Greetings!
There will be no Member News for the next two Wednesdays, so please not that this one is a bit long but I wanted to include everybody's information.
Again, a quick reminder about our FACEBOOKpage. We have closed down both groups now and only update the Craft Council Page. You may not be aware you will no longer receive messages in your inbox, but you will get "updates" instead. These can be accessed when you look at your messages in FACEBOOK under the "Updates" link in the menu on the left. This is how any page you are a FAN of will reach you, so make sure to check your "Updates" regularly. You might not know what you've been missing!
Oh yes, and we now have a Flickr page that we will be post pictures on from events that happen around the Craft Council. So check it out at http://www.flickr.com/photos/craftcouncilnl. You'll find pics from the Opening Reception of Teacups & Mink and Pots & Potpourri. You can access these images anytime from the Craft Council homepage.
Did you miss something from last weeks Member News? If there is any information you want to look up from past weeks, visit the Member News archives on the website.

NEW! 26) 2010 Provincial Wholesale Show (Buyers Marketplace) & Professional Development Seminars This event took place in St. John's at the Holiday Inn from March 27-29 and was quite successful this year. There were 26 exhibitors at the show and we saw buyers from nearly 60 craft and gift shops from around the province. Orders written at the show totaled over $114,000 this year making it a very successful event for participating producers. A number of exhibitors indicated they anticipate additional follow-up orders from buyers as well. Buyers were clearly there to buy, and this may indicate a high level of confidence in the upcoming summer sales season.
Four workshops were held on Saturday, March 27. All were well attended and participants were very positive about the information they got from the workshops.
We are hoping to bring some of these workshops to other locations in the province this year as well.
NEW! 27) Pete Barrett Retiring (but only from government) Long time Craft Development Consultant Pete Barrett will be retiring at the end of April, after 23 years with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. Many of you know Pete and have worked with her over the years. She has travelled the length and breadth of the island helping the craftspeople of the province, spending many hours working with single individuals and groups alike. Her passion for her job was evident and we'll certainly miss her. But she is on to new adventures including spending more time on her own craft work, doing more teaching, and working on a few more projects we'll no doubt hear about in the future. All the best Pete!
NEW! 28) ACI TURNS CRITICAL EYE ON PROVINCIAL BUDGET'S LACK OF NEW INVESTMENTS IN CULTURE
The Association of Culture Industries of Newfoundland and Labrador (ACI) attended the reading of the 2010/11 provincial budget on March 29 in St. John's and wishes to express deep concern that continued development of the culture sector has once again been completely neglected.
"Culture was not even mentioned in the budget," said ACI Executive Director George Murray. "I don't know how anyone can purport to frame a budget around the 'needs of children' in Newfoundland and Labrador and completely leave out culture. It's inconceivable."
"Our unique culture is an infinitely renewable resource that will be here long after the oil is gone," says Murray. "It is a sector worth over $400 million annually to our province alone, and comprises upwards of 7% of the national GDP. But it has
infrastructure and development needs just like every other sector. If you want to increase the economic capacity of a sector, you need to give it reliable and steady assistance to aid planning and development."
The 2006 blueprint document, Creative Newfoundland and Labrador--a three-year blueprint plan for investment in, and development of, the sector--did just that: it created a reliable constellation of policies and investment opportunities to help nurture our world-class, highly professionalized arts and culture sector. The Williams government was widely lauded for this document, both here at home and nationally. But that plan's commitment ended in 2008/09 and no significant new funding has been announced in the two budgets since.
After last year's budget, brought down during the height of the global economic downturn, ACI congratulated the government on not cutting culture funding in a time of fiscal uncertainty. But, at the time, it was strongly noted that as the economy
recovered, ACI expected the government would renew its commitment to the arts and culture sector by developing a new three- or five-year plan to drive us forward. Unfortunately, this has not happened and the sector remains at investment rates from 2008.
During the pre-budget consultations across the province this winter, ACI presented submissions outlining the need for renewed investment in the arts and culture sector, starting with a significant increase in the budget for the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council (NLAC). The NLAC is the third-lowest funded arts council in Canada (above only PEI and New Brunswick), at $4 per capita, and yet we lean heavily on our artists (musicians, craftspeople, performers, writers, visual artists, filmmakers, etc.) to create and drive the culture that attracts so many visitors and dollars to our province. Despite an increase in solid applications to NLAC programs (indicative of a growing sector) the NLAC received no new funding at all this year. This has led to a sector that has become a victim of its own success, having continued growing beyond its investment.
"This province is recognized around the world as one with distinct and vibrant culture. That did not happen accidentally, or without investment. This government depends on the contributions that our arts community makes and they must not overlook it or discount it," says ACI Chair Amy House. "The investments of Creative Newfoundland and Labrador were significant and initiated incredible growth. But without a new plan committing significant new investment to take the sector forward, we risk losing many of the economic and cultural gains made during its time."
The global economic setbacks of last year affected every sector and every province, yet our own government has noted Newfoundland and Labrador weathered the crisis relatively well. At a time when the entire world is striving to stimulate various sectors back to life, it seems counter-intuitive to timidly freeze funding in a sector that was experiencing such lush economic growth.
In consultation with its member organizations (representing over 2000 cultural producers, organizations and businesses province-wide), ACI thinks it is past time for a new commitment on the part of a government that seeks to use our distinct and vibrant culture as a selling point for its tourism, recruitment and retention strategies. Therefore, in the coming weeks, ACI will contact the offices of the Premier, the Minister of Finance, and the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation to request face-to-face meetings at which the concerns of the sector can be heard, discussed, and acted upon.
For more information or comment, please contact ACI Executive Director George Murray at 709-738-4333.
29) Legal Needs Questionnaire for visual and media artists Please complete the survey by May 1st, 2010at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/62NV6YY
CARFAC is conducting a survey to examine the legal needs of Canadian visual and media artists. Your responses will help us design services that best meet artists' needs and interests. We encourage you to complete the survey.
Every artist who fills out the survey will be entered into a draw for a copy of "Artists' Contracts: Agreement for Visual and Media Artists" published by CARFAC Ontario. Your answers will be treated confidentially. Individual data and comments will not be shared with any other individuals or organizations and will not be released publicly.
In addition to this survey, CARFAC will host a panel discussion on artists' legal issues at our national conference in Banff (May 13-15). Using the anonymous data from the survey and information shared by artists and arts lawyers at our conference, we will prepare a report, to be published in our upcoming newsletter, Calendar, with recommendations that CARFAC will pursue as a result of the survey findings. If you would like more information about this survey or the legal clinic, please contact us at communications@carfac.ca.
