June 23, 2010

Helloooo Sandals!

What a nice day indeed in St. John's.  I certainly hope the rest of the province is sharing in this lovely sunshine!

The big news this week is...(drum roll please)...

It's the OPENING RECEPTION of our ANNUAL MEMBERS EXHIBIT!

We actually did the math and it looks like the Craft Council has been putting together our little Members Exhibit for 14 years now and it just keeps getting better and better.  I can't say for sure, but I think there was a record number of entries this year and Sharon, Diane and the Committee have put together a terrific exhibit.

So come out this weekend on Saturday, JUNE 26th from 2-4pm! The show continues throughout the summer from June 26 - August 15, 2010

Everybody is welcome and as usual light refreshments will be served.

Tell everybody you know!

NEW! 4) Culture Days: Register Your Event Online! (NL)
http://culturedays.ca/en/celebration-schedule/by-region/newfoundland-and-labrador

As of last week, activity organizers may now register and publish their activity listings to the Celebration Schedule on the Culture Days site directly. If you haven't picked a venue for your Culture Days activity yet, try checking out the Celebration Schedule first, to see where existing activities are taking place in your area. You may want to help concentrate new activities within walking distance of other existing activities to create activity "hubs." You are likely to attract more people if they know they can browse and sample a variety of drop-in activities all in one easily-accessible area.

Updates made to published activity listings are also updated on the website immediately upon saving. This is called dynamic publishing - updates happen as soon as your information is submitted. As well, basic search capabilities are now available to help users navigate the Celebration Schedule.

Culture Days will occur in Newfoundland and Labrador from September 24-26th 2010. All cultural activities which are free to the public are eligible for inclusion in the celebration.

Grants, Awards, and Funding

NEW! 9) National Cultural Tourism Award, St. John's (NL)
Nominations will be accepted until August 6, 2010, through online nomination forms which can be found on the website at http://www.tiac.travel/

On May 31, 2010 the Tourism Industry Association of Canada (TIAC) launched the nomination process for the National Awards for Tourism Excellence. This year, there is a new award on the list: the National Cultural Tourism Award.

Background
The National Awards for Tourism Excellence, presented annually by The Globe and Mail, were created in 2003 by TIAC. The awards allow Canada's tourism industry to recognize those people, places, organizations and events that have gone above and beyond to offer a superior tourism experience to travelers in Canada. Fourteen awards will be handed out this year.

Nominations
Information on the nomination process and the criteria for each award are available on the TIAC Web site (http://www.tiac.travel/), including the criteria for the National Cultural Tourism Award, which were developed in partnership with TIAC and the FPTTI Management Committee.

Please take a few minutes to submit a nomination and share this information about the National Cultural Tourism Award with your colleagues and stakeholders in the culture and tourism sectors.

Considerations
The addition of a cultural tourism award to TIAC's National Awards for Tourism Excellence helps promote the long term strategic importance of culture for the economic stability and vitality of the tourism industry and strengthen networks and partnerships between Canada's culture and tourism stakeholders for their mutual benefit.

The award also helps showcase the FPTTI nationally, leading up to the meeting of the FPT Ministers Responsible for Culture and Heritage, slated for August 12, 2010, in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.

If you have any questions or comments regarding the award, please feel free to contact the FPTTI Secretariat at fptti@pch.gc.ca.

Instructors: Visiting artists, Rhonda Neufeld and Rodney Konopaki
Cost: $90 ($75 each when more than one member of a household participates)
Where: St. Michael's Printshop, 72 Harbour Drive

This workshop, lead by two experienced teachers and artists, is an excellent introduction to etching, and offers a refresher for experienced printmakers. In the second technique participants will experiment with texture and collage by pressing a variety of materials into soft ground.

Workshop participants should bring:
-        Ideas for images
-        Hard pencils, crayons, pastels (other dry drawing materials)
-        Flat, hard, thin materials that have texture and can be run through an etching press (e.g. leaves, string, corrugated cardboard, fabric, burlap, paper, etc).  Use your imagination!
-        Inks, paper, printing plates etc provided

Participants will have an opportunity to finish printing plates the Saturday following the workshop.

Rodney Konopaki is an assistant professor in Emily Carr University of Art and Design's Print Media Department. Rhonda Neufeld is a printmaker with work in the Canada Council Art Bank. The couple is working on a collaborative edition, which they began at a residency in the Banff Centre.

NEW! 17) Member News Connects Member to Customer
In September 2009 we were asked to put out a call to woodworkers to carve a tree and a backyard.  As a result, the owners of the tree were able to make an arrangement with member Vince Jones which ended up with a very happy customer.

The customer wrote in recently:
"Vince was a pleasure to work with from first meeting to last clean-up and we would recommend the project to anyone who has a tree they cannon bear to completely part with."

With permission of the customer, I am able to show you Vince some before and after pics.
