10) Call for Entry: 2011 Cheongju International Craft Biennale, Korea
Since its debut in 1999, the Cheongju International Craft Biennale(CICB) has biennially extended the horizon of Craft through a variety of themes, stretching the vision of contemporary craft. Canada was the official guest country in 2009, and Finland holds the honor in 2011. Artists the world over are invited to submit work to the annual competition.
The CICB has brought about innovation and change in the craft world - but for 2011, the Biennale will focus on the lessons of traditional craft in contemporary work through two pillars: usefulness(necessity) and artistry(beauty). Essentially, the event will focus on 'craft in a daily lift here and now'. Hence the 2011 theme: ''Not the New, Just the Necessary'', suggesting an aesthetic of usefulness beyond the implemental. Deep and diverse craft-interpretations on the theme will be shown through the 7th CHEONGJU International Craft Competition, and craft artists the world over are encouraged to submit.

NEW! 16) Eastern Edge Gallery, International Women's Day Exhibition, St. John's (NL) Artist Talks + Opening Reception: Saturday, March 5, 3-5pm Show Dates: March 5 - April 16, 2011 Goody-B Wiseman (ME) Superlovestarpower 2: The Album Project Jo-Anne Balcaen (QC) The Longer I Wait, the Better it Feels music, obsession, fantasy...Superlovestarpower 2: The Album Project recasts iconic album cover photographs from the 1960s and 1970s as short films. Recreating these now well-known snapshots and inserting them into speculative narratives, Goody-B Wiseman re-imagines the possibilities of these still images when they are re-inserted into linear time. Goody-B Wiseman lives and works in both the wilds of Downeast Maine and Los Angeles. She works in a variety of media including sculpture, film and printed matter and is primarily engaged with the use and structure of narrative. The Longer I Wait, the Better it Feels presents a series of audio and visual installations that deal in one way or another with the trappings of popular music, obsessive and delusional fandom, and innocent fantasy. Jo-Anne Balcaen's work examines the elusive nature of happiness, and how the commercialization of desire can create an inflated sense of expectation and a distorted sense of self. Jo-Anne Balcaen is a Montreal-based artist who has exhibited her work in venues throughout Quebec, Canada, Europe, and the US. 709-739-1882 easternedgegallery@gmail.comwww.easternedge.ca

Lane creates percussive lace works from recycled metal; Holley makes chain mail with ceramic links; and Goodyear transforms pieces of wood into intricate sculptures. Also opening that evening: Goya: The Disasters of War and Los Caprichos - Organized by the National Gallery of Canada AND Robert Sinclair: Fluidity Everyone is welcome. 19) Two New Exhibitions: Red Ochre Gallery, St. John's (NL) Opening Reception: March 4 from 5-8pm Solo exhibition by Sylvia Bendzsa "Interrelationships --- Land, Sea, Sky" "Interrelationships" is about landscapes, our landscapes. "My paintings are a response to the atmospheric sublime qualities that exist in land, sea and sky. I seek to invoke the timelessness of place that surrounds us. By capturing these responses on canvas, they become a moment in time plucked from reality into a new reality."
Solo Exhibition by George Horan "PASSAGES" "These paintings explore the ambiguity of the boundary between the land and sea. They are concerned with the passage between the concrete and the ephemeral, the known and the mysterious. This in turn is a metaphor for my passage in life. I hope these qualities will have a resonance in the thoughts and feelings of others."
Red Ochre Gallery 96 Duckworth St., 726 6422 These exhibitions continues until March 26th 2011 http://www.redochregallery.ca
