. Clients happily spent time together while learning valuable cooking and socialization skills.

"It's always so much fun cooking with the RT clients," said Colleen Nelson, RT Coordinator," and the dinner after was delicious."

Clients in the Independent Living Programs get together twice a month to develop their cooking and socialization skills.

Looking for something fun and educational for your client? Why not join us at the next cooking class on Monday, February 11th? Please, call Colleen for time and location.

FOCUS Support Group

FOCUS is a support-based program for families and/or caregivers of children with special needs, where caregivers share their triumphs, frustrations and fears with others who have been there.

"I would like to welcome any family who has a loved one with a disability to visit our FOCUS dinner and support group," explains Elizabeth Owen, Family Support Coordinator, "It's a wonderful opportunity to build a supportive network and childcare is provided."

FOCUS group meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. Dinner starts at 5:30 and support group follows. For further details, please, contact Elizabeth.

ILP's "Baby Thyme"

"ILP's first Baby Thyme meeting of 2008 was great fun," says Bonnie Bethel, ILP Parenting Coordinator, "The children played happily together while the mothers got to know each other and shared their experiences." Baby Thyme is open to clients who are pregnant or have small children. During the meetings clients learn valuable parenting skills, develop supportive friendships, share experiences and positive self-esteem.

The next meeting is Feb 27th. For more info, please, contact Bonnie.

Emergency Awareness Staff Training

During the recent storm Arc Program Coordinators and Instructors contacted each and every one of their clients.

"We made sure that all clients had flashlights, food, water and a safe place to go during the power outages." said Bonnie Bethel, Parenting Coordinator, "Some instructors even went above and beyond the call of duty."

A special thank you Dana Daniell for not only checking on his own clients but for also going door to door at the Hartford Place to assure all the residents were doing fine.

Another special thank you to Maria Barboza for helping one of her clients with two small children who was out of power for several days. Maria brought over a "fun" flash light for the little boy and hot meals.

Thanks to all the dedicated instructors and coordinators who helped our clients weather the storm!
