detail: Salmon by Urve Manuel submitted photo
 | SALMON RUN
Urve Manuel May 8 - June 13, 2010
The
water may be calm on top but a churning world of activity goes on
below. Glass artist Urve Manuel recreates a salmon run from sea to
stream with a curving glass table and a school of life-sized glass
salmon mounted at different heights. Urve uses fused and slumped glass
for the three-dimensional fish as well as leaded glass panels for their
environment. Glass with its ability to reflect light and capture colour
is an ideal medium for Salmon Run.
SPRING-Again! A juried
group show May 8 - 30,
2010
The Craft Council Gallery celebrates spring with
craft that conveys the pleasures of the season!
Robin's song, a
chattering brook, wee bright flower faces - all these things delight our
winter-weary hearts when spring returns. Spring again!, is a juried
exhibition drawn from the Craft Gallery's call for fine craft that is
inspired by spring's rich colors and textures. Buds, blossoms, warm
breezes and all the delights of nature will be expressed in textiles,
clay, wood, paper and a variety of other materials. Take home some
spring so you can have it all year long!

14) Call for Applications: 2011 Saidye Bronfman Awards Application Deadline: June 1, 2010
The Saidye Bronfman Award is Canada's foremost distinction for excellence in the fine crafts. This activity involves high levels of technical expertise as well as knowledge of the historical tradition and development of the craft. Through their work, fine crafts practitioners demonstrate new concepts and innovations that expand the boundaries of the medium and its techniques.

NEW! 22) Fantasy, Folklore and Film, Eastern Edge Gallery, St. John's (NL) Exhibition Dates: May 1st - June 12th
Amalie Atkins (SK) Scenes From a Secret World Scenes From a Secret World delves into the life/death/life cycle of fairy tales while proposing re-imagined archetypal characters: a wolf that is not evil and a damsel who is not in distress. Set in a fictional world that combines the distinctive atmosphere of chosen locations with a lyrical sound scape, the film and photographs investigate the interconnectedness of humans and nature.
Amalie Atkins work is inspired by the repetitive tasks related to her textiles work, such as cutting and stitching, during which subconscious ideas emerge into stories and eventually story lines. Having studied at the Alberta College of Art and Design, Atkins currently lives and works in Saskatoon. Her work has been exhibited across Canada and in 2009 debuted in Berlin, Germany.
The Shed Collective (NL) Dark Night of The Ugly Stick This installation features a scale replica of a typical rural Newfoundland shed, found by many to be reminiscent of 'pop's shed'. This detailed world, filled with hand built tools, unfinished projects, memories, and odds and ends, is the playing space for a short film evoking the pathos of what will be lost when the last generation of pre-confederation Newfoundlanders has died, and younger generations have left these rural communities.
The Shed collective includes: visual artists: Scott Keating, Peter Drysdale and Monique Maynard artist and puppeteer: Darka Erdelji writers/filmmakers: David Keating and Jonathan Watton with support from Blanche and Kevin Keating, John Puddicombe, Gina Rae Hoyles, April Norman, and Derrick Holmes.

24) Announcing Culture Days - Celebrating Arts + Culture from Coast to Coast Dates: September 24-26, 2010
Culture is not something we sit and watch. We own it, we value it, we live, eat and breathe it. Join the Movement
Culture Days is a collaborative pan-Canadian volunteer movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of all Canadians in the arts and cultural life of our communities.
Engage in and with the arts, cultural and heritage activities and experiences in your community. Everyone has a role to play - cultural organizations, citizens, businesses, artists, tradition bearers, and community groups. What's Happening?
Canadian provinces are lining up their efforts to be part of Culture Days inaugural events September 24-26, 2010. Culture Days events across Canada will feature hands-on, interactive activities that invite you to participate behind the scenes, to discover the world of artists, creators, historians, architects, curators, and designers... in your own community.
All together now! It's a time to showcase and experience our arts, culture and heritage all across Newfoundland and Labrador.
Open your doors, offer an event, or activate your community. Plan an outreach or public engagement activity. It could be part of something you already have planned (e.g. a meet the director night as part of your regular season show, or an open artists studio so the community can see you at work) or something new that you or your cultural organization can undertake. Want to Know More?
Culture Days is coming to Newfoundland and Labrador, and more details are coming soon. Meantime, visit the Culture Days Website www.culturedays.ca and find out more ways you can become involved. Register your event on the Culture Days website. Newfoundland and Labrador has its own page on the site - and we want to fill that page with what's happening here!
