BOXED IN - The Craft Council Gallery and The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery are planning a joint exhibition of small sculptural works to show in both Galleries in 2012 and to travel in Canada in 2013 and 2014. Curator is Dr. Denis Longchamps of Montreal, and title / theme is Boxed In. The work will fit in a specific box and spring from the idea of the box itself or of one of its metaphors.

To further explain this project, and to explore the potential of working to a specific theme, the Craft Council is planning a workshop to be held on Saturday, March 5, with Denis and with two local artists as resource people. Our goal is to encourage and enable as many proposals from Newfoundland and Labrador craftspeople and artists as possible.

Date: Saturday, March 5, 2011
Time: 10am - 2pm, followed by 1-on-1 discussions with M. Longchamps
Cost: $20 each, plus $10 for a 1-on-1 session; lunch provided

NEW! 8) Call for Entry: 2011 Cheongju International Craft Biennale, Korea

Since its debut in 1999, the Cheongju International Craft Biennale(CICB) has biennially extended the horizon of Craft through a variety of themes, stretching the vision of contemporary craft. Canada was the official guest country in 2009, and Finland holds the honor in 2011. Artists the world over are invited to submit work to the annual competition.

The CICB has brought about innovation and change in the craft world - but for 2011, the Biennale will focus on the lessons of traditional craft in contemporary work through two pillars: usefulness(necessity) and artistry(beauty). Essentially, the event will focus on 'craft in a daily lift here and now'. Hence the 2011 theme: ''Not the New, Just the Necessary'', suggesting an aesthetic of usefulness beyond the implemental. Deep and diverse craft-interpretations on the theme will be shown through the 7th CHEONGJU International Craft Competition, and craft artists the world over are encouraged to submit.

For more information on the competition, including details on how to apply, visit the website  at http://okcj.org/home/skins/8/4_1_en.html

9) Call for Submissions: Canadian Aboriginal Arts and Writing Challenge

Deadline: March 31, 2011

An initiative of The Historica-Dominion Institute, The Canadian Aboriginal Writing and Arts Challenge invites Aboriginal writers and artists (ages 14-29) to compose or create an original work that explores an aspect of Canadian Aboriginal history.

For the first time in the Challenge's seven-year history, the Institute is seeking two-dimensional visual art submissions. We hope the program's expansion to arts will make the Challenge available to a new audience of Aboriginal youth - those who instead express themselves through mediums like painting, drawing and photography.

Emerging writers and artists have their work judged by the foremost in the field, including artists Kent Monkman and Stan Bevan. Winning written entries are published in Canada's History magazine, and winning artwork is exhibited in a gallery. Finalists are awarded cash prizes of up to $2,000 and published on the program website, http://www.our-story.ca.

Every year, hundreds of Canadian youth are inspired to share their stories. Through writing and art, courageous young members of the community have come forward to interpret their heritage, community and culture while bringing awareness to Aboriginal identity. The newly expanded Canadian Aboriginal Arts and Writing Challenge offers renewed motivation for a new generation of Aboriginal artists and writers looking to make their mark on the Canadian cultural landscape.

Events and Exhibits

NEW! 14) New Exhibtion: The Rooms, Crafting Paradox, St. John's (NL)

Please join us at The Rooms on Friday March 4th at 7:30 pm for the opening reception for: Crafting Paradox

Crafting Paradox

This exhibition presents the work of Cal Lane, John Goodyear and Jason Holley. These artists work in different media and each has their own personal approach. Lane cuts and folds metal; Holley constructs ceramic pieces; and Goodyear sculpts wood. Commonly, there is a paradox that results from the tension between material and technique, form and content. Lane creates percussive lace works from recycled metal; Holley makes chain mail with ceramic links; and Goodyear transforms pieces of wood into intricate sculptures.

Also opening that evening:

Goya: The Disasters of War and Los Caprichos - Organized by the National Gallery of Canada

AND

Robert Sinclair: Fluidity

Everyone is welcome. For more information call The Rooms at 757-8000 or visit our website, www.therooms.ca

NEW! 15) Two New Exhibitions: Red Ochre Gallery, St. John's (NL)

Opening Reception: March 4 from 5-8pm

Solo exhibition by Sylvia Bendzsa "Interrelationships --- Land, Sea, Sky"
"Interrelationships" is about landscapes, our landscapes. "My paintings are a response to the atmospheric sublime qualities that exist in land, sea and sky. I seek to invoke the timelessness of place that surrounds us. By capturing these responses on canvas, they become a moment in time plucked from reality into a new reality."

Solo Exhibition by George Horan "PASSAGES"
"These paintings explore the ambiguity of the boundary between the land and sea. They are concerned with the passage between the concrete and the ephemeral, the known and the mysterious. This in turn is a metaphor for my passage in life. I hope these qualities will have a resonance in the thoughts and feelings of others."

Red Ochre Gallery
96 Duckworth St., 726 6422
These exhibitions continues until March 26th 2011
