Hi all,

Well these are the weeks that I don't envy Anne at all!  As some of you may be aware we have had a huge issue this week with our water shut off valves.  We had plumbers come in last week to fix a leak in the Clay Studio and it has turned out to be a much bigger job than anticipated as these things go.

Anne Manuel, our intrepid leader, along with our Admin Assistant Extraordinaire, Craig Joseph, have been very busy getting quotes and talking to City Hall. AND Anne has been bringing in water from her well this past week - that's right folks - we have no water in the building.

So, we are open for business - god bless all the understanding staff, especially in the Shop, but Clay Classes and Open Studios have had to be postponed.  Rochelle, our Clay Studio Coordinator, has said that folks can contact her on Thursday, July 29th for an update on the Schedule and has been busy contacting anybody already signed up for courses.

Anne has found somebody to do the job, and now we are waiting for the City's approval on our permit. Hydro and Bell Aliant have also been contacted.  It is a big job, but hopefully it will be fixed by the end of the week.  Fingers (and knees) crossed!

NEW! 1) A Day At The Beach!
Join us Saturday, August 14th at Middle Cove Beach on for the Eighth Annual Beach Firing Fundraiser.

The Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador's Clay Studio hosts an annual fundraising event. Local ceramicists have made beautiful clay objects which will be fired before your eyes at MIDDLE COVE BEACH using materials such as seaweed, sawdust and driftwood for fuel. Produced from this special type of firing are magnificent colours and textures. The pottery and sculpture is then sold on the beach in a 'market type' atmosphere. Prices range from $1-100. Don't miss this wonderful event on the beach! Pack a picnic and come along!

3) Craft Fair Applications Ready and in the Mail!
First of all, a big welcome to new Craft Fair Coordinators Lisa Pike (The Christmas Craft Fair) and Brenda Stratton (West Coast Craft Fair). You can contact Lisa at fair@craftcouncil.nl.ca and Brenda at brenda_stratton@hotmail.com and they will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Already they've been working hard with their committees putting together this years' Craft Fairs for St. John's and Steady Brook.

Applications are now ready and can be downloaded here along with other important information you need to know.

Deadline for applications is September 10th, 2010. You can choose to do one four-day show, or two four-day shows; the application form outlines the cost for each option. A 10% discount has been factored in for those choosing the eight-day option.


4) News from the Clay Studio
A BIG welcome to new Clay Studio Coordinator Rochelle Young.  She has taken charge of Clay Studio duties from Erin and Mike and has been getting used to the new terrain.

Special thanks to Erin and Mike for all their hard work in keeping the Studio open to the public for the last few months!

There is space available in the front private studio.  It is a shared space for three and currently has two tenants.  The cost is $150 per month including key rental.  A lovely spot to work for sure.

The Annual Members Exhibit is the Craft Gallery's largest and most diverse event. The Juror's Choice Award is always a surprise.

NEW! 6) Call for Submissions: Hydro and Rail Corridor Multi-use Trails Project, City of Toronto, Toronto (ON)
Deadline Date: Friday, August 13, 2010 by 4pm

In July 2009 the City of Toronto's Transportation Services was awarded funding through the Recreation Infrastructure Canada Program in Ontario (RInC) and the Ontario Recreation Program (Ontario REC) to develop seven multi-use off-road trails to be located at hydro and former rail corridors. The Gatineau Hydro Corridor runs approximately from Hwy 401 southwest to Eglinton and Victoria Park avenues while the Finch Hydro Corridor runs across North York to Scarborough. The trail along the old CN Leaside Rail Corridor will link Eglinton to York Mills while another trail will follow the old Scarborough Pit Spur Rail Corridor. To be completed by March 2011, the infrastructure project adds approximately 30 kilometres of new and 4 kilometres of upgraded off-road bike and multi-use trails to the City of Toronto's Bikeway Network and represents the largest expansion of the City's trail system in some time.

This project provides a public art opportunity for the commissioning of artistically designed bicycle stands (lock-ups). Based on the standard structural post-and-ring bicycle stand, the elaborated design or designs by one artist will be chosen and manufactured as multiples. These will be installed for bicycle parking within the trails' numerous recreational nodes that include landscaping, benches, garbage receptacles and pedestrian-scale lighting, at key crossroad locations.

Based on the City of Toronto's 1% policy for public art on capital projects, the budget of $180,000 includes fees and fabrication. Fabrication of the artistically designed bike stands is to be competed by Friday, 4 March 2011. Other costs, such as site preparation, below grade work and installation, have been removed from the responsibility of the artist.

