Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador
Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador Member News
December 1, 2010

Hello everybody,

Comfort & Joy 2010 & a Celebration of Tibb's Eve
Opening Reception from 1 - 4pm, Saturday December 4th

This December 4th, 2010 the Craft Council Gallery opens its annual, juried holiday exhibition, Comfort and Joy.  With a special presentation of works inspired by cod in the Annex Gallery it also revives and celebrates a Christmas tradition that is distinctive to the province.  Tibb's Eve is a Newfoundland custom that goes back centuries in many outport communities.  Falling on the day before Christmas Eve, it was the start of the Christmas social season when the men in the community would visit each other and sample their home brew.  But for the women of the community it was often associated with preparing a meal of fish to observe the conclusion of the Advent fast, and serving salt cod for Christmas Eve.

Lively glass fish by Urve Manuel, fine textile cod for the wall by Kelly Bruton, memorable salt fish pottery by Alexis Templeton, and a rosy cheeked Santa with a fish barrel carved in wood by Kevin Coates are works inspired by the cod.  Other Craft Council members have been moved by other themes and traditions from the stars in the night sky to the snow under our feet.  Comfort and Joy presents the work of over 40 artists showing fine craft that is ideal for the home and gift list.  This year's holiday show will be the largest one to date.

The Opening Reception for the event takes place from 1 - 4pm during the Craft Council's day long Open House, which starts at 10am.  Enjoy story telling from 12 to 3 p.m., festive food, great company and a fabulous selection of handmade gifts.

Comfort and Joy runs from December 4th to the 19th.

NEW! 4) Workshop - Design Binder Evening, Anna Templeton Centre, St. John's (NL)

Date: Thursday, December 7 at 7pm

Psst...Did you know?
The Craft Council of Newfoundland & Labrador has a Design Binder!

And what is a Design Binder exactly?
It is a well developed resource with lots of images and useful information to assist individuals with their creative processes.

It was put together by Barb Daniel with lots of input from craft council members and staff. Knitters, hookers, weavers, painters, photographers - and anyone really - who is producing creative work will benefit from the information collected in the Design Binder. Beautiful images of NL craft & art work illustrate the use of line, texture, colour, division of space and all of the other elements and principles of design. You will find inspiration and "a ha" moments in its contents.

If you teach craft & art classes, then it is a phenomenal resource for developing & presenting lesson plans.

It also occurred to us that many of you may not know about the "Design Basics Kit" or Design Binder (as we usually call it).

And we want to change that.

Therefore, we invite you to attend a Design Binder Evening...Thursday, December 2, 7pm at the Anna Templeton Centre for Craft Art & Design

Susan Furneaux will present the binder, overview its contents, and demonstrate how it may be used in developing lesson plans.

All followed by coffee/tea & treats and the opportunity to ask questions, generate discussion, and a little socializing.

We hope you can make it....
Please RSVP so we know how many treats to prepare

And we look forward to hearing from you...and also extend this invitation to anyone who may be interested

NEW! 11) New Award For Visual Art Writers Thanks To Anonymous Donor (NL)
The Excellence in Visual Arts Awards (EVAs) are the province's only awards program for visual artists, and this year the EVAs will see another award category added to the existing four prizes. The Critical Eye Award recognizes the impact that critical art writing can have on a visual artists' career. Any writer worldwide who has written about a NL artist in any recognized print or online publication during the past calendar year is eligible for consideration. The winner was to receive $500, courtesy of an anonymous donor, but just recently a second anonymous donor came forward and doubled the prize money to $1,000.

This award, The Critical Eye Award, was initiated by an anonymous donor who wanted to encourage more critical writing about this province's artists - a crucial part of growing a visual artists' career.

Applications for the Critical Eye Award will be accepted along with applications to the Large Year Award, Long Haul Award, Emerging Artist Award and Kippy Goins Award until April 1st, 2011. The jury will be comprised of a member of the EVA Committee, a provincial visual arts professional and a national visual arts professional.

To be eligible for the Critical Eye Award, the writer may reside in any province of Canada or any country worldwide, as long as they have written about a Newfoundland Labrador artist within the preceding calendar year, from January 1 to December 31, in a recognized print or online publication.

24) Hockey Widows Support Group, Wesleyville (NL)
What: Hockey Night in Norton's Cove
Times: Whenever Hockey Night in Canada is scheduled for CBC television
No cost

Message from Janet...
"The idea here, is for people like me, who have absolutely no interest in hockey, but have a life partner who can't manage to live happily without it.  As much as I think Ron McClean is a cutie-pie, catching a glimpse of his entertaining eyebrow action isn't worth sitting through the boring game and worst of all, my husband trying to coach his favourite team from the couch.

So I'm introducing this new group to hang out at my studio and be productive!  Imagine how much can be accomplished during playoffs!  We also have to have a couple of intermissions during the evening to over-analyze what we've done so far.

At the end of the hockey season, we're going to have a short exhibit with an opening scheduled for the night of the Stanley Cup final game."

All are welcome to attend, no matter what your medium.

Also, don't miss the 9th Annual Norton's Cove Studio Christmas Party & Sale on December 17th, starting at 7pm.  Music, refreshment, and 20% off everything in the shop!
