Happy Canada Day! Hope you all enjoy a lovely day BBQ'ing, gardening, watching the fireworks, or whatever you have planned for the day off.
There has been lots happening this past week and lots coming up. The Opening Reception of our 14th Annual Members Exhibit took place this past weekend. Congratulations to everybody who has work in the show - it is a truly wonderful show. We had over 140 entries this year and it was really difficult for the Gallery Committee to decide what was to go in. If you didn't make the Opening, there are pictures now on-line at http://www.flickr.com/photos/craftcouncilnl/.
We also announced the winners of the Awards of Excellence at the Opening. Congrats to all the recipients - they are as follows...
The Award for Innovation and Design is awarded to the craft maker whose work best demonstrates a sensitive use of materials and an innovative approach to the application of design principles. Winner is Soft Crystalline Vase by Alexis Templeton. This 6" high vase features a green crystalline glaze on porcelain clay. The Craft Council extends sincere appreciation for support to Innovation and Design Award sponsor Johnny Ruth.
The West Award for Personal Expression is awarded to the craft maker whose work best illustrates a personal and individual expression of thought and experience. Winner is Winter Warms to Spring by Jessica Butler. Jessica's necklace is made from a mixture of metals, stones and other materials.
The Jurors' Choice Award is selected from the Annual Members' Exhibit for an outstanding piece of work which excels in design, technique, colour, humour, use of material or interpretation of tradition. Winner is Inheritance by Marjorie Colman-Sadd. This double sided quit make sure of the bargello technique of variable column width to give an impression of curvature.
These works are part of the Annual Members' Exhibit of the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador and will be on display at the Craft Council Gallery until August 15, 2010.
Thank you to the Awards Committee and to Executive Director, Anne Manuel for all their hard work to make sure these awards are available to our members. Good job!

August 6, 2010, through online nomination forms which can be found on the website at http://www.tiac.travel/
On May 31, 2010 the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) launched the nomination process for the National Awards for Tourism Excellence. This year, there is a new award on the list: the National Cultural Tourism Award.
Background The National Awards for Tourism Excellence, presented annually by The Globe and Mail, were created in 2003 by TIAC. The awards allow Canada's tourism industry to recognize those people, places, organizations and events that have gone above and beyond to offer a superior tourism experience to travelers in Canada. Fourteen awards will be handed out this year.
Nominations Information on the nomination process and the criteria for each award are available on the TIAC Web site (http://www.tiac.travel/), including the criteria for the National Cultural Tourism Award, which were developed in partnership with TIAC and the FPTTI Management Committee.
Please take a few minutes to submit a nomination and share this information about the National Cultural Tourism Award with your colleagues and stakeholders in the culture and tourism sectors.
Considerations The addition of a cultural tourism award to TIAC's National Awards for Tourism Excellence helps promote the long term strategic importance of culture for the economic stability and vitality of the tourism industry and strengthen networks and partnerships between Canada's culture and tourism stakeholders for their mutual benefit.
The award also helps showcase the FPTTI nationally, leading up to the meeting of the FPT Ministers Responsible for Culture and Heritage, slated for August 12, 2010, in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.