The public art design concept will be selected through a two stage open competition by a specially convened independent Selection Committee made up of practicing arts professionals and community representatives.

Submissions by email are not accepted.

Eastern Edge Gallery is gearing up for the fun Marathon Festival events and is now looking for participants for the Fancy Artist Talks. First come first served basis.

Please let us know if you would be interested in giving a short 15-20 minute talk about your work during this event. You get paid a modest fee.

It is a casual evening where 6-8 artists speak about their work and a Fancy Drink is designed and named in their honor by our Fancy Drink specialist Monique Tobin. (Speakers get 1 free!)

NEW! 10) Job Opportunity: Alberta College of Art and Design (ACAD), Fibre Arts Faculty, Calgary (AB)
Deadline: September 30, 2010

ACAD is seeking Sessional Fibre Faculty to teach courses in the 2011 Winter Semester. There is the potential for a full time course load for at least one semester. This is a great opportunity to teach in one of Canada's most dynamic Fibre Programs.

The successful candidates must have an MFA or equivalent combination of experience/qualification, an active studio practice and/or substantial professional practice, and post-secondary teaching experience. It is preferred that the candidates have experience in one or more of the following areas: introductory and intermediate screen printing, textile design at the 2nd year level, intermediate mixed media (3-D), a seminar/studio at the 4th year level, and 1st year introductory fibre (2-D) which might include a selection of the following processes: fabric construction, embroidery, papermaking, screen printing, felting, shibori and fabric dying.  As well, candidates must have a good knowledge of contemporary fibre practice and be familiar with current art and craft theory.

NEW! 11) Call for Submissions: A1C Gallery Residency Program, A1C Gallery, St. John's (NL)
Deadline: October 1, 2010

The A1C Gallery will be hosting a month long residency in January 2011 followed by a month long solo exhibition in February 2011.

"Through the residency we aim to encourage discovery and cultivation of new ideas, provide career-building opportunities for emerging artists, and promote engagement with the local community through the arts."

The Winter Residency provides:
A opportunity to turn the gallery space into your studio for one month. A one month solo exhibition at the A1C Gallery located in downtown St. John's.  There will be CARFAC fees allotted.

No accommodation is formally provided but we can recommend a number of affordable places within the vicinity and may be able to provide lodgings with members.

Eligibility:
This program is designed for practicing artists. Admission to residency is based upon submitted proposals with supporting material reviewed by the Board of Directors of the A1C Gallery. The residency is available to individuals and collaborative group.

Submit:
Cover letter explaining your interest in the residency; Artist statement (max 250 words); CD with up to 10 digital images (jpgs 200 dpi max) and supporting material in relevant media; Applications are currently taken on an on-going basis.

NEW! 12) Heritage Canada Foundation 2010 Conference Bursary
The Association of Heritage Industries Newfoundland and Labrador is pleased to offer a bursary program to assist individuals and organizations in Newfoundland and Labrador in attending the 2010 Heritage Canada Foundation Conference "REVITALIZE! Economic Renewal. Quality of Life. Heritage Buildings." being held in St. John's from Sept 30 - October 2, 2010. The bursary is open to all residents of Newfoundland and Labrador who are active as an employee or volunteer in a heritage organization, industry development organization, or municipality.

The bursary program will pay for one full early bird conference registration fee. It will also provide a maximum of $200 for travel and accommodation expenses; residents of Labrador are eligible for a maximum of $500 for travel and accommodation expenses.

17) Visual Artists Newfoundland and Labrador (VANL), Workshops at Art Ex, Grand Falls (NL)

About Art Ex

Art Ex 2010 is the inaugural year for an annual visual arts event, which will take place in the Exploits Valley region of central Newfoundland from August 6-8. The three day celebration of visual art will include activities such as youth and adult workshops, panel discussions, talks, interactive art interventions, public artworks and collaborative community based art events. The activities will occur concurrently in a number of municipalities within the region: incorporating both Grand Falls-Windsor, as well as more remote, rural locations to the north-east (Leading Tickles, Norris Arm) and south-west (Millertown, Buchans).

This year's event will feature an Art Ex launch party with special guest speakers and entertainment, as well as several workshops and demonstrations with local artists and craftspersons from around the region. Art Historian, Dr. Gerard Curtis, will give an entertaining and informative talk on the history and theory of art.

NEW! 18) Exhibition, Pareidolia by Ruth Marsh, A1C Gallery, St. John's (NL)
Dates: July 24 - August 28, 2010

Pareidolia: From Ancient Greek para (amiss, wrong)+eid?lon, the tendency to interpret a vague stimulus as something known to the viewer, such as seeing shapes in clouds?

