Job Opportunity!
The Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador requires a part-time Clay Studio Coordinator for the overall operation of its Clay Studio in St. John's. Deadline:June 7, 2010 by 5pm
Energy, enthusiasm for Clay Arts and excellent time management skills are essential for this position. Under direction of the Craft Council Clay Committee, the Clay Studio Coordinators' duties shall include: - Technical clay studio operations including: kiln and glaze kitchen operation, equipment maintenance and responsibility for performing/organizing studio cleaning.
- Coordinating open studio sessions; workshops and classes
- Marketing these and other promotional activities to the broader craft community and the general public under the direction of the Clay Committee.
- Other duties as required.
The Craft Council clay studio operation is assisted by a diverse group of volunteers whom the Coordinator will work alongside. The ability to interact positively within a teamwork environment is paramount to success in our organization.

1) Invitation to Members: Craft Alliance Conference Reception, St. John's (NL) Date: Tuesday, June 8, 2010 from 5:00pm
Over the past 32 years, the four Atlantic provincial governments
have been working together to assist the craft industry in Atlantic
Canada. The Atlantic Craft
Trade Show (ACTS) has been the main trade activity for this purpose.
Over the past 3 years the government partners involved in producing
ACTS have been working on a new organizational model to more effectively
involve and engage the craft industry in our region.
As a result, a new trade association has been formed to further
develop the Atlantic Craft Trade Show and begin the process of
government and industry partners working together on a pan-Atlantic
basis for the benefit of all craft related organizations in Atlantic
Canada.
2010 Conference, June 7-9 The Craft Alliance will be holding a conference in St. John's, NL from June 7-9, 2010. The Craft Council will be holding a reception for delegates and Craft Council members on Tuesday, June 8, 2010 from 5pm at the Devon House Craft Centre. If you have participated in or are interested in going to ACTS this is a good time to come and ask questions. Or, if you just have an interest in the Craft Alliance and would like to meet other people involved in the Craft Industry please join us as well.

FOR INTEREST for inclusion in the Craft Council Gallery presentation to
City of St. John's Art Procurement Deadline: May 31, 2010
Each year the City of St.
John's and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador purchase works of
fine art and fine craft for their permanent collections. In the past
the Craft Council has installed work from past and current shows in the
Gallery for presentation to the City and Provincial Juries. Now all
procurement is done through digital submissions, and both the Gallery
and individual artists and craftspeople can make submissions.
Any
works currently held by the Gallery could be selected for the Craft
Council Gallery's application - the permission of the artist will be
obtained. If you have work in the Gallery which you wish to submit in
your personal application, please notify the Gallery.
Current call for interest for inclusion in
the Craft Council Gallery presentation to City of St. John's Art
Procurement - deadline is May 31.
If
you have works still available for purchase that were in past exhibits
and you would like the gallery to submit on your behalf, please let us
know by MAY 13. Please note, only a small selection of works will be
considered for submission by the Gallery so we cannot guarantee all
works will be included.
If you would like the Gallery to consider
your work for submission to future Art Procurement deadlines, please
send an email to gallery@craftcouncil.nl.ca indicating this interest and
we will contact you for further details. Purchases made through the
Craft Council help to support the continuation of Gallery programming.

The Clay Committee is a volunteer group which oversees the operations of the Devon House Clay Studio, sets directions, and supervises the Studio Coordinator. We meet once a month and carry out tasks as needed between meetings.
We are a positive, dynamic group of people who are passionate about clay, and about the possibilities of what this Studio has to offer.
We currently have positions opening for: - a chair - a treasurer - a representative to the Craft Council - members at large.

