Well it's nice to complain about being warm for a change! I imagine all of you are putting the finishing touches on your summers orders these days. Summer seems to finally be here.
We've been doing a bit of spring cleaning around here and and we have a laburnum in our parking lot that has died. If you are looking for some wood it's yours. Contact Anne Manuel at amanuel@craftcouncil.nl.ca for more information.
And, as you are aware, we have changed the format of the Member News and are now ready to update the email list of current Craft Council Members. If you want to continue receiving these weekly emails, our bi-monthly newsletter and the applications (including the Craft Fair) you will need to make sure your Membership payment is up-to-date. NEW! 3) Employment Opportunity - Studio Assistant, Norton's Cove Studio, Wesleyville (NL) Deadline: June 14, 2010
With assistance from the Canada Summer Jobs Program, Norton's Cove Studio is now accepting applications for one position:
Studio Assistant This position is for 8 weeks at 30 hours/week, $10/hour the student will be involved in all daily studio activities: assisting with printing copper etching and lino-cut relief prints; cutomer service; special events; art classes & workshops; regular studio maintenance; giving tours of historic structure. Students of an art program such as Textile Studies, Fine Arts, Art Education, etc., will be preferred.
To be eligible to participate in Canada Summer Jobs, individuals must: ·be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment; ·have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year; ·be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act6; and ·be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations. Resumes with a cover letter stating the reasons you would like to work at Norton's Cove Studio are being accepted in person, by email, fax, or by regular mail until June 14th.

NEW! 4) Residency Opportunities: Fogo Island Arts Corporation, Fogo Island (NL) Deadline: July 31 2010
Visual artists, curators and filmmakers can apply for residencies on Fogo Island in 2011. Residencies are 3 - 6 months. Visiting artists/curators/filmmakers are provided with a studio and a house to live in.
Artists/curators/filmmakers selected to the program can apply for stipend to cover material and living costs on the island and for travel (to and from Fogo Island only). Production funding can also be applied for during residency on the island.
Deadline for applications is once a year, for residencies in 2011 (February onwards) the deadline is July 31 2010 (post stamp date).
A list of artists/curators/filmmakers selected to for the program will be published on our website approximately six weeks after deadline for applications.

NEW! 6) The Rooms Provincial Art Bank Jury Nominations 2010 Deadline for Nominations: July 30, 2010
The Art Bank Advisory Committee is contacting arts organizations, art galleries and individuals in the province to invite nominations for the 2010 Provincial Art Bank Program Jury.
The Art Bank Program is administered by The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery. In selecting artwork for purchase, we are requesting nominations of individuals from the 5 regions of the Province;
- 1 representative from the Avalon Region - 1 representative from the Central Region - 1 representative from the Eastern Region - 1 representative from Labrador - 1 representative from the Western Region
Jury nominations can be submitted by artists, individuals in the cultural sector, and the public at large. Individuals can put their own names forward. The Art Bank Advisory Committee will select Jury members from these nominations.
Those nominated should be available on October 18th, 19th and 20th, 2010 for deliberation at The Rooms, in St. John's. Jury members will be compensated with professional fees. The Rooms will make arrangements for jury travel and accommodations.
No work by Jury members or their immediate family will be considered for purchase.
All nominations for the 2010 Art Bank Jury should be dropped off or submitted by Friday, July 30th, 2010 to:

7) Call for Submissions: Exhibition Opportunity: TALENTE Deadline for Submissions: October 1, 2010
TALENTE, the international competition for young artists, craftsmen, makers, designers and technicians, seeks candidates from the crafts, from arts academies, and from the sphere of science and technology.
The chosen works will be shown on the International Trade Fair for the Skilled Trades in Munich from 16th to 22nd March 2011. The age limit for designers is 33 years of age, and the closing date is the 1st October 2010.

8) Call for Entry: Menorah Deadline: October 25, 2010, 6pm Pacific Time
The Burquest Jewish Community Association in Coquitlam, BC, seeks applicants for their Chanukah Menorah Design Competition & Auction. Artists from all communities are welcome to submit artwork that interprets the meaning of Chanukah and the menorah design.

