NEW! 3) Call for Submissions: Canadian Aboriginal Arts and Writing Challenge
Deadline: March 31, 2011
An initiative of The Historica-Dominion Institute, The Canadian Aboriginal Writing and Arts Challenge invites Aboriginal writers and artists (ages 14-29) to compose or create an original work that explores an aspect of Canadian Aboriginal history.
For the first time in the Challenge's seven-year history, the Institute is seeking two-dimensional visual art submissions. We hope the program's expansion to arts will make the Challenge available to a new audience of Aboriginal youth - those who instead express themselves through mediums like painting, drawing and photography.
Emerging writers and artists have their work judged by the foremost in the field, including artists Kent Monkman and Stan Bevan. Winning written entries are published in Canada's History magazine, and winning artwork is exhibited in a gallery.
Finalists are awarded cash prizes of up to $2,000 and published on the program website, http://www.our-story.ca.Every year, hundreds of Canadian youth are inspired to share their stories. Through writing and art, courageous young members of the community have come forward to interpret their heritage, community and culture while bringing awareness to Aboriginal identity. The newly expanded Canadian Aboriginal Arts and Writing Challenge offers renewed motivation for a new generation of Aboriginal artists and writers looking to make their mark on the Canadian cultural landscape.
