ILLINOIS MINIMUM WAGE INCREASES JULY 1st On July 1st, Illinois' minimum wage will increase from the current $8.00 per hour to $8.25 per hour. This increase is the third and final annual increase established under the current law.
IRMA members will recall that in 2007, despite the opposition of IRMA, the General Assembly approved, and then-Governor Rod Blagojevich signed into law, Public Act 94-1072 . This law increased Illinois' minimum wage from $6.50 per hour to $7.50 per hour and established annual twenty-five cent increases every July 1st through 2010. Unless a new law is passed by the Assembly and signed into law by the Governor, Illinois' minimum wage will now remain at $8.25 per hour. As of this writing, Illinois' minimum wage is $1.00 per hour higher than the Federal minimum wage, $1.00 per hour higher than all of our border states (i.e. Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, and Wisconsin), and the third highest in the country behind Washington and Oregon.
You may click here to read the entire Illinois Minimum Wage Law or, to read the Public Act that enacted the annual increases, click here. If you require additional information, please do not hesitate to contact IRMA. Public Act

| Greetings!
Food for Thought Statistics show that we lose more fools on this day than on all other days of the year put together. This proves, by the numbers left in stock, that one Fourth of July per year is now inadequate, the country has grown so. Mark Twain (1835 - 1910) As we enter the month of July and (many of us) prepare for a three-day weekend, might I suggest that you ask, remind, or nudge your co-workers and employees to be mindful of fireworks, drinking and driving, or even grilling accidents. When I was managing banking centers, it always seemed that this was THE weekend when folks returned with injuries or horror stories to tell. So--to all our faithful Chamber members-- please be careful this weekend!
Now let's focus on the positive. Let's talk a little bit about the Mt. Prospect dining experience. If I had a word to define the culinary experience locally it would be "character." In almost every instance, one of the owners of the restaurant appears to be omnipresent. When I bring clients in to Retro Bistro I know that either Chris or Lorraine will be there to greet me and make me feel welcome. I have come to believe that Vic must live at Bogie's Ale House. I'll give Rick at El Sombrero a pass on Mondays and Tuesdays to spend some time with his little girls. Katie isn't always at Capannari's because she's too busy being involved with everything else in the community. Nobody contributes more to the feeling of community in Mt. Prospect than Katie, Jim, Ken, and Meg at Capannari's. And it's been rare that I've visited the Blues Bar and didn't get a specific recommendation for either food or drink from John. Now let me share some of my favorite local items. I invite you to share yours with me at MPutz@EnergyVeterans.com. I may share them in a future story.
El Sombrero: Spinach Enchiladas with a margarita, good stuff. Giacomo's: THE PLACE for Chicken Marsala and the nicest, most generous people in the world. Bogie's Ale House: Anything goes well with their onion straws but I love their tuna melt and there is nothing "mini" about their dessert cookie. Le Peep: Le Petit French toast is my favorite but Mike is always willing to whip up Chilaquiles for my wife-even when it's not on the menu. Culver's: their Mushroom and Swiss Butterburger is dangerous and I HAVE TO go to Culver's when their flavor of the day is Butter Pecan (if I want to stay married). Capannari's Ice Cream: My favorite is Coconut Chip. Does anyone else have a strange reaction to their Black Forest Licorice? My Irish mother enjoys the Guinness flavor. Moretti's: If you're not getting pizza, I recommend the Chicken Vesuvio. Jameson's Charhouse: Any steak or any kabob. They're all good. Blues Bar: Their Cajun Seared Tilapia is special. Order it with a Half-Acre beer. Little Villa: I've been ordering the Hawaiian Pizza for at least ten years now. Buffalo Wild Wings: Wings. Duh. Their sauces make the difference. Get lots of napkins.
Lastly, I'd like to extend a special welcome to Five Guys, Jersey Mike's, and Katie's Kitchen. I've already had very positive experiences at your locations as well. Welcome to the Mt. Prospect Chamber of Commerce! By now you've figured out why I no longer fit into my old jeans. Maybe I should start training for the 5K run later this year. Many of these restaurants will be taking part in this year's Downtown Block Party coming up on Saturday, July 24th. For more information, visit the Chamber's website at: www.mountprospectchamber.org
Cheers!

Money Saving Tips from the Chamber:
Take Advantage of NEW Tax Benefits for Small Business Two new tax benefits are now available to employers hiring workers who were previously unemployed or only working part time. These provisions are part of the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act enacted into law March 18, 2010. Employers who hire unemployed workers this year (after Feb. 3, 2010 and before Jan. 1, 2011) may qualify for a 6.2-percent payroll tax incentive, in effect exempting them from their share of Social Security taxes on wages paid to these workers after March 18, 2010. Check with your payroll company or tax accountant to see how you would qualify. |