9) Next INTRD Product Review Meeting, St. John's (NL) Just a reminder that the next INTRD Product Review meeting will be held on June 10, 2010. If you are planning to submit products for review please complete the form and submit to Karen Thistle as soon as possible.
Craft producers intending to access the Craft Industry Development Program (funding), or any of INTRD's marketing activities (Crafts of Character Brand/Website, Wholesale Marketing - Trade Shows, Wholesale Guide, etc.) must submit their products to Product Review first if they haven't already done so. Please remember that INTRD's Product Review process is not the same as the Craft Council jury process and one does not substitute for the other.
This will be the last Product Review session until September.
10) Call for Entry: RCMP Veterans Association Convention There is a special "Call for Entry" from the RCMP Veterans Association Convention. They are looking for 16 Exhibitors to sell their products at their convention "Soiree 2011". They expect to have 500-600 delegates at the Sheraton Hotel. The tables are to be set up near the front entrance of the Hotel near the Registration area. Tables are to be rented for $50.

11) Winners Announced for 2010 EVA Awards A BIG congratulations to all the nominees and winners of this years EVA Awards, which took place this past Friday. Craft Council Members Tara Bryan, Michael Flaherty, Jason Holley and Luben Boykov were all up for awards. Tara Bryan won The Long Haul Award; Luben Boykov received the Large Year Award which Micheal Flaherty was nominated for as well. Jason Holley was nominated for Emerging Artist and this was won by Jason Penney. The Kippy Goins Award was granted to Jeanette Laaning.

NEW! 13) Professional Development Seminar On-Line
Pricing remains one of the most thorny aspects for any artist or crafts person.
SNAG's (Society of North American Goldsmiths) recent Professional Development Seminar spent over two hours discussing just this issue to a standing-room only crowd of 350 people. If you are seeking a pricing strategy, listen to the SlideShare presentation with audio from our four speakers' presentations titled, "Not Just Another Pricing Presentation: A Dialog About Pricing Your Work." Then listen to the 55 minute Q & A with our speakers and the audience. The discussion was lively and informative. Over 1,200 artists have listened to these online presentations so far.

14) Summer Classes: The College of Craft & Design, Fredericton (NB)
The College of Craft and Design is founding and Principal Partner with the City of Fredericton in edVentures, the award-winning summer program of culture, art and craft workshops. 130 are scheduled for the upcoming 2010 season, starting July 5, with many delivered by College instructors in campus studios and classrooms. NEW! 17) Christine Koch Studio: Open Studio, St. John's (NL) Dates: June 12-13, 2010 from 11am-5:30pm
Christine Koch has a new body of work which is going to be exhibited in the Parks Canada Discovery Centre in Gros Morne this summer, and she would like to show it to those interested in St. John's before shipping it across the island. This series of paintings on panels, titled Nocturne, features the landscapes of the Park at night.
The studio will be open Saturday and Sunday, June 12 and 13, from 11 am until 5:30 pm at 177 Water Street, top floor.
Please share this announcement with anyone else who may be interested.
The work can be seen in the Discovery Centre, Woody Point, from the end of June through September.

Bruce Montcombroux Palanquin Park Palaquin Park is about a searching for a place called home, while inventing maps that explore beyond geography to the possible intersection of place and belonging.

19) Alexis Templeton Studio - Icebergs in June June is often when icebergs arrive on our shores- if they're going to come at all, of course. Deer Lake based visual artist Audrey Feltham recently returned from England where she spent a month studying the textile manipulation technique devore (relief texture) with international fabric artist Dionne Swift.
Audrey received a grant through the NLAC's Professional Project Grants Program and is this month's "Featured Projects" on the NLAC website

23) Artist in Residence Looking For Visitors If anyone has time/interested in taking a trip out to Terra Nova Park drop by and visit Artist in Residence Suzen Green.
About 200 metres from the Trans Canada Highway in Terra Nova National Park, artist Suzen Green is working the woods in yarn. Green, a Newfoundland-born visual artist presently based in Montreal, Quebec, is the most recent artist-in-residence through The Rooms in Terra Nova National Park. Living in a cabin located beside the Warden's Office, Green is making art about the Terra Nova landscape, local CBC Radio and personal memories growing up in Eastern Newfoundland. Hooking rugs about moose encounters, knitting socks to root a person in place and photographing the absurdity of a city girl caught in the woods, Green is responding to the Terra Nova experience through humour, needles and yarn.
Suzen Green is the Artist-in-Residence in Terra Nova National Park from May 24 - June 18, 2010. For more information about Art in the Park contact park staff at (709) 533-2801.
Suzen Green is a Newfoundland-born visual artist based out of Montreal, QC where she is currently completing an MFA in Fibres at Concordia University. Primarily a textile artist, Green works with traditional textile techniques in sculptural and performative contexts.