The word Pareidolia plays a dual role in this visual narrative.  As a phenomenon equally applicable to cloud castles as oil spills, it seemed fitting that it take on, in its forma nd content, elelment of both.  It is meant to reflect a visual phenomenon first but also a place, an imagined garden.

In Pareidolia we see a world of wholesale fecundity, a coexistence of growth and death and an overwhelming, even menacing potential for life. Since this series began and developed under a real time deluge of news reports about oil in the Gulf of Mexico, it was inevitable that it became a garden grown in amorphous form against backgrounds of black ichor.  The dual nature of life and death is easily equated with this lifeblood of ancient gods, made poisonous to the touch of mortal creatures.  The awkward combination of these elements is intended to suggest that our collective desires not only have size and weight but, in some cases, may be measure by the litre.

About the Artist
Ruth Marsh is a painter currently based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She received a BFA from NSCAD University where she studied painting, drawing and art history.

NEW! 19) Eastern Edge Gallery, Tree Cozy Bee with Heidi Wagner, St. John's (NL)
Date: August 15, 2010 from 12-1pm
Location: 72 Harbour Drive in the Harbourside Studio space

Ever wonder why no one pampers the trees in Bannerman Park?  Well now YOU can!

Heidi Wagner will be doing a Tree Cozy making demo at Eastern Edge Gallery.  What is a Tree Cozy? Well it's a cozy that goes on a tree not a teapot!

Bring any materials you would like to work with - cloth, thread, wool, found materials and sewing stuff like good scissors, rulers, etc.  Oh and bring your creativity!

If you haven't made a cozy before, a rectangle measuring 4'x6' and smaller works for our Tree Cozy installation (similar to the shape of a scarf only bigger).

For this project we are looking for pieces made of wool, cotton, or any other textiles as well as non-textile material (ie plastic bags) just as long at the finished product can be wrapped and secured around a tree. Cozies are traditionally knitted or crocheted or sewn, but the installation is open to other creative techniques. It will be installed for a month, so the materials you use must be somewhat weather withstanding.

Installations of the cozies will be done daily from 1-2pm, August 14-21 in Bannerman Park.

Donations of materials would be greatly appreciated and can be dropped off at the gallery.  Curated by Heidi Wagner.

20) Exhibition, Parks Canada Discovery Centre, Nocturne by Christine Koch, Woody Point (NL)
Dates: Show runs until Thanksgiving weekend

This summer, Christine Koch will be showing a new body of paintings about Gros Morne National Park at Parks Canada's Discovery Centre in Woody Point in western Newfoundland.  Nocturne will be up from July through September, 2010. For those who will not have an opportunity to see it at Gros Morne, the work will be posted on Christine's website later this summer.

NEW! 23) Lots of Congratulations to our Community!
1) A big CONGRATS to Kelly Davis, our newsletter designer, on the birth of her son Magnus!

2) Congratulations to member Audrey Feltham, owner of Atelier West Studios.  She entered the Ottawa School of Art International Print Exhibition this past April.  Her print Beetlemania II was awarded a purchase award and is now in the permanent collection in the Ottawa School of Art.  You can view the work on her website at www.atelierwest.ca.

3) "Yay"! to Brenda Stratton who is now the new Craft Development Specialist for the Island taking over for Pete Barrett who has recently retired!  Brenda is already planning her move to Central Newfoundland.

4) And finally, congratulations on good work goes to Bonnie Johnstone.  Trine Schiolden passed this along and I thought you all wwhale by Bonnie Johnstone in her yardould like to take a peek as well.

Here is what Trine wrote:
"Attached is a picture that my husband took of the felt whale the Bonnie Johnstone has made.  It hangs in her woods in Witless Bay. It is VERY large.

There is a tradition of "felt in nature" - there have been several exhibitions in Europe. Sometimes the felt is left in situ in nature, to slowly decay. Not sure if Bonnie intends to do that. It is such a strong piece, and evokes love and knowledge of place. It also fits in the landscape so beautifully, and that too, is an art. It's a real celebration of love of place, I think."

Andrew Hennessey is constructing fishing flies out of historic materials, and will be donating these flies to families who had members in the Royal Newfoundland Regiment.  He would like somebody to encase them in acrylic (or maybe glass if light enough), so they could be used as a paperweight or just set out as an ornament.  If interested contact Andrew at 709-237-0244.
