Hi all,
On a global scale: King's Point Pottery has started the production of a line of pottery that will help raise funds for those in need in Japan. This special edition vase, as well as other ways you can help, can be viewed on their blog page at http://www.kingspointpottery.com/blog.htm. We wish them good luck with this important project.
And here at the Craft Council: As mentioned, we are getting a new website and in order for Members to access their log-in, Membership dues need to be paid in full. If you haven't paid for this year (dues were due in January), or if you are not sure, contact Craig at info@craftcouncil.nl.ca immediately. Member News is also going to be affected with the change. We now have so many listings each week that our Member News is starting to read like a book. Once the new website is up, I will only be sending out Craft Council news each week to make the news less cumbersome to get through. However, to get the word out from other organizations, there will be an Events/Opportunities listing on the new site that Members can check. This listing will be updated daily and will provide an even more comprehensive listing of goings on. So there are big improvements afoot. I can't wait to share the new site with you all! Have a good week get out for a walk today!
Regards, Caroline Clarke Director of Communications

Professional Opportunities
NEW! 3) Call for Panel Sessions: 2011 UAAC Conference, Concordia University (QC) Deadline: May 15, 2011 Post-disciplinarity and Sloppy Craft - A Critical EngagementIs "sloppy craft" fine art or hopeless amateurism? Does post-disciplinarity exist "in the ruins of outmoded disciplinary structures" - mediating between nostalgia for disciplinary boundaries and excitement at the intellectual freedom their demise might offer - or could interdisciplinarity still offer much to illuminate issues attached to "sloppy craft"? And importantly, what are the historical antecedents to this recent turn in craft discourse? This panel seeks to critically assess the value of the post-disciplinary method proposed as a way forward for the making of craft and its discourse (advocated most prominently by craft theorist Glenn Adamson). We invite speakers to consider ways the following terms/concepts might interact with "sloppy craft" and the post-disciplinarity advocated for it: DIY, amateur, traditional, conceptual art, intentionality, materiality, function, community, skilful, historical, design. Speakers may also consider the advantages of an interdisciplinary approach to these terms/concepts in their application to "sloppy craft." NEW! 17) ACI Releases Election 2011 Advocacy Card (NL)
The Association of Cultural Industries (ACI) released today it's Election 2011 "Button-Hole" Kit: a printed postcarddesigned to be used by artists and arts organizations as a reference when talking to and questioning candidates. Whether on the doorstep, at rallies and town halls, or over the phone, the six questions get to the heart of some of the most pressing issues facing the culture sector nationally. ACI Executive Director George Murray says, "This kit has been in the planning since the last election, when a very uncoordinated pro-culture campaign rose up to meet the very coordinated attacks on culture and the arts coming from the federal government. This time, we hope to provide artists and activists across the province with a base set of questions to confront candidates with, so that we might direct not only the flow of the conversation at the time, but the information that gets relayed back to the various party-centrals." The culture sector in Newfoundland and Labrador is worth over $400,000,000 annually, and in Canada it is worth a staggering $45 billion in goods and services, nearly 7% of the GDP. "I hope these button-hole cards will help artists develop and direct their line of questioning when interacting with candidates," says Murray, "putting candidates and party platforms under some real scrutiny, as well as pressure to directly address some tough issues." To view the electronic version of this advocacy card, please visit it directly at http://www.acinl.ca/publication/3/download. For more information or comment, please contact ACI Executive Director George Murray at 709.738.4333
