| Training Tips From Lisa Bentley! | |
Welcome to the 2012 off season. While most of us are used to taking our training indoors in the winter, this year, many of you have been spotted cycling outdoors and enjoying the spring like temperatures. Regardless of the temperatures, this is typically a "non-racing" time of year where athletes lay down the base and foundation for their upcoming races whether that is your first ever triathlon or a Hawaii Ironman qualification race. It is a good time to work on your weaknesses and maybe add an extra session of that "weakness" each week. For example, if cycling is your weak link and you are currently riding twice per week, then add in a 3rd short session. Shake up your training by doing something different. If you always ride long and aerobic, add in a shorter session with some 30 second and 1 minute "sprints" at higher efforts/wattages and develop some power. If hill climbing is your weakness, add in some big gear, low cadence work where you push/grind too big of a gear in an effort to do some cycling specific "weight lifting". If you tend to grind too much in races, then add some high cadence efforts where you lower the resistance/wattage and spin at 105+ rpm; this will create a neuromuscular pattern over time so that you will default to 90 rpm on race day. Whatever focus you decide to take, do not bury yourself under too many workouts in the off season. The key to endurance sport is consistency over time. So if your current attempt at double workouts every day while balancing a full-time career and family is leaving you falling asleep in your dinner, then cut back to one session per day during the week and then a double on either Saturday or Sunday when you have a bit more time (don't forget to take a day off each week - sometimes 2 days off on recovery weeks). There is no point in doing 14 workouts per week in February if you are exhausted and "over-done" in May. Triathlon is a lifestyle sport. We want to see you at the races for the next 20 years not just in 2012 and so make swim, bike and run part of your daily life and enjoy the health benefits that are sure to follow.
