Hello everybody,
The Craft Council is getting ready to celebrate Culture Days that is happening as part of a nationwide event from September 24-25, 2010 - that's right - it's next weekend!
We have planned quite a few events and so have some of our members.
One such member emailed us this information:
Cathy Driedzic Open Studio and Sale, 115 Gower Street, St. John's
Saturday September 25 and Sunday September 26 from 1 - 4pm each day
As part of Culture Days and Doors Open in St. John's, Cathy is opening her studio and gallery in her home at 115 Gower Street. The studio space occupies the third floor of a typical downtown row house designed by Southcott around 1894. There is a beautiful view of rooftops, St. John's harbour and the Narrows and visitors can try their hand at painting the view in watercolour.

On September 25th from 2-4pm, Caroline Clarke will be holding a demonstration in the Craft Council Gallery. The demonstration will be about printmaking with respect to her work in the Come All Ye! Second Verse exhibition currently on display.
Also on September 25th, The Clay Studio will be hosting a tile workshop at the CBC Building on 95 University Avenue in St. John's from 1 - 5pm. Local expert potters and Clay Studio instructors, Christina Dove and Lauren Skanes will be hostessing.
Artist Presentations for the Gallery Exhibits:
Friday, September 24th from 5:30-7pm
Artist Presentation for"Come All Ye - Second Verse". There will be live music and light refreshments as well as a panel discussion about the art with the artists with Dale Jarvis mediating.
And from Noon - 1pm on the same day, Rosalind Ford will also be presenting for her show in the Annex Gallery, "Puffins, Kittiwakes, and Murres...Oh My!".

A juried, multi media exhibition featuring a variety of unique works for the festive season. Unique works for collectors to give themselves or gifts for family and friends. The exhibits' theme allows room for work that reflects general seasonal and thematic threads. You can enter up to three pieces in any medium - think whimsical or serious, contemporary or traditional. notice of approval of the Craft Council's application to the Business
Development Program of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency has just
been received. The provincial contribution to the program was included
in the 2010/2011 provincial budget for the Department of Innovation,
Trade and Rural Development. Economic Development Officers around the
province are ready to receive applications.
Applications for the New Creations Fund, the Studio Start-Up Fund and Scholarships and Study Awardsshould be forwarded to the Craft Council. These funds are supplied to
the Craft Council from the CIDP, and our Awards Committee will meet
shortly to consider applications.

Given the success of last year's Demonstration Project at The Fine Craft and Design Fair, the Craft Fair Committee has decided to continue the project in THE Christmas Craft Fair 2010 (newly renamed) and is seeking expression of interest in the following areas:
Craft Fair Demonstrations Coordinator
The length and full schedule of the proposed demonstration project requires a person to coordinate the event. The Craft Fair Demonstrations Coordinator will be responsible for all tasks related to the organization, promotion and implementation of the Demonstrations Booth for the two weekends of THE Christmas Craft Fair, Nov.11-14 and Nov.18-21. Please forward your expression of interest in this position to THE Christmas Craft Fair Coordinator at l_pike@nf.sympatico.ca by Sept. 17.
Craft Fair Demonstrators
The Craft Fair Committee is inviting expressions of interest from people who would like to participate in the Craft Fair Demonstration Project at THE Christmas Craft Fair, on either Nov.11-14 weekend or Nov 18-21 weekend. The demonstration should be 2-3 hours in length and be observational or interactive giving visitors a first-hand look at how craft is made and/or providing an opportunity to experience the "making". Write a brief description of a demonstration you would like to do. Email your proposal to THE Christmas Craft Fair Coordinator at l_pike@nf.sympatico.ca by Sept. 17.
Craft Fair Feature Demonstrator
The Craft Fair Committee is seeking to feature a large-scale demonstration project at THE Christmas Craft Fair, one that would be ongoing throughout the four days of the first or second half of the Craft Fair. An example of such was the construction of a life-size papier mache mummer at last year's fair. As a constant in the demonstration booth it created extra interest and attracted return visits. NEW! 6) Important Announcements from the Clay Studio
The Clay Studio will be participating in the Heath and Wellness Show taking place at the Atlantic Physiotherapy & Wellness Centre in CBC. This show will take place from 10am-5pm, Saturday and Sunday, September 18-19, 2010. All proceeds made at the event will be given to the Arthritis Society. Drop by for a visit - there will be wheel demos and hand-building!

The San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, the first museum in the United States dedicated to quilts and textiles as an art form, welcomes exhibition proposals year-round from artists working in the fiber arts. 12) Call for Entry: Saul Bell Design Award Competition, New Mexico USA

Members of the jewellery-making or hollowware community and students of a jewellery or hollowware training program are invited to embrace the challenge and take part in the 11th Annual Saul Bell Design Award competition.
How to Enter
You may submit as many entries as you wish, although only one finalist per category will be awarded to a single designer.

