Hope you're all surviving this patience testing February!

Two important things pass on this week!

1)
There will be NO OPEN STUDIO this Friday, February 18, 2011 as there is a birthday party booked.  Sorry for any inconvenience and the regular schedule will resume Saturday.

2) Exciting New Workshop Just Announced!
BOXED IN - The Craft Council Gallery and The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery are planning a joint exhibition of small sculptural works to show in both Galleries in 2012 and to travel in Canada in 2013 and 2014. Curator is Dr. Denis Longchamps of Montreal, and title / theme is Boxed In. The work will fit in a specific box and spring from the idea of the box itself or of one of its metaphors.

To further explain this project, and to explore the potential of working to a specific theme, the Craft Council is planning a workshop to be held on Saturday, March 5, with Denis and with two local artists as resource people. Our goal is to encourage and enable as many proposals from Newfoundland and Labrador craftspeople and artists as possible.

Date: Saturday, March 5, 2011
Time: 10am - 2pm, followed by 1-on-1 discussions with M. Longchamps
Cost: $20 each, plus $10 for a 1-on-1 session; lunch provided
Location: To be announced. If there is sufficient interest, we will set up a teleconference system to include members around the province.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Sharon at the Gallery gallery@craftcouncil.nl.ca.

Have a good week all!

Regards,
Caroline Clarke

NEW! 3) Call for Submissions: Canadian Aboriginal Arts and Writing Challenge

Deadline: March 31, 2011

An initiative of The Historica-Dominion Institute, The Canadian Aboriginal Writing and Arts Challenge invites Aboriginal writers and artists (ages 14-29) to compose or create an original work that explores an aspect of Canadian Aboriginal history.

For the first time in the Challenge's seven-year history, the Institute is seeking two-dimensional visual art submissions. We hope the program's expansion to arts will make the Challenge available to a new audience of Aboriginal youth - those who instead express themselves through mediums like painting, drawing and photography.

Emerging writers and artists have their work judged by the foremost in the field, including artists Kent Monkman and Stan Bevan. Winning written entries are published in Canada's History magazine, and winning artwork is exhibited in a gallery. Finalists are awarded cash prizes of up to $2,000 and published on the program website, http://www.our-story.ca.

Every year, hundreds of Canadian youth are inspired to share their stories. Through writing and art, courageous young members of the community have come forward to interpret their heritage, community and culture while bringing awareness to Aboriginal identity. The newly expanded Canadian Aboriginal Arts and Writing Challenge offers renewed motivation for a new generation of Aboriginal artists and writers looking to make their mark on the Canadian cultural landscape.