NEW! 4) Next INTRD Product Review Meeting, St. John's (NL) Just a reminder that the next INTRD Product Review meeting will be held on June 10, 2010. If you are planning to submit products for review please complete the form and submit to Karen Thistle as soon as possible.
Craft producers intending to access the Craft Industry Development Program (funding), or any of INTRD's marketing activities (Crafts of Character Brand/Website, Wholesale Marketing - Trade Shows, Wholesale Guide, etc.) must submit their products to Product Review first if they haven't already done so. Please remember that INTRD's Product Review process is not the same as the Craft Council jury process and one does not substitute for the other.
This will be the last Product Review session until September.
NEW! 5) Call for Submissions: Outdoor Sculpture Garden, The Oeno Gallery, Bloomfield (ON) Deadline Date: Thursday, July 15, 2010
The Oeno Gallery is in the process of building an outdoor sculpture garden of approximately five acres in size and seeking proposals from arts for sculpture.
The garden will have extensive walking paths; a large spring fed stone quarry, several distinct seating areas, a wildflower field, perennial plantings, groves of various native tree species, a large hill, and specific sites suitable for sculpture of various sizes.
Proposals will be reviewed by the Gallery, and specific works will be selected by a jury consisting of the curator, assistant curator, and two senior sculptures, Works must be original, moder, durable in all seasons, and safely available for viewing by the public in an unsupervised area. Work must also be available for sale to the public or to corporate clients. No electricity is available on the site. Power requirements, if any must be designed with independent solo sources.
Interested artists should send their proposals electronically.
Deadline: Interested artists should submit their proposals by July 15, 2010. Accepted proposals must be ready for installation April 15-30, 2011, and must be on display for a minimum of one year. Installations will change annually during the month of April thereafter.

Eastern Edge Gallery is looking for exciting, engaging contemporary artists! Consider this your invitation to the 2010 Festival!
THE FESTIVAL For ten years, Eastern Edge Gallery has organized an annual summer arts festival, the 24 Hour Art Marathon. The 24 Hour Art Marathon Festival celebrates all contemporary forms of artistic disciplines with a variety of activities: performance art, spoken work, video, contemporary music, artist talks, workshops, screenings, an outdoor soap-box stage as well as the marathon event; 24 hours creative madness.
WHY WE ARE DIFFERENT We include artists of all ages and experience, providing opportunities for younger artists to interact with more experienced artists and access a wide range of artistic expression. We're highly participatory with an eye to develop young artists and audiences while celebrating achievement in contemporary art.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR Artists are encouraged to propose a variety of contemporary art actions from small to big which could include: performances; local community collaboration; video/sound/off-site installation; workshops (for all ages or specific)
The festival committee will review all proposals and may contact artists for further information and planning. Eastern Edge is dedicated to paying artists professional fees.

7) Call for Submissions: 2010-2011 Artist in Residency, Harcourt House Arts Centre, Edmonton (AB) Deadline Date: Monday, May 31, 2010
Harcourt House Arts Centre is currently accepting submissions for our 2010/2011 Artist in Residence (AIR). Awarded to artists annually through a peer jury selection process, this program is committed to providing an emerging artist with a year-long, dedicated studio environment at Harcourt House Arts Centre to research, develop and exhibit new work. This program allows for the Artist in Residence to engage and interact with the local visual arts community, encouraging shared ideas, expression and discourse.
This one-year residency includes a studio space, access to our art education courses and facilities, teaching opportunities and a $150 monthly art supply stipend. The AIR will be given a solo exhibition in the centre's Main Gallery at the end of the one-year term to conclude their residency. The AIR will receive CAR/FAC fees for the presentation of this final exhibition.
We invite artists who are Canadian residents to submit a proposal before May 31, 2010. All disciplines are encouraged to apply. Applicants will be selected by the quality of work submitted, their demonstration of commitment to serious practice and how the residency will meet their objectives at this crucial juncture in the development of their practice.

8) Call for Applications: ACRE Orlando Trade Show, Florida (USA)
ACRE Orlando is a new wholesale craft trade show to take place in Orlando, Florida from January 22-24, 2011. This show is hosted by WholesaleCrafts.com, which also produces the annual craft trade show based in Las Vegas.
Craft Alliance is consideration a project to assist Atlantic Canadian craft producers to attend the trade show in Orlando, for next January. The ACRE shows are a juried show and all potential participants would have to go through the ACRE show jury process.
This email is to gauge interest by Atlantic craft producers in attending the trade show. Participants should be export ready craft producers from Atlantic Canada. If we get enough interest in the trade show, Craft Alliance would approach government funding agencies to seek assistance with the project.

10) Call for Entry: RCMP Veterans Association Convention There is a special "Call for Entry" from the RCMP Veterans Association Convention. They are looking for 16 Exhibitors to sell their products at their convention "Soiree 2011". They expect to have 500-600 delegates at the Sheraton Hotel. The tables are to be set up near the front entrance of the Hotel near the Registration area. Tables are to be rented for $50.

