Upcoming in the Craft Council Gallery will be the OPENING RECEPTION of two new exhibits Saturday, January 29, 2011 from 2 - 4pm.
In the Main Gallery WITNESS by Heather Reeves and Po Chun Lau An exhibition of figurative sculpture in bronze, burlap and wax by Po Chun Lau and quilt-like installations by Heather Reeves takes the viewer on an introspective journey.
In the Annex Gallery SHHH! An Exhibition of Textiles and Titillation by Stephanie Barry This show is about the secrets we carry, for others, and ourselves and the masks we wear for various purposes and reasons.
As usual, everyone is welcome!

2) Volunteer Coordinator Needed! Are you looking for a volunteer opportunity? The Craft Council is currently looking for someone to help coordinate our list of volunteers and to create a volunteer database. This would take a nominal time commitment and would be greatly appreciated. NEW! 8) Call for Submissions: Eyelevel Gallery, YLevel Young and Emerging Artists Show, Halifax (NS) Deadline: February 11, 2011 Show Dates: April 7 - May 7, 2011 Eyelevel Gallery is currently seeking submissions of new and engaging work for its annual YLevel young and emerging artists show. This exhibition is open to students in their final year of undergraduate studies, recent graduates who have finished their studies within the last 2 years, or artists within their first 2 years of their career. This is an open international call for those who are near and far! COME FROM AWAY!Referred to as the gateway to Canada, Halifax has a history that predates the formation of the Dominion of Canada and has played an integral role in the construction of the Canadian identity. Modern day Halifax is a destination city as opposed to a final destination as it sees many immigrants, students, cruise ships, and tourists each year. This constant flow of people continues to stimulate the city's deep cultural roots. 'Come From Away' is a curated show exploring the role Halifax plays in the development of Canadian culture and personal Canadian identity. This show addresses some of the key cultural signifiers of 'Canadian Identity' through exploring a variety of ideas and media. This show will embrace the diversity of culture in Halifax with an open call to inspired emerging artists who are interested in exploring their own voice within the Canadian cultural fabric in relation to Atlantic Canada. Eyelevel Gallery is asking artists to consider the influence Halifax has on the formation of their voice and artistic practice. We are encouraging work that pushes beyond the obvious and takes aim at trying to shake things up. Both Individual and collaborative work is welcome. We look forward to your submission! NEW! 11) Lean Manufacturing Certificate Program, St. John's (NL) Registration Deadline: January 21, 2011 Dates: January 24 - March 15, 2011 from 9am - 5pm each date Location: Fluvarium, 5 Nagles Place, St. John's Introduction:As companies aim to become more competitive/world-class by applying Lean Principles, they are realizing that they need to develop internal lean champions who can support and lead various initiatives and continuous improvement teams. The Lean Manufacturing Certificate Program Level is intended to develop strong supporters of lean. Overview:The Lean Manufacturing Certificate Program is a Six Day Program (6 modules) designed to meet the training needs of companies adopting the 'lean approach' to doing business. It provides theory and application of the key lean tools. It is also intended to allow them to better support the lean approach of their companies who are serious about improving profitability through reducing waste. Graduates receive a certificate, granted by Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters, Newfoundland & Labrador Division. Objectives:Upon successful completion of this interactive program, participants will be familiar with the principles and key tools supporting the company lean initiative. They should be strong contributors to the lean journey able to provide leadership on improvement teams and drive improvements in their areas of influence. NEW! 12) Finding Your Way to Trepassey: A Google Map Workshop Date: Tuesday, February 1, 2011 from 1-3pm Cost: $15 Location: Opportunities Complex, Trepassey On February 1st, 2011 at 1pm, Dale Jarvis and Mel Squarey with the Heritage Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador are hosting a two hour workshop at the Opportunities Complex, on how community groups can use Google Maps to help share local folklore and oral history. If you've looked for directions online, chances are you've come across Google Maps. Google's "My Maps" function is a free online tool where local points of interest can be showcased in an accessible manner. We'll show you how you can create your own map of your town or region that highlights photos, video, and audio clips about local heritage and culture. 16) Eastern Edge Gallery: Andy Jones Artist Residency, St. John's (NL) Dates: January 10 - February 19, 2011 Andy Jones, one of Newfoundland's most well-known actors and writers, will have a month long residency at Eastern Edge during which he will continue to develop the Abbie Table Project with visual artist Peter Breckon and members of the "Growing Up, Up In Cove" Collective. The centerpiece of the project is a 10' X 4' table inscribed with the personal story of Abbie Ellis Whiffen, Growing Up, Up in Cove. Narrating the life of a Newfoundland family engaged in the salt fishery from the 1920's to the 1950's, the story has been "illuminated" by several dozen contributors. His residency at Eastern Edge will include "performances" of the table in the form of public readings and interpretive theatre pieces. Using camouflage fabric as a central theme and material, Hunt's art considers the human costs of armed conflict balanced by a deep empathy for individuals, including soldiers, in areas of hostility. Hunt's nuanced installations contemplate the fragility and beauty of the human body. NEW! 19) Knitting Machine and Accessories for Sale! There is a Knitting Machine Model number KH940 with a regular carriage, lace carriage and attached ribber.
There are many accessories for this machine including: a four color, colorchanger; an extra tension rod to use with it so one does not have to be changing yarns when using more than four colors; and a garter carriage (and these are now difficult to find and costly). The machine has a lot of pre-programmed patterns and you can add your own. It will also hook up to a computer.
There are other items for sale including: a lot of conned yarns, mostly 100%pure wool and 8 cones of Panama Yarn (50%cotton); cleaning brush to clean the needle bed; some spare needles and machine oil; and a variety of Machine Knitting magazines and pattern books.
Everything is in excellent condition. Original cost was $2,700.00 for the machine and ribber when purchased. The colorchanger cost $240 and the garter carriage (second hand)cost between $400-$500. Owner will sell all of this for $1,500.00 firm plus cost of shipping from Milltown Bay, d'Espoir if you are unable to pick it up. Yarns, needles and oil, and the bar that slides into the machine can all still be purchased from GlenVally Custom Knits in PEI.

The full catalogue includes images of the works from the exhibition (presented at the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery) and a thorough essay by curator Christian Bernard Singer. NEW! 22) News from Audrey Feltham! Craft Council Member, Audrey Feltham of Atlelier West Studios recently produced a DVD in 2009 in response to a call from the Department of Education for Learning Resources. This DVD used the prints from the Cabot 500 series as a means of talking about Nfld. Culture and social/political history. The Learning Resource Centre contacted her last week and they have agreed to purchase the DVD for use in classrooms in the province! Way to go Audrey!