13) Call for Applications: Anna Templeton Centre for Craft Art and Design Emerging Artist Program (EAP), St. John's (NL) Deadline: September 24, 2010
The objective of the Anna Templeton Centre's EAP is to better prepare recent graduates (June 2008 or later) to work in the craft and art sectors of Newfoundland and Labrador. Applications must be goal oriented and discuss how this program will help to achieve professional goals.
Goals may include:
An Exhibition: which could include an artist statement, catalogue, promotional and marketing material
A juried (through the Craft Council of NL) product line with marketing and promotional material for: Craft Council Craft Fairs; One-of-a-Kind Show (Toronto); Atlantic Craft Trade Show; Fashion Show
As well as creative and production work, successful applicants will be expected to carry out market research, work toward developing promotional and marketing strategy and business plan. Successful applicants are also required to submit a written final report complete with photos, marketing materials, etc.
The EAP will provide the artist with a monthly stipend of $600. There is a materials budget for the four month period of $400. If needed, successful applicants will be encourages to seek additional funding during the mentorship period and may be required to personally contribute financially. The craftsperson/artist will have regular consultations with a mentor assigned by the Anna Templeton Centre. The mentor will guide the craftsperson/artist toward the goals outlined in the application process. Equipment and working space will be negotiated with applicant and the ATC.
The EAP will cover a period of four consecutive months that must fall between October 1 and April 30.
Applications must include:
1) Description of what it is you want to do during your time in the program (500 words max)
2) A completed application for
3) Any support material you feel would better explain your proposal (photos, prototypes, etc.)

NEW! 15) Call for Nominations: Atlantic Canada Craft Awards of Excellence
Deadline: October 31, 2010
The Atlantic Canada Craft Awards of Excellence will once again be handed out in Halifax in February 2011, at a ceremony which coincides with the Atlantic Craft Trade Show.
Awards are given in four categories - Excellence in Product Design, Outstanding Exporter, Outstanding Retailer and Industry Leader/Supporter. These awards are the primary form of recognition in Atlantic Canada for leadership and excellence of professional craft and giftware producers and of those who are strong supporters of the craft industry. Through their demonstrated dedication and commitment, recipients are those who have achieved prominence in the community and credibility in the industry.
Anyone can nominate a craftsperson or retailer (for the retailer award). Please take a few moments and think about someone you know who has made an outstanding contribution to the craft industry in Atlantic Canada, and nominate them for one of this year's awards. The nomination forms are here.
Keep in mind that the deadline for receiving the nomination forms is October 31st, however, the complete nomination packages do not have to be submitted until November 30th.
For many years now most of our nominations have been coming from the provincial crafts councils and some government departments - which we appreciate immensely! It would be great to receive more nominations from industry partners, craftspeople and former award winners, in our communities.

This workshop will introduce participants to the skill of traditional rug hooking, once a practical function of everyday life in the province, and today enjoying a resounding come back as a form of art. The workshop will include a brief history of traditional rug hooking practices used in NL, outlining the styles, textures and patterns most predominately found. It will provide hands on and practical experience in creating or choosing a design and transferring it to burlap, deciding on colour, value and textures for the main image and background, and learning how to hook and refine the skill.

NEW! 20) American Craft Week - Crafting A Nation: October 1 - 10, 2010
Similiar to the Culture Days and Craft Year events in Canada, this year's American Craft Week celebration, will bring together individuals, small businesses and organizations from all fifty states in recognition of the countless ways handmade objects enrich our daily lives and contribute to our national aesthitic and economy. Running across the country from October 1 - 10, the event's main attraction is the "Crafting a Nation" conference. The conference will be held October 8 - 9, 2010 from 9am - 5pm in the Nan Tucker McEvoy Auditorium at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, located at 8th and F Streets N.W., in Washington, D.C.
The conference is FREE to attend, and while some of the speakers are scholars and museum specialists, the conversation format is designed to function as a forum, to encourage participation from the general public as well as those who make, collect and study handcrafted objects. The audience will be encouraged to participate in all of the discussions.

Janet Davis of Norton's Cove Studio and Alexis Templeton will be visiting each other's studios this September. Janet will be a guest at Alexis' studio on September 11th & 12th in St. John's. In turn Alexis will be returning the visit by showing her salt fish inspired pottery at Norton's Cove Studio two weekends later, on the 24th & 25th. THE SETUP: These sessions started up last winter. Easels and boards are available, as are work tables. Otherwise, bring your own materials.
By general agreement, oil paints, smelly-solvent media, and non-water-based spray fixatives are ordinarily not used in the room.
LOCATION: 4th Floor Rehearsal Room at the Arts and Culture Centre, Prince Philip Drive and Allandale Road.
TIME: Weekly, Tuesday mornings, 10:00 to 12 noon, continuing until 1:00pm if interest warrants and the model can stay.

The Thursday morning Group of 77 life drawing sessions have resumed.
THE SETUP: For those not familiar with this longstanding (30 years plus) cooperative arrangement, these are open studio sessions (no instruction) with a nude model. Easels and boards are available, as are work tables. Otherwise, bring your own materials.
By general agreement, oil paints, smelly-solvent media, and non-water-based spray fixatives are ordinarily not used in the room.

It's A French Feast - inspired by the traditional recipes of France.
Tickets are available now and are $30 per person. Purchase on-line, over the phone at 739-7623 or in person during office hours, Monday-Friday from 8:30am-4:30pm.

27) Knit Wit Cafe this Month
This month's Knit Wits cafe will be Sunday, September 26th from 7-9pm, at the Anna Templeton Centre, 278 Duckworth Street.
Bring
your current project, start something new or dig out those UFOs
(un-finished object)! Bring along your favourite books, magazines,
patterns or fibres for inspiration! Have a yarn you just don't know what
to do with? Bring it along and swap with others!
If you are new to knitting or have just always wanted to learn, come along...
We
will have a cup of tea (and treats if you like brownies), you can even
bring your own music for knittin' and purlin' and hookn' to!! Crocheters welcome too!
