Thank you to everybody who came out for the Opening Reception of Salmon Run and SPRING-again! that happened this past Saturday in the Craft Council Gallery.  And a special thanks to those who brought munchies!

It was a beautiful day and there was a great crowd.  The shows will be up until June 13th and hopefully you will get a chance to see them if you haven't already.

I've put some snaps of the opening on Flickr which can also be accessed from our Facebook page and from our homepage.

Meet the Craft Council

Cara's JoyTo help you get to know your Craft Council better, this is a little feature just to introduce staff and members to everybody.

Today, we're featuring another talented Shop Staff member, Stephanie Crowley.  Stephanie has experience in many mediums including painting and the manufacture of silk scarves (she's wearing one in the picture).  View more of her works on her website at www.stephaniecrowley.com.

Stephanie originally started at the Craft Council on a work term through CONA and lucky for us, just stayed on. Three years later, she is an expert Shop staffer and has even participated in the Fine Craft and Design Fair herself.

We're very happy Stephanie has stayed on!

NEW!
1) CALL FOR INTEREST  for inclusion in the Craft Council Gallery presentation to City of St. John's Art Procurement

Deadline: May 31, 2010

Each year the City of St. John's and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador purchase works of fine art and fine craft for their permanent collections.  In the past the Craft Council has installed work from past and current shows in the Gallery for presentation to the City and Provincial Juries.  Now all procurement is done through digital submissions, and both the Gallery and individual artists and craftspeople can make submissions.

Any works currently held by the Gallery could be selected for the Craft Council Gallery's application - the permission of the artist will be obtained.  If you have work in the Gallery which you wish to submit in your personal application, please notify the Gallery.

Current call for interest for inclusion in the Craft Council Gallery presentation to City of St. John's Art Procurement - deadline is May 31.

If you have works still available for purchase that were in past exhibits and you would like the gallery to submit on your behalf, please let us know by MAY 13.  Please note, only a small selection of works will be considered for submission by the Gallery so we cannot guarantee all works will be included.

If you would like the Gallery to consider your work for submission to future Art Procurement deadlines, please send an email to gallery@craftcouncil.nl.ca indicating this interest and we will contact you for further details. 15) Call for Applications: 2011 Saidye Bronfman Awards
Application Deadline: June 1, 2010

The Saidye Bronfman Award is Canada's foremost distinction for excellence in the fine crafts. "Fine Craft" is the term used to define an area of activity in the crafts that is frequently directed towards exhibition and/or sale in a gallery-like setting. This activity involves high levels of technical expertise as well as knowledge of the historical tradition and development of the craft. Through their work, fine crafts practitioners demonstrate new concepts and innovations that expand the boundaries of the medium and its techniques.

In addition, works by the recipient are acquired by the Canadian Museum of Civilization for its permanent collection. Nominees must be professional artists who have created an outstanding body of work, made a substantial contribution to the development of fine crafts in Canada and have been exhibited nationally and internationally. The Canada Council defines a professional artist as someone who has specialized training in the field (not necessarily in academic institutions), who is recognized as such by her or his peers (artists working in the same artistic tradition) and who has been a history of public presentation.

NEW! 21) New Exhibition: A1C Gallery, St. John's (NL)

'Wireframe' by Scott Rogers
Dates: May 8 - June 5, 2010

Wireframe is an installation that uses photo-luminescent tape to trace the unique architectural space of A1C. Inspired by early '80s science-fiction film sets, video games, and AutoCAD, Wireframe creates tension between real and virtual space, converting the gallery into an immersive three-dimensional drawing of itself. Through this 'drawing' process, the individuality of the space is revealed, indexing its production and history as well as positioning the building as a collaborator in the work. This empathetic shift re-mixes the context of the space and the activities happening inside it. As a result Wireframe proposes an inter-subjective relationship; we program the gallery while the gallery simultaneously programs us.

May 7-August 15, 2010
Opening Reception:
Friday, May 14, 2010 at 7:30pm
Artist Talk: Sunday,
May 16, 2010 at 2pm

Oil explores one of the most important subjects of our time by one of the most respected and recognized contemporary photographers in the world. Edward Burtynsky has travelled internationally to chronicle the production, distribution, and use of this critical fuel. In addition to revealing the rarely-seen mechanics of its manufacture, Burtynksy photographs the effects of oil on our lives, depicting landscapes altered by its extraction from the earth and by the cities and suburban sprawl generated around its use. He also addresses the coming "end of oil," as we confront its rising cost and dwindling availability.

Edward Burtynsky: Oil is made possible with the generous support of Scotiabank Group. This exhibition is organized by the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.

Exhibition Dates: May 15-June 5, 2010

Icebergs arrive from a great distance, appear and then quietly disappear. 25) Fantasy, Folklore and Film, Eastern Edge Gallery, St. John's (NL)
Exhibition Dates: May 1st - June 12th

Amalie Atkins (SK) Scenes From a Secret World
Scenes From a Secret World delves into the life/death/life cycle of fairy tales while proposing re-imagined archetypal characters: a wolf that is not evil and a damsel who is not in distress. Set in a fictional world that combines the distinctive atmosphere of chosen locations with a lyrical sound scape, the film and photographs investigate the interconnectedness of humans and nature.

The Shed Collective (NL)  Dark Night of The Ugly Stick
This installation features a scale replica of a typical rural Newfoundland shed, found by many to be reminiscent of 'pop's shed'. This detailed world, filled with hand built tools, unfinished projects, memories, and odds and ends, is the playing space for a short film evoking the pathos of what will be lost when the last generation of pre-confederation Newfoundlanders has died, and younger generations have left these rural communities.
