Readers Digest Version of Bike Rules

1. Always keep right!   OAT has condensed the draft zone to 5M in Ontario and in extremely crowded races the referee may elect not to penalize people who are drafting unless they are clearly trying to gain an advantage.
2. When passed you must not accelerate!  Allow the pass, then return the favour and pass them if you can.
3. Communicate!  When you wish to pass let the person ahead of you know by shouting "on your Left".
4. Listen! Pay attention to the other cyclists.  If some tells you they're "on your left" move right as quickly as possible and let them pass safely.
5. Blocking is dangerous. Riding side by side with friends blocks the road for faster cyclists and cars!  You could be killed by a car.  At the very least you could be penalized.
6. Self Police.  If someone is blocking your path and will not move to allow you to pass, make a mental note of their number and file a protest at the end of the race.  A good idea is to speak with others around them and ask them to do the same.  It's rare that only one person is held up.
7. Never cross the centre of the road!  Lines are not always painted on the road.  This also applies when cornering - cut the corner and you will be DQ'd.
8. Always assume the road is open to cars!  You must share the road!At any time a car may enter the course from driveways etc. Always be mindful.

9-Know the Course. It is your responsibilty to know the course. Please look over the maps posted in this newsletter.

Get Outside with Merrell!

Here we are at event number 3, and it's the perfect event for outsiders. There are triathlons, duathlons and relays along quiet country roads. Whichever race (or races) you pick, you never even have to leave the park! What a fantastic opportunity for a workout and enjoyment of nature at the same time.

Speaking of enjoying nature, we're hearing a lot from the increasing number of Merrell Barefoot shoe enthusiasts. Everyone's extolling the virtues of the 0-millimetre drop and being able to feel the ground underneath one's feet.

Of course, the change in stride and the more erect posture also help strengthen your core, allowing the body to tune itself up, the way it's engineered to do.

If you're ready to give it a try, please click here for useful tips to get you on the right road: the one that leads to fun... and harmony.

Accommodations

 delta

On-line bookings can be made here.  The Delta offers a 10% discount to athletes who book via this link, and the rate is good for any weekend, not just races! Delta Guelph allows athlete's tri-bikes in Guest Rooms!

Parking - Free on site parking. Follow parking signs.

Saturday June 16th Start Times:
  • Chariot Try-A-Tri - 10:00 am
  • Sprint Triathlon - 1:00 pm
  • Sprint Duathlon - 1:10 pm
  • Awards - after last finisher crosses the line
  • Post-Race Party - after each event

Sprint Athletes- if you can't be in the park before 10 am on Saturday then time your arrival for after 11:30. This is in your best interest as you will not be allowed into the park until after the try-a-tri is over.  This is because the try- a- tri athletes will be using the entrance into the park as part of the bike route and you will interfere with their progress. They also won't appreciate inhaling idling car gas fumes. Thank you so much for your co-operation with this!

Sprint Athletes Transition:

If you happen to be in the park during the try-a-tri then please DO NOT rack your bike in transition until AFTER the try-a-tri is over. For your convenience we will set up a bike rack outside of transition (unsupervised) where you may leave your bike if need be.

Sunday June 17th Start Times

  • Olympic Triathlon - 8:50am
  • Olympic Duathlon - 9:10am
  • Course Closed - 12:50pm
  • Awards - 1pm
  • Post-Race Party - 11-1pm

Olympic Athletes- for anyone doing the Olympic at Guelph 1 - be aware that Sd Rd 20 (the one that links Jones Baseline and Cnty Rd 29) is in rough shape. The intersection at Jones and 20 has a bad set of pot holes in the west bound lanes - pick your ride line well. Suggestion is for you to drive or ride that part of the course to see it before you race.

If you are not familiar with the rules of a duathlon  and triathlon as they pertain to drafting, etc., please visit our Rules and Regulations page.

Please know the course before you head out! See course map link above.

Points of Interest     Please be aware that the park road leading in and out of the transition area has large speedbumps!  Please slow as you approach them. Also, people sometimes forget when they are returning to the transition.  Keep Alert.

Please remember that roads are not closed to vehicular traffic. Police are available throughout the courses to help with traffic flow.
Please stay right to allow others to pass you. Don't cut corners on the bike or run courses.

For the Sprint Triathlon and Duathlon on Saturday all markers will be in BLACK.
Runners in ALL races must run on the LEFT side of the road until the final kilometer where you will then switch to the RIGHT.  This eliminates any run cross overs on the course and keeps everybody safe.
Each km of the run will be marked with a sign on the road
Each 5km will be marked on the bike course

Always be courteous of fellow athletes and encouraging to those new to the sport
Please listen and respect the OAT officials on the course.  They are there for your safety and enjoyment of the race.
Pay Attention: MP3 players etc are not allowed while racing and are subject to disqualification.
Smile as you cross the finish line.  As always, Finisher Pix Photographers will be there to take your picture.  Pictures can be viewed after the event  on- line.

Aid stations for the Olympic events
These will have water and Gatorade.  The 10km run has 3 aid stations which you will pass by 2, 2 times and 1, 1 time each , also with water and gatorade. That's approximately 1 every 1.5 km.
Aid stations for Sprint Triathlon and Duathlon
5km run has 2 aid stations in which you will pass 2 times each to get gatorade and water.

All: Please remember that if the day looks like it is going to be really hot and humid to plan accordingly.  Come well hydrated and rested.  Pack extra drinks for you and your family.  A snack bar that is run by the park is there for drinks and food for spectators.  Each athlete will receive a bottle of water at the finish line.  Please only take one!  We need to enforce this to ensure that those finishing later on in the day also get one.

Please keep litter to a minimum by dropping your cup close to the station.