This program awards art institutions and artist-run centres up to $7,500 in project grants for visual-arts youth education.
The Youth Arts Bursary has supported arts education in Winnipeg, Lethbridge, Dawson City, Windsor, Ottawa, Halifax, Toronto, Vancouver and Kamloops. Recent recipients include the Southern Alberta Art Gallery for a program in community narrative; the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture for an expansion of its Youth Art Enrichment program; and Art City for a St. James Town program on play in the arts. The NICHE Awards program began in 1989 to celebrate excellence and innovation in American and Canadian fine craft. Artists are recognized in professional and student divisions.

15) Call for Applications: 2011 Saidye Bronfman Awards Application Deadline: June 1, 2010
The Saidye Bronfman Award is Canada's foremost distinction for excellence in the fine crafts. "Fine Craft" is the term used to define an area of activity in the crafts that is frequently directed towards exhibition and/or sale in a gallery-like setting. This activity involves high levels of technical expertise as well as knowledge of the historical tradition and development of the craft. Through their work, fine crafts practitioners demonstrate new concepts and innovations that expand the boundaries of the medium and its techniques.
In addition, works by the recipient are acquired by the Canadian Museum of Civilization for its permanent collection. Nominees must be professional artists who have created an outstanding body of work, made a substantial contribution to the development of fine crafts in Canada and have been exhibited nationally and internationally. The Canada Council defines a professional artist as someone who has specialized training in the field (not necessarily in academic institutions), who is recognized as such by her or his peers (artists working in the same artistic tradition) and who has been a history of public presentation.

The College of the North Atlantic is thrilled to announce the graduation of ten students from its Textiles: Craft and Apparel Program.
Running With Scissors Come to Running with Scissors - a fashion show and exhibition featuring textile art and apparel pieces created by the graduates. This year's senior students have spent the last year majoring in different studio areas, including apparel construction, knit, quilt and embroidery, and weave. From a wearable knitted house to flying pigs, come out and see how the artists have taken inspiration from a wide variety of themes - the dream world, mental health, modern femininity...
For the first time, the students are planning their own events with an off-site fashion extravaganza and an at-home textiles art exhibition.
The fashion show will be held at Dusk Ultralounge on George Street on Wednesday, May 26th. Doors open at 7:30pm for an 8pm start. Hosted by Krissy Holmes (Out of the Fog) with live entertainment by DJ Physical Patrick. Stay after the show and dance with the designers! Shorelines is an exhibition featuring Anthony Kelly, Slavek Kwi and David Stalling from Ireland, and Angela Antle, Pierre LeBlanc and Anne Troake from Newfoundland and Labrador.
These artists have created artworks in response to visits to the Port au Port Peninsula, NL and the West Coast of Ireland; their moving image, photo-installation and sound works function as metaphors for change.
Shorelines is organized through Sir Wilfred Grenfell College Art Gallery and curated by Charlotte Jones and Sean McCrum.

NEW! 23) Craft Council Member looking for chairs Member, Christina Hilborne, is looking for some of those old wooden stacking chairs, auditorium style, the ones with the square seat which is molded and shaped a bit to be vaguely ergonomic, metal legs and a wooden back which is essentially a strip of curved wood. She wants to dismantle them and use some parts for a couple of new pieces of sculpture.

The Canada Council for the Arts is conducting a consultation with the public in order to gather input on their strategic planning process. A consultation paper has been produced, which can be downloaded online. Those who would like to give feedback are welcome to review the document and complete an online survey. Join storyteller Dale Jarvis as he launches the 13th season of the award winning St. John's Haunted Hike with a special evening of his favourite ghoulish and ghastly tales by candlelight in the haunted Newman Wine Vaults.
Since 1997, the Haunted Hike has thrilled locals and tourists alike with stories of public hangings, duels, and horrific murders, forgotten cemeteries and unmarked graves, vengeful lovers, murdered soldiers, and mysterious fires. He also tells stories of the faerie folk, tales from the collections of the Brothers Grimm, local legends and traditional tales from Newfoundland, Ireland, the United Kingdom and beyond. He is the founder of the St. John's Storytelling Circle, and president of the St. John's Storytelling Festival, Inc.
