Well, the Newfoundland and Labrador craft community has had our fair share of 15 seconds fame this past week!  And we'd like to share...

First of all, Wesley Harris and Hilary Rice have both made the papers. A wonderful article about Wesley was written by Jessica Butler (a talented craftsperson herself!) and published in The Independent.

The Telegram did a feature by Joan Sullivan covering both shows exhibiting in the Gallery right now by Wesley and Hilary (have you seen them yet?).

Secondly, our fearless leader, Anne Manuel was called this week by a writer at Sea and be Scene who was looking to do a story on a craftsperson who uses recycled materials to make one-of-a-kind pieces.  Janet Peter came to mind of course and now you can read the entire article here.

And finally, John Goodyear made a big win at the 2011 Niche Awards this year being awarded an "astonishing" three awards! " With a limit of three entries per artist or artist team, this is the highest possible honor which can be achieved. Works from John Goodyear which have been recognized are the pieces entitled: "Late Harvest Blend" in the Home Furnishings: Teapot category, "Fire Squall" in the category Wood: Painted/Colored and "Autumn Gold" in Wood: Turned/Carved category."   You can view images of the works at  www.NICHEAwards.com. And don't forget to get down to The Rooms Art Gallery and see the joint show Crafting Paradox which features John's work along with Jason Holley and Cal Lane happening until May 15, 2011.

Congratulations to you all!  We're some proud to be part of this vital and creative community!

Have a good week all!

Regards,
Caroline Clarke

10) Call for Entry: Five Island Art Gallery, The Newfoundland Emigrant Trail, Tors Cove (NL)

Show Dates: September 18 - October 21, 2011

Being in Newfoundland is a strange and almost surreal experience, making you feel simultaneously at home abroad. You are in another country with its own complex history, and on another continent a vast ocean away from Ireland, but you keep encountering and recognizing intimate echoes of home. (Michael Coady, Carrick-on-Suir).

To celebrate the tradition and history of the visual arts, to honour the people and the place of our common ancestry, and to build on our Irish-Newfoundland and Labrador connections project of 2010, the Five
Island Art Gallery invites submissions for a juried exhibition of art works inspired by the story of emigration from the South East Coast of Ireland to Newfoundland during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Works submitted can include paintings, sketches, textile art and sculptures. We welcome two- and three-dimensional contemporary works that capture a piece of the story of the Newfoundland Emigrant Trail.

Jurying will take place by digital images, with selection based on
interpretation, originality and technique.

The Opening Reception is scheduled for 2:00 - 5:00 pm September 18,
2011 at the Five Island Art Gallery in Tors Cove, NL and will run until
October 21, 2011. Some of the artists, along with special guests from an Irish delegation visiting Newfoundland with the Festival of the Sea, will be in attendance.

Visit www.fiveislandartgallery.blogspot.com for regular updates on the
exhibit as they become available.

Deadline: April 15, 2011

Recognize your business partners in grand fashion with the Business for the Arts Awards.

The Edmund C. Bovey Award is given to an individual business professional who has demonstrated exemplary leadership support of the arts. The winner of the Bovey Award receives a unique work of art and $20,000 to donate to the arts organizations(s) of his or her choice.

The Globe and Mail Business for the Arts Awards are comprised of four awards recognizing companies that have shown an outstanding commitment to the arts in Canada. Awards include: Best Entrepreneurial Partnership, Most Effective Corporate Program, Most Innovative Marketing Sponsorship and Small Business Partnership.

The Arnold Edinborough Award recognizes an individual young professional under the age of 40 who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and volunteerism in the arts. The Arnold Edinborough Award winner receives a unique work of art and $5,000 to donate to the arts organization(s) of his or her choice.

Business for the Arts is partnering with the Globe and Mail and CTV/Bravo to help you recognize the businesses and volunteers who have helped your cultural organization to thrive and flourish. Nominations are now open for the Business for the Arts awards, recognizing Canada's great business leaders in the arts. Winning arts-business partnerships will be profiled through our national media partnerships, (including a series of ads in the Globe and Mail and a 30min segment on Bravo's Arts & Minds), and on-stage at our annual awards gala in the Fall, which attracts 400+ of Canada's arts and business leaders. This is a fabulous opportunity to thank your private sector partners on a grand scale for all they do for your organization.

There is certainly an individual in your midst who has donated tremendous amounts of time, talent and treasure who is deserving of the Bovey Award, and the $20,000 prize that comes with it to donate to the arts organization of their choice; or an under 40 star volunteer who would be eligible for the Arnold Edinborough Award, and the complementing $5,000 award prize, again to be donated to the arts organization of their choice. There is also likely a small business and national corporation who has done wonders for your organization as a sponsor, both in-kind and/or monetarily. This is your chance to tell these stories of private philanthropy and contribution from the private sector. And our chance as a sector to help inspire others to follow suit!
