In the past week, I have heard three different people reference the story of the six blind men and the elephant.  So, not being known for my originality, I will repeat one version of it here:

Six blind men each touch a different part of an elephant and are asked to describe the animal based upon what they feel.
"The blind man who feels a leg says the elephant is like a pillar; the one who feels the tail says the elephant is like a rope; the one who feels the trunk says the elephant is like a tree branch; the one who feels the ear says the elephant is like a hand fan; the one who feels the belly says the elephant is like a wall; and the one who feels the tusk says the elephant is like a solid pipe." 1

Like all of the various businesses in the Chamber of Commerce, each of the blind men has their own perspective on what they need to survive and thrive in the current economy.

The Mt. Prospect Chamber of Commerce is very much like that elephant to the various member businesses.  To some, the Chamber is a means to meet other professionals in similar or mutually beneficial industries.  To others, particularly the larger businesses, the updates from Springfield are of particular importance.  Many businesses enjoy the credibility and sense of community that simply comes with having the Chamber sticker on the door.  The more assertive businesses take advantage of the ability to market to other Member businesses. And others (myself included) enjoy attending the after-hours events and ribbon-cutting ceremonies to see what's new with everybody.

There are many more benefits that can be gained via your Chamber membership.  But they will be different for each of you.  Please share your success stories with me at MPutz@EnergyVeterans.com and I'll share them in future newsletters.

And don't stand behind the elephant.

ITT Tech-Mt. Prospect Celebrates National Library Week

In April, ITT Tech-Mount Prospect celebrated National Library Week, adopting the American Library Association theme "Communities Thrive @ Your Library."  During the festive week, ITT Tech students enjoyed a number of activities including a "Poetry Slam," where students composed and presented their own verse; an essay writing competition; as well as a meeting of the campus book club. Reflecting on Library Week, Dean Shelby Krzyzak comments, "Students thrive at our school in part because of the support of our campus library and its wide variety of resources.  In turn, the ITT Tech library thrives because our library is part of a larger family of libraries in the North Suburban Library System. We are especially grateful for the friendship of the Mount Prospect Public Library.  They have served on our Academic Advisory Committee; partnered with us in resource sharing and assisted us with various special projects. Their role in the community and support of our school is very much appreciated."

The Week in Review

Chamber Tax Initiatives Pass Both Houses
The House Revenue Committee and the Senate Commerce Committee approved the Chamber's initiatives this week aimed at providing tax relief to Illinois cooperatives and publicly-traded partnerships.
The House signed off on SB 1826 (Sullivan/Mautino) to eliminate an erroneous tax decision that disadvantages cooperatives, subjecting them to double taxation.  The bill was amended in committee to address some technical concerns on the behalf of the Department of Revenue.  The bill passed unanimously.
DCEO Reporting Legislation Still Awaiting Final Vote in Senate
The Senate Commerce Committee sent HB 5230 (Bradley/Murphy) to the Senate floor to provide a common-sense approach to reducing the paperwork burden on Illinois' businesses that currently receive or are seeking to take advantage of state economic development incentives.

Restrictions on State Contract Renewals Remains in House

The Senate last week approved SB 375 (Kotowski/Walker) by a vote of 49-0-1 to eliminate automatic state contract renewals and extensions and instead require all proposed renewals or extensions valued at more than $249,999 to be justified before the Procurement Policy Board (PPB).  The renewal or extension would only be allowed to move forward if the PPB does not object to the proposal within 30 calendar days after the initial request was made.  The bill passed out of House Executive committee this week and remains on House 2nd Reading.

Expansion of Prevailing Wage Remains in Committee Yet Again

The Senate Labor Committee did not act again this week on a measure that would expand the state's prevailing wage to including the transportation of aggregate or excavated material at public works projects.  HB 6112 (Flider/Haine) has been pushed in other forms before to close what labor unions have deemed a "loophole" in the state's Prevailing Wage Law.  The legislation, however, threatens to increase costs on state construction projects by as much as $10 million per construction season, according to the Department of Transportation.

Telecommunications Modernization Moves Forward/Redistricting Efforts Fail
Negotiations on the telecommunications re-write are proceeding well and it appears that legislation is likely to pass.  The legislation was expected to be heard in committee this week but last minute wrangling tied up the advancement but we expect it to be heard next week.

REd Ribbon ClubMcKay Nursery Company's "Color It Green" Tree Donation Beautifies Museum Campus

As part of the restoration of the Museum Campus grounds, the Mount Prospect Historical Society was proud and happy to receive a donation of a Donald Wyman Crabapple tree from McKay Nursery.  This donation is due to McKay's "Color It Green" initiative, and was facilitated by their local representative Kathy Uszler, who owns a local landscape design firm known as the Plant Manager.

"We are so pleased that our program can assist in restoring the historic grounds of the historical society's museum campus.  Crabapples were specified in the original landscape design a number of years ago, and we hope the Donald Wyman Crab we provided will grow and bloom for many years," said Uszler.  According to Greg Peerbolte, executive director of the Historical Society, several memorial benches were funded as part of the Central School capital fund and it is hoped this new tree will provide shade to one or two of them as it matures.

Assisting with the planting were Kathy Uszler, Greg Peerbolte, and members of the Garden Club committee, including Mary Soyka, Rita Waters, Judy Schliessmann, Mary Lange and Village Trustee Arlene Juracek, also a member of the Historical Society Board.
