NEW! 2) From the Clay Studio...Pottery Workshop with Neil Forrest
Date: Labour Day Weekend! Saturday September 4 from 9am-5pm with presentation in the evening, and Sunday, September 5 from 9am-4pm
Cost: $100 for Entire Weekend
Additional Info: lunch will be provided on the first day - please let us know of any dietary restrictions.

Join us at the Clay Studio for a two-day, fun-filled workshop hosted by NSCAD Ceramics professor Neil Forrest. This is a great learning opportunity as Forrest brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to our ceramics community.

In the lecture and workshop entitled "Ceramics & Landscape", ceramicist Neil Forrest will explore the historical and contemporary relation of landscape to ceramic art.

In his own work, Forrest builds 'synthetic colonies' sometimes involving hundreds of ceramics objects as well as large singular landscape forms. He considers his work in the tradition of architectural ornament, yet his forms are unattached to surfaces and instead creep along walls and floors.

The workshop will demonstrate modeling and molding that Forrest uses in his own work. The focus will be on hand forming techniques for large-scale construction and use of plaster molds. Information about stoneware clay bodies and oxidation glazing will be discussed.

Historian Simon Schama said "landscapes are constructs of the imagination projected onto wood, water and rock" and Forrest will show how landscape informed ceramics history and continues to be a vibrant part of ceramic art.

For more information or to register please email: claystudio@craftcouncil.nl.ca or call 753-2534.

8) Call for Entries: Potters Council 2011 Exhibition: "The Shoulders We Stand On", Tampa, Florida USA
Application Deadline: September 1, 2010
Once again, we celebrate the community of our council with a show of members' work in conjunction with NCECA 2011.

The 2011 Potters Council members show in Tampa, Florida will pay tribute to our roots, the significant influences that shape us and guide our work in clay.  We are creative heirs, standing on the shoulders of Giants.  We cannot help but reference and renew their ideas in our own work.  These distinctive inspirations become the touchstones of our best original efforts.

These muses are not always specific or singular.  Your inspiration might lie in the simple forms of an anonymous ancient potter. Perhaps you've been seduced from afar by the work of legendary potters. A teacher may have given you a unique point of view, personal guidance or new set of skills.

Your work for this particular exhibition may have a visual link to a particular culture or artist.  It might find its connection on a more philosophical level.  It must however, show both a clear source of inspiration and a truly original new direction.  We do not seek copies of our roots, but works, which honour them with fresh, innovative interpretations.

For information on how to submit to this show go to: http://ceramicartsdaily.org/potters-council/potters-council-members-only/potters-council-2011-juried-exhibition.
